Does /m/ like Space Cobra? I never see it talked about here. I saw the original series a couple years ago and fucking loved it. I wasn't a fan of the movie which I know came first though. Anyways, the music, visuals and character designs were all ace. The story wasn't that bad either. Crystal Boy, or Bowie, whatever the correct name is, was pretty intimidating.
We do have once every couple months but yeah, I fucking LOVE Space Adventure Cobra. I really need to look into the manga one of these days.
Just started watching it myself, OP. CURISTARU BOI is my favourite villain in just about anything ever.
Also, I'm watching the Bluray release, and I gotta tell you I get the chills whenever they out up one of those amazing (I don't know what to call them?) freeze frames. The artwork is just superb. Maybe I'm simply a pleb when it comes to animation, but damn everything just looks gorgeous.
>>13825539
Cobra really does look great for its age. Better than some recent shows, even.
>CURISTARU BOI is my favourite villain in just about anything ever.
Mine, too. He's like a fabulous Terminator.
Back when women had noses and looked like humans.
Can't tell if this show loves or hates women. They're gorgeous, and they spend a lot of time focusing on them. But the show loves to absolutely massacre them at the same time.
>>13825596
A time when women were women and men were men. No fucking moeshit. No pussified male characters. No tsundere female characters. A more civilised time for anime.
did anybody read this?

Fuckin love Cobra my man.
Yes, the recent OVAs were basically James Bond Space Operas. It's hard to dislike that.
>>13825272
Good thing that Hokuto no Gun are doing it, especially since SystematicChaos decided to take the place of the translator that they assigned, but turned out to be irresponsible.
>>13825084
It's very stupid, especially the OVA where they have this girl's body unlock some randomly powerful thing. Also Cobra himself having plot armor of legends.
Watched the movie yesterday, I liked it a lot but I'm wondering if the tv series is a lot different.
>>13825084
Saw the movie and the first seven or so episodes of the 80s TV series. Was kinda surprised the manga wasn't fully scanlated.
The 80s TV series is the stuff of legend. Quite possibly the only flawless anime ever made.
>>13827312
They're very different. Watch the TV series.
>>13825084
I can't speak for all of /m/, but I love Cobra
Personally, I love Cobra
/m/ really doesn't have thread substantial to it's calibre
From the original TV series to even the newer OVAs, all Cobra is good Cobra
>>13827312
TV is a little more lighthearted.
Say what you want about the new CGI (I'm looking a you, Crystau Bowie) but the music was pretty damn good

>>13828034
I've seen the OVAs get some flak before, mainly due to budget issues. But personally I love them, especially the Psycho Gun which was directed by Cobra's mangaka Buichi Terasawa.
>>13828052

It's a lot like French sci-fi comics (the various works of Moebius, Valerian & Laureline, etc.), so that's not terribly surprising.
>>13828071
That's to be expected with a country with a lot of weebs

Damn, you summed up everything I like about him perfectly. That and that glass plinking noise he makes whenever he walks. Are there any decent action figures or models of him anywhere, incidentally?
I'm only 12 episodes in but damn this show gets better and better! I haven't been this enraptured with a space opera since I watched Star Wars for the first time as a kid. Are there any other shows that have the same sort of space opera adventure vibe as this?
>>13829025
>Are there any decent action figures or models of him anywhere, incidentally?
The figma release in >>13825592's pic is the most modern release. Given how much more advanced figure tech has gotten past the mid 2000s, it's probably safe to say it is the best pose-able figure. Only negative thing I'd say about it is the bones in his legs and arms are literally just gold sticks instead of proper shaped bones.
Probably your only choice anyway, but I'm very happy with mine and my Cobra figma which is absolutely awesome. If only I could get my hands on Lady. She's really fucking expensive second-hand for some reason while Crystal Bowie and Cobra aren't so much so.

It's a sort of dated, very 60's disposable women mindset. Women are pretty, but they can die all the time. And it doesn't hugely matter.
>>13828071
>it turns into a sports anime for like 10 episodes
>>13825592
Strictly speaking what the hell is he? Robot or cyborg?
For 82 the animation is great.
Are there any other shows before 85 that have similar quality? I can only think of Giant Gorg that can compare.
>>13830365
That's not a valid observation, because in this series everyone but Cobra and Lady is disposable. In fact, Cobra's damsel of the week is usually one of the few secondary characters to survive a Cobra adventure. When Cobra takes along a male secondary character, they usually end up dying while Cobra survives due to superior luck and skill.
And in Cobra, the women are usually kickass in some way. They tend to be highly accomplished scholars, noble warriors, rulers or have some sort of mystical power. Who just happen to be stunningly beautiful and have a lovingly drawn posterior by Buichi "the ass man" Tersawa. Anyway, these strong women have flings with Cobra but are otherwise independent of men. They sleep with Cobra because they see him as an equal.
This is the secret success of sexually charged 60s/70s romantic adventure. This styling common in both James Bond, Barbarella and yes, Cobra, appeals to both men and women alike.
>>13830394
>James Bond
Don't the women who sleep with him either do it because they're stuck with him or because it's part of their espionage-related job?
And Barbarella bedded almost everything.
Was anybody else said when Doug died? He was actually a really sympathetic character.

>>13832301
The series is much better than the movie. It's been a long time since I've seen the Retsupurae, but I think the Sega CD game added dumb shit not in the TV series.
The movie is a piece of shit. I hope the the TV series is better. OAV is mediocre at best.
>>13832333
The series is really good
has anything beyond vol 4 been translated?
>>13831505
Same. Also annoyed that Doug, Pumkin and Bud were introduced and killed off so quickly.
Cobra's hand is kinda stupid.
It's a prostetic that he takes off. So he looks like a goofball carrying around an extra hand.
The solution is so simple. His hand should split open, then shift back, revealing the gun.

That would weaken the integrity of the arm and might cause a problem with sleeves.
>>13833111
>>13834455
The forearm coming off is pure style. Dezaki tried to change the arm to gun transformation in the movie, but it ultimately fell flat because it's not as cool. Plus, you can't rocket punch without the forearm coming off. I think ultimately it's just more visually significant to see Cobra take off his arm rather than it transforming or him just shooting beams out of his hands.

>>13884503
You say that like its a bad thing
>>13936769
>I get the impression that he's kind of a dork pretending to be cool.
He's the ultimate cool acting like a dork. Cobra has a whimsical and playful persona that throws people off when they realize what he's really capable of/who he really is.
>>13936769
>>13936812
Before his self inflicted mindwipe he seemed to have been much more serious. But the only thing that got him was a state of mind that lead to him effectively committing suicide. Even after he got his memory back he never really seemed to get old Cobra's attitude.
I think you can make a good argument that old Cobra pretty much died and what you had left was a new man with Cobra's memory.
>>13936980
OG Cobra was a wise cracking guy, too.
>>13936769

My only qualms with the new series are the fact that there's no Nozawa and the direction is a bit different from Dezaki, and it's not like anyone can remedy those, but it's still much better than nothing, that's for sure.
Here, have a lewd Cobra as an apology.
>>13929295
Why not start with the movie? I'm looking for something good to watch in one sitting and it seems perfect.
>>13956966
Movie's an adaptation of a story arc from the manga and TV series written by Teresawa himself. It's also a bit of downer, the TV series will give you a better grounding in the character and the slightly lighter tone it usually goes for.
>>13956966
The movie is not that great apart from the visuals. Not really a decent gateway into Cobra since it's pretty different stylistically.
>>13957058
>>13957138
The OVA's and the new series follow the Movie cannon?
>>13957149
No. The OVAs are just animated versions of specific parts of the manga series. The movie is a highly altered version of an early manga arc, the TV series is a loose adaptation of the manga.
>>13830367
Looks like the new show will be about the sports stuff too.

The series draws one very pretty woman. But it's the same pretty woman every single time with only minor variations. Same body type, same face. For this reason, it can be a little confusing when women show up who look the same but aren't the same person.
