Where did the R-Type thread go?
Also discuss awesome mechs/ships and the shmups they're from.
Hyper Duel's player ships transformed and were rad as shit, either agile with a small hitbox or larger with much heavier firepower. The game also features several designs blatantly ripped off from Gundam 0083, colony drops with levels that take place in the immediate aftermath, and amazing music because it's Technosoft and they can do no wrong in that department. If there's an /m/ game list and this isn't on it then that's a mistake.
this shading is awful. It completely mutilates any sense of shape or form of the object it placed upon. It just becomes more of a mess when one attempts to animate it. The movement of the shadows as the object moves never flows naturally across frames as the placement barely makes any sense on just one in the first place
Laser based Itano circuses.
Gawd I wish Koto would restock this soon, I want to build it now. =<
whoa whoa, what's this?
technosoft mech designs are super cool. Well, not in TFV, where everything looks so... plain (probably because of the rudimentary 3D as opposed to the detailed sprites they were known for).
The XLAY is mah waifu 4 laifu
I thought V's designs looked rad, there's not a lot of time to appreciate them though because Free-Range overweapon just slays a lot of them before they really even get to do much to you. It also has the rad as fuck boss fight where
you fight the replica of the Rynex from IV which mounts several different Dendrobium/METEOR-style super packs one after the other consecutively which you can fight with your own super pack that you mounted at the beginning of the stage to crash through a battleship armada, which could be destroyed and force you to dismount back to regular ship mode any time between the beginning of the stage and the end of the boss.
Free Range makes a lot of the game a fleeting moment... Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, A3 all get about a minute combined of screentime before Over Weapon dismantles them completely. TFV unfortunately shoved all of its difficulty into its last boss against the Guardian, whose erratic movements can catch you off-guard and kill you (and if you lose Free Range here you lose the game).
Also Gauntlet is not a bad design, but it just didn't have the same look as ol' Rynex. Again, I blame the bad polygons making things look worse than they had to.
Looks like the Japanese R-Type otaku are rallying behind otaking.
aw, that's a sweet looking dobby. He gets the coolest designs in all the games he's in
>mecha form in R-Type 2
>zombie form in R-Type Delta
Never played Final or 3; don't know if he's there.
You know, far be it from me to criticize a classic design, but am i the only one who's leery of spaceships with such hugely-exposed cockpits (pic related)? It looks like a disaster waiting to happen. The Vic Viper >>13843692
in contrast plays it safe and smart by minimizing the chance that a chunk of debris can kill your pilot.
I know i shouldn't argue aspects of realism in video-games, but it seems... obvious.
hypocritically, I do quite like the Gauntlet design, if for at least how chunky it is (even if in-game it looks like it has down's syndrome). It at least doesn't shove the cockpit into exposed space as much as some other designs.
In some ways it's kind of nice that IREM doesn't (or barely) exist anymore so it's not like they can stop the progress of this fan animation. I wonder what type of 3D animation program he is using to do his rotoscopes.
Not soon enough, my friends. It just can't come soon enough.
Let's not go overboard now...!
Anyway, I've managed to get the cockpit from pic related into it.
Isn't that force power-up supposed to be a lens that attaches to the Force pod? As in so it modulates the laser that comes out when you feed a shot into the pod from the other end?
Unless your going for the whole Lost Stafighter type story hook, he should be wearing a pilot suit like this.
Posting some of my favorite shmup (/m/-related?) art from Syvalion. Not the best game in the world, but pretty groovy.
Yuck, all the cutscenes from R-Type Complete CD are so poorly-drawn. The port really suffered in audio and visuals (silly ill-fitting soundtrack).
It's very nice to see this coming together! I like the small detail of the charge-shot indicator on the ship panel.
I know this image of R-Type is often posted during a topic of the game, but it's too good to not share.
I'll dump a few /m/-related images of ships/shmup mecha
wish this was in higher-res
Varth is a great game though.
this thread did inspire me to fire up R-Type in mame again. Still too hard for me lol. Is Final any good? I've watched videos but it seems like there are lots of points in stages where nothing happens for 20-30 seconds.
