When it comes to SDFM itself, I don't really think there are enough changes to the story to really consider one of them to be objectively superior to the other. There are some name-swaps and some changes in minor setting details but the story of the crew remains almost entirely unchanged.

But when you look at the expanded franchises...
I liked Plus, Zero was mostly okay I guess, but I'd pick Southern Cross and MOSPEADA over Macross 7 and Frontier any day.
It's funny how purists still complain about the flower of life being used as a heat source in Robotech when the POWER OF MUSIC has gone to such silly lengths in Macross.

How old are you two? Just because music was a theme does not make it the center of the show, even someone on 4chan of all places should understand that.

And just because it's been about music since the original doesn't mean the original is all about the music.

Well it's from Reddit, what do you expect
>>
>>13791558
>>13791562
Yes and no.
Yes, Macross made money selling music like Gundam made money selling models. No, music itself is not the center of the original Macross. Human culture was.
It wasn't just music making the Zentradi freak out, it was kisses, bikinis, movie special effects, and any and every non-combat piece of technology or culture we have. Music was unsettling to the Zentradi, and it was inspiring to the humans, but what actually won the battle was reaction warheads and the barrier system.
Plus prominently featured singers as both the villain and love interest, Seven was all about singing to space whales, and Zero was about singing to floating rocks. On the whole, the franchise is now more about music than war, but it didn't start out that way.

They can't do the same culture shock shtick with every race especially considering it was done to its full potential already so they've been doing different shit while still tying it with music

>On the whole, the franchise is now more about music than war, but it didn't start out that way.
War is only a third of the equation even for the original Macross

Yep. Basically, Robotech fans are extremely defensive of their nostalgia, and won't just accept that there's not much reason for Robotech to continue to be pushed onto America, as it isn't the 1980's anymore.

Funimation's biggest sin ever was how they handled Dragon Ball Z (and depending on who you ask, Shin-chan and how they handled Case Closed) causing a huge schism in the fanbase especially considering how the company themselves reversed themselves on this policy, but aside from that and some other questionable policies they were for a long time the only company who could do consistent dubbing and consistent dual-language releases. So I would have taken Funi over HG no matter how questionable their policies

Saban is just a jew but he brought significantly more iconic shows over.

What about pic related, who did that but better?

No he didn't, he copied shows and stole footage. Power Rangers isn't even remotely the same series as Super Sentai. Saban was arguably worse than HG.

That's actually with a lot of their panels. Its the reason why they don't go to any cons unless someone calls up said cons and begs them to be invited along. Even then, in order to get people's butts in seats, they either need to announce they have new information on an "upcoming" project or they just reserve their panels before the much larger ones with more going on which will snatch up people just trying to save their seats early.

A lot of the time, they really don't have much of anything to really give an update on except for a bunch of broken toys from Toynami, some calenders, and maybe something else about long-delayed RPG books from Palladium.

Pic related is from a AnimeNEXT in 2012.

Arguably, Discotek and Right Stuf/Nozomi do ADV's job a little better, since they usually don't dub everything under the sun. Granted, Sentai is pretty much ADV 2.0, but still.

>It's funny how purists still complain about the flower of life being used as a heat source in Robotech when the POWER OF MUSIC has gone to such silly lengths in Macross.

Its a problem shared on both sides really. Robotech extremists also love picking apart Kawamori's trippy story elements in Macross, while ignoring Robotech's own crazy EU material with muscled space bears, scantily clad Amazonian women who control Robo-horses, and the ever-popular Protoculture energy source that powers everything, drives people insane, and also doubles over as a 'Force" like power that allows certain people to 'shape' certain events in the universe (Protoculture Shapings).

I've seen numerous occasions where they really get so uppity in people's faces that they'll even decree that Macross sequels aren't worth anyone's time and that Robotech is far superior in which it will certainly take viewers into a universe that "makes more sense". You really can't make this shit up. Everyone's arguing that their form of sci-fi voodoo is less insane than the other....!

Would Robotech even look remotely good on Blu-ray? Isn't Robotech by it's very nature composed of second generation film?

Harmony Gold's marketing manager, Kevin Mckeever, has made the statement that their stored footage of Robotech is on 16mm film. If this is true, its very possible to clean and polish it up to much more acceptable standards than what they keeping repeating on DVD (which really look like ass).

However, he's also trying to convince everyone that 16mm is just far too expensive for his company to remaster and they're waiting for the costs to go down. He's saying this after PBS managed to completely restore their Ken Burns Civil War documentary from 1990....PBS....As in the documentation TV network that runs on donations. And HG apparently can't keep up with that. I wouldn't be surprised if he's lying and that their archived footage is just outdated VHS stock.

But they do. People use the comics and the Mckinney books all the time to fill in all the plot-holes and continuity gaps in the animated portions of Robotech all the time. Even the few Robotech discussions on /m/ have numerous references to the Expanded Universe material in some way, shape, or form.

It also doesn't matter if people just want to ignore it, because even the current animated continuity with Shadow Chronicles sequels the Waltrip Bros' Sentinels comics with its' own Prelude To Shadow Chronicles series. It solidifies everything that went on in those books as canon.

I'm calling double bullshit. Yes, film is expensive to remaster but Robotech is the only thing they sell. If Animeigo could remaster Macross in 1999, there is zero reason HG couldn't do it in 2016.

But I also don't think they have 16mm masters. Robotech was edited on magnetic tape and sent to TV stations on magnetic. Why would they have 16mm prints? If they did, they would be sourced from the tape. Just smells like shit.
>>
>>13801466
OK, I found the source of that:

>To answer a question about Robotech on Blu-ray, McKeever showed a box that contained the original 16mm film that they received from Tatsunoko studios, which is how a lot of anime was aired back in the 1980’s. While the films aren’t in bad condition, they’re not in great condition, and the process to upconvert a 16mm film to high-definition video is prohibitively expensive at this point for them to attempt the conversion.

They received 16mm prints of the source materials. There is no Robotech on 16mm to be cleaned up. They would have to remaster all three series and then re-edit. Probably not worth the investment when fans eat the same shitty copies over and over.
>>
>>13801466

I know, right? He even stated in a convention in 2013 that remastering 16mm film to HD of any kind was "theoretical" and Harmony Gold just couldn't so it because its all just moon-science. Apparently someone must've fact checked him between tours because its' only in later appearances that he's finally throwing around the "its just out of our price range" card.

Bull-fucking-shit. The originals are still safe and sound in Japan otherwise the SDF BD box would not exist. All HG could ever conceivably have access to is tapes. Never film.

Man, the refitted SDF-3 really looks like shit. The original ship was a large unique mold of human and Zentraedi design, with a self-healing hull, its own planetary defense garrison, and everything: A true marvel of human/alien unification. Now its just a smaller overly-militarized White Base knock-off.

Really got to hand it to Harmony Gold to outright destroy the thing so they can refit the design and rename it into the "Shadow Dimensional Fortress" to avoid calling it "Super Dimensional Fortress", just to play it safe. Can't have characters blabbering around the name of a spaceship they have no rights to use in animation format.

If you look in the extras DVD of Love Live Alive, you'll notice that all of the "early animation" segments are actually what's presented in the movie. They just blurred the screen and added some extra lighting in certain places to make it look like things were finished. Really helps when things are completely out of focus.

Not him, but it wouldn't have to be the original first generation film reels. It's possible they got alternate prints or something.

You're probably right though. I don't know what the industry standard was at the time, but tapes seem like they'd be much easier to distribute.

Actually, both of the late SDF class fortresses are garbage. The SDF-4 was crippled by a single Quadronno, and nearly got its ass handed to itself by an Invid fleet, and it has four enormous particle cannons! The SDF-1 took on way more numbers by going up against an entire armada of Zentraedi warships and a space fortress.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm a Robotech fan who happens to contribute quite a bit of the comic/novel story elements in what little Robotech discussions we have here, and I'm ALSO the one who helps provide most of the legal information and various Harmony Gold fuckeries. Sorry man, I love Robotech for what it is but...shit company is shit. Its because of their incompetence that projects keep getting fucked over, and what little that does manage to get finished is just a dried up turd on a summer highway.

It really doesn't matter what topic you choose about Robotech. One way or another, it always boils down to some bullshit with HG. Can't get a series made because Harmony Gold keeps beating around the bush on actual work being done on it. Not getting remastered blu-rays because 16mm film is SCAAARRY. Continuity keeps getting fucked up because Tommy wants everything to be remade and rewritten so that it makes sense with Shadow Chronicles......And hey, How's that movie coming along? Oh right they're fucking around with two hack producers who made those stupid 300 and GI Joe films just to write a fucking script, with James Wan passing up production to go work on Aquaman, and with no set date for release...or even when actual production is supposed to start.

>>On October 26, 2012, Agrama was convicted after a lengthy trial involving the buying and selling of US film rights to the Mediaset media company at inflated prices.[5] As his age exceeded 70 years, he was exempted from direct imprisonment and served no actual jail time. According to the Los Angeles Times, prosecutors in Milan, Italy charged Agrama, along with former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, and ten others in a trial over tax fraud, embezzlement and false accounting at the Mediaset media company on November 21, 2006.

>>In 2013, Agrama and several others, including Mediaset Vice Chairman Pier Silvio Berlusconi, son of Silvio Berlusconi, and the Hong Kong-based Wiltshire Group of Companies were placed on trial for tax evasion and embezzlement with the broadcasting rights firm, Mediatrade. In 2014, all parties were acquitted in the first instance due to expiring statute of limitations.[6] A new appeals hearing will take place on January 20, 2016.[7]
