It's very simple. Fans love being the center of attention. Especially when it comes to anime series nobody has seen and they're the word of authority on the quality of it. The rest of the fandom has to believe them. So when things become widely available, and people start seeing how Zeta (insert any other gundam series) is not some kind of end-all of anime and express their opinions on the matter the old time guard can't take it. Their authority is being challenged and nobody likes it. So flame wars and shitposting erupt all over the place. It's a fight for dominance.

Zeta does have problems. Real problems as in retreading twice the same storyline for no reason at all. Four and Rosamia. That's like 10 episodes at the minimum of pure filler. Another problem is how antagonists just show up like fucking magic. Paptimus ? Care to explain to me how all of sudden a single man (who lives in the outer solar system) holds in his hands the balance between the earth federation and Zeon ? No. We never hear from Jupiter in 0079, CCA, ZZ (except Judau basicaly goodbye to all and exiling himself in the outer solar system), Victory, Turn A Gundam, 0083, Ms 8th Team, Unicorn, 0080 War in the pocket. And somehow in Zeta they're the linchpin of the conflict between the Earth Federation and Zeon/Zeon Remenants ?

Reccoa was a spy. Not an assassin. She went in to get some info on the Jupitris and GTFO. Nowhere was it ever stated she was sent in to kill Scirocco.

This right here? This is part of WHY these arguments get so bad. Yes, there's legitimate criticisms to be had for Zeta, just as there are for most things. But in many cases here, said criticisms are built on either gross oversimplification, misreading of scenes, or just flat-out misinformation.

Case in point - for as vague as some areas of the politics are, the show does make distinctions that the AEUG aren't Zeon. In fact, several of them openly bristle at the idea of being on the same team as Zeon and regularly describe the Titans as "as bad as Zeon."

This isn't even buried information, either. That latter point is laid out pretty clearly in the first few episodes. Particularly around 3-10, when the comparing of the Titans to Zeon is more overt.

Again, there's legitimate issues, but it doesn't help your case when you can't even get your facts straight in discussing them.

Not really. Zeta introduced a lot of new thematic ideas. Comparatively Victory was just a retread. That's not to say that Zeta didn't borrow from the original series, because it did. But aside from some of the technological designs Victory felt somewhat by-the-numbers and uninteresting to me. I don't dislike it, though. I think it's pretty solid.
