We've tried. Dozens of us have tried, in dozens of different ways.

We've made Lacus an evil dictator, we've made her emotionally vulnerable, we've removed her from the show entirely. We've made Kira stay a berserker, we've made him less fucked up, we've made him more fucked up. We've made him side with ZAFT, we've made him stay with the EA. We've changed the Freedom's wings, we've changed the Freedom's guns, we've had him switch from the Freedom to the Strike, we've had him never pilot the Freedom at all. We've expanded on the Extended, we've eliminated the Extended. We've made Shinn the star, we've made Athrun the star, we've ditched the whole cast and made Lowe or Sven be the star. We've changed Durandal's motives, we've changed Logos's motives, we've said Rau was right and wiped out everything. We've had Kira and Shinn team up, we've had Kira get called out by half the cast of an SRW, we've had Kira be a bro from the beginning and hang out with Heero Yuy. Meer has replaced Lacus, Meer has become her own singer. Every permutation of this story has been explored.

None of it fixes it. Nothing makes it never was. Destiny is something we all have to deal with, because nothing we ever do will make it better.

I still liked it but here are some starters:
-Make Kira not fuck off after the events of SEED and actually do something about the conflict in the world
-Make Shinn actually change over time instead of deciding you want to change him and then doing a 180
-Make Shinn's decision actually mean something instead of setting him up as a pre-final boss
-I think the original trio from SEED were charming in their own way so I would like if they did that too
-Give the grunt suits more screen-time and give the protagonists more of a challenge(it was generally decent near the start)
-Make the Strike Freedom look more like the Okawara MG

Okey, Let's play this game again.

One of the major flaws of Destiny was to not continue to deepen the setting, which was one of the elements that saved Seed. Logos, Terminal, Junk Guild, all things very interesting on paper.

The whole issue of sterility of the coordinators is totally forgotten, and this was a mistake, because it could be the central theme of a new war without introducing crazy villans who want only death and destruction . Federation try everything to isolate Zaft and the Cordinators realize that without the Earth, they will not survive for long. The independence is not so advantageous.

But the main point of a good story is to introduce a real threat, something that keeps the tensions high, something that Destiny is totally lacked.

It's a cliché a but , I would even have liked a reversal of perspective. Shin start ally with ZAFT, but then ends up a prisoner in the Atlantic Federation, and become friend with some of them, realizing how much effort do the naturals to keep up with Super men like him. He do not become a pacifist and still hate the Earth Federation, but he begins to question the nature of the Coordinators and understand the reasons of his enemies. An excuse to introduce new lore side quests and perhaps reveal that all that was known about Cordinators was false (Twist). Since Tanaka adored interpret Meer, the idea of replacing her could be exploited in some strongest terms. Instead of making Lacus an evil dictator, Meer could be a clone determined to become what Lacus, (according to her) had not the courage to be. Eventually the image of Lacus become so compromised, that she's literally hunted for crimes she did not commit, forcing Kira to return to fight just to protect her from harm, without having any intention of join the war like he did the true show.

In short, in Destiny happen very few relevant things and it's a fucking 50 episodes show,

-Kira died at the end of SEED and Destiny's main character conflict will be Athrun-Shinn.

-Mu's death is respected and he doesn't come back as the atrocity that was Neo, get a new Char.

-Djbril less of a saturday morning cartoon villain and have him and Durandal be equal as the chessmasters behind everything

-Lacus a shit, make her suffer I dunno

Ironically, I think that the solution of all problems would be to replace the role of Athurn with Kira. Athrun remains to Orb because he's considered a traitor and Cagalli is escorted by Kira and his Strike Gundam. Fukuda could masturbate on his Self insert, now mentor, and Shin is save to remaon a protagonist.

Actually, I think it was planned from the beginning that Shin join the Archangel like Kamille dd with the Karaba, but something must have gone wrong.

Cagalli is stuck between doing what's right for everyone, and doing what's best for Orb. She, not Lunamaria become's Shinn's love interest.

Athrun will be confused and tries to first help out ZAFT, but will then succumb to continuing what his father started

Lunamaria now Older than Shinn and Rey, becomes the Haman to Athrun's Char

Durandal is actually a sympathetic character in this version, as he is now Terminal's co-founder with Malchio. He was the one who taught Lacus her idiologies, He is honestly trying to avoid what eventually will doom the coordinators.

Not much changes for the EA, but one of them is including a puppetmaster who instigates the conflicts, one who has a deep hatred for Coordinators, not founded on how better they are, but founded on what they did on the last war.

If Durandal hadn't tried to assassinate Lacus, or had used any method other than sending top-of-the-line ZAFT mobile suits that would obviously implicate him, he would have won handily. If he had waited to enact the Destiny Plan, or enacted it as a slow series of measures across a few decades, he would have won. If he had built the Minerva to be waterproof, he would have won.

I think the big issue is if we're going to fix it, we basically have to go back to the beginning of the series.

And that brings up the question of, are we going to actually invent new characters to take this in a new direction, or just patch up issues with the series.
If we're going to do the former, then the old characters HAVE to take a lessened role in this. As the series stands, you could take out most of the new characters and have the series have the same goddamn ending.

Eventually they disappear and nobody knows what happened to them. You do not have to explain these kind of things. The discovery of a new status quo and understand how they arrived at a new critical situation is a narrative ploy historically successful because it allows the protagonists and the audience to discover things together. Among other things, you are not obliged to set the story three years after Seed Destiny, it would be better to pass at least twenty years so that there is a new political scenario.

I think the problem lies at the heart of the Cosmic Era, Fukuda. He's too passionate about SEED, to involved that he is either unwilling or unable to be objective about the setting and the characters. Orb is supposedly his idealized version of Japan, and many people believe Kira and Lacus are stand-ins for him and his wife. The Cosmic Era isn't supposed to be deep or thoughtful, it's supposed to be entertaining and like 70's super robot shows. And after all these years, he still defends his work on the show.

Basically, you'd need to remove him and then begin to view the characters objectively in order to begin fixing Destiny.

Flay was pregnant at the end of Seed
Kira finds out from Miriallia when he first returns in the Freedom at Alaska.
Thus when Flay dies Kira loses his child and the girl he still had feelings for
Throughout the Orb arc in Seed he'd be incredibly antsy and worried about Flay
When he finds out she is alive in the capsule his mad dash towards it ignoring the Druggies trying to kill him makes more sense this way. Finding out she and his child are alive makes saving her the most important thing to him at that moment.
She dies anyway at the end

Destiny
Shinn knows the Freedom killed his family. His anger is aimed at it and the leaders of Orb.
Kira has PTSD and can't be intimate with Lacus because of what happened with Flay
Athrun loves Cagalli but wants to help turn ZAFT into the organization he feels it should be. He wants to get away from his father's image and ideal of ZAFT.
Cagalli isn't a pussy. She went to PLANT to demand Durandal stop using Orb resources for MS construction
She pilots during Break The World
She and Shinn develop a love/hate relationship with each other. He comes to respect her as she is willing to put her life on the line for her ideals and she comes to understand his pain about feeling powerless. She can relate because she lost her father and there was nothing she could do.
Lunamaria isn't a shit shot and she and Rey use multiple packs for different scenarios. They get Goufs when Heine arrives
Heine is a mentor to all of them
The Extended are expanded upon and Stellar isn't a retard.
Biggest changes would be

Shinn snaps when he sees the Freedom and fires on it giving us the same scenario as in the show with him dodging Kira's slash. Shinn is the aggressive one in this case and continually attacks Kira.
The Gaia is used in this battle and Auel's memory returns and he thinks it's ZAFT killed Stellar and are using her machine. He attacks it but is stopped by Shinn. They fight and Auel realizes what Phantom Pain has been doing to them all this time with the memory wipes. He's killed by Shinn similarly to the TV show and his last thoughts are about how fucked up their lives have been. He thinks about Sting and Stellar before going boom.
