I'm reasonably sure that's a Guantanamo-class escort carrier, NUNS standard capital ship for their Macross fleets. These are not some flimsy 3rd-party transport boats but genuine military hardware - albeit hardware that's getting long in the engine trail by Delta's time. Guantanamos were around since 7.

That said, the scene does actually make sense, since we only ever see the Draken start its attack; it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to expect it to fire that gunpod as well. Knowing General Galaxy, that gunpod is probably the same type of multi-mode heavy-beam-capable gunpod as the Lucifer's, of which gutting ships in one hit would be well within capability. Pitting the Draken III against the Guantanamo is like attacking a WWII escort carrier with an F/A-18E/F.

They were confirmed to be shell firing a while back. I assume they have the hip beamguns the others do as well. But the only reason they even have the handguns is so that the weapon container can hold the beam gunpod.
