>oh no I'm going to die, let's get married
>oh we're saved, see you later my friend
>come listen to my new song "My Boyfriend is a Pilot", we're just friends though
>this is my cousin, Chad Pacifistcock, he hates you, isn't he wonderful
>oh you love me? I'm sorry I'm going off with Chad
>I think Chad's just using me for material gain
>Oh there's Flyboy, he seems to be having a good life for himself and is all but set up for like with Christmas Cake, better put a stop that
>I return your feeling, now provide for me
Is there a bigger slut in Macross than Minmay?
This, so very much. Teenagers are stupid as fuck. I doubt anyone here on this board didn't do some stupid shit when they were in high school.
And this is coming from someone who used to be a teenage girl. I don't like remembering how much of a bitch I was to some people.
I dunno, that would imply she actually had skills like planning and logic. Minmei is merely a bimbo. She got herself caught in the heat of the moment and didn't really realize until it was entirely too late that Chad Pacifistcock was a very poor choice of significant other and that even if it weren't for Chad she allowed her career to probably kill her chances to pull it of with Hikarick to begin with. I still hate her though.
She's such a turbocunt she makes her cousin look like a good guy
I'm okay with that.
Still better than the rapeslut from Plus.
The ending implied that she had the capacity to change and grow though
Plus Hikaru no doubt tapped that before the series ended. I mean they even were living together before Kamujin's last attack.
But Minmay in DYRL is perfection and is actually a legitimate contender for Hikaru's affection
From what little we can skim from what happens after Kamjin's attack on the SDF-1, it seems that she finally grows into a much more pleasant person, and learns to enjoy her position as a pop star.
Yeah she's dumb and vapid, she's a teenager, if you didn't do some dumb shit as a teen you were probably a nerd who grew up to be entirely boring.
you know in absolute fairness they really should have had a back up singer ready to go.
I always felt it was weird how most of the time in Macross we never see the zents reaction to any other kinds of music. It's like everyone on the planet was listening to the same bubblegum crap
THIS. THIS right here, in addition to all of OP's points, is why I always hated Minmay, and could never get by on "Oh well she's just a stupid teenage girl, and at least Hikaru/Rick winds up with delicious redheaded XO Space Cougar instead." Because she is portrayed as seemingly the single most important thing to happen to sway the entire Zentraedi force to defecting, and they NEVER bother to show them responding to any other form of culture. No classical music, no literature, nothing. Just humanity being saved by a shitty J-Pop idol.
Or would that be C-Pop? Is C-Pop a term?
really even then I just had to stop and ask, "Beyond right place and right time what made Minmei special"
Mac7 at least TRIED shit with those Jaming bird guys and even the rest of Sound Force where able to pump out Anima spirtia in the end.
fuck mac 7 ended with EVERYONE, literally EVERYONE singing
Or I guess you mean this. That step zoom they do is really something, you can really see the hastily done linework.
Bonus Hikaru being cis scum.
Episode 11 of Macross was originally aired in an unfinished state. The version on DVDs and Blurays was a later version with more finished animation, but it's still probably one of the roughest in the entire series. The production staff was clearly constantly having problems with the deadline, and this ep has some of the worst animation i've ever seen with Max's disguised Valkyrie in the hallways seemingly being animated in twelths when it normally isn't a good idea to go under threes for a walk cycle.
Good waifu taste right there.
M-Pop? Dunno, they seem to call themselves "Macrossians" (which, let's be honest, sounds cool as fuck).
I still find it hilarious every time people repost that interview with Itano talking about how shitty Frontier is, not because of the Frontier stuff but because of how he refers to Minmay as a piece of shit failure of a human being.
>People forget, Minmay is 14
She was born in '93 and the first episode takes place in '09. She's actually 15 and turns 16 after a few months. Hikaru is one year and one month older than her. Misa is 19 ( born in '90 )
Minmay was just a depressed nearly underage teenager girl who was getting out of an abusive relationship and Hikaru took advantage of that, cheating on Misa to live his daydream fantasy and hurting both of them.
How can you excuse his shit behavior?
Also she grows up like a fine, mature and beautiful lady. She just wanted to rekindle her love for songs, she considers Hikaru and Misa her dear friends. Hikaru knew that she'll never settle to be his housewife, she's too in love with her music.
She didn't know he had a girlfriend. And he was always coming to sniff at her crotch in a creepy fanboy way, anon. You sure have selective memory, but it was Hikaru who ditched Misa to spend time with Minmay. She didn't force him.
Hikaru was a dipshit. Misa deserved better and Minmay fortunately dodged a bullet and became a legend rather than Hikaru's lame housewife.
>No pacifist familiar that whores you
>Willing to sacrifice herself for the greater good without a Bright Slap (TM)
>Elder woman in the triangle
Yeah, such a carbon copy of Minmay...
Ranka was the teenager and lost like teenagers do in Macross, Anon.
Sherily mostly had her shit together and apparently was a decent, experienced musician and the show implies that she's on par with Alto, who himself was a famous and skilled actor in his field.
She's kind of a cocktease isn't she?
I really hope Freyja doesn't go the full retard route Minmei and Ranka went down
>come listen to my new song "My Boyfriend is a Pilot", we're just friends though
Did she ever say that? Because I'm pretty sure Hikaru was just too stupid/nervous to go for it
Minmei just kind of stops being important for like the middle of the show doesn't she? It's like she exists only so Hikaru can get depressed
Wasn't that kind of "obviously antagonistic bishounen" character sort of popular back then though?
>thinking there's something wrong with anime that has ideas that they are able to permeate throughout society because you hate the word meme without bothering to learn what it means
I started Macross 7 the other day and I'm 8 episodes in so far. Does the stock animation get any less noticeable? It was prominent even in the first episode.
Really, Hikaru only had two poor choices but at least when he was with Misa he had to step himself up as a person. When he was with Minmay he was just a dribbling love-struck idiot
I think it's about... episode 16 that show starts to get interesting and starts not being literally the same story every week. I don't remember them re-using a ton of stock footage at that point, beyond the ever ubiquitous shot of one of the Protodevlin VFs stealing the cockpit of a VF-14.
Minmei makes Hikaru a blithering fool
Misa makes Hikaru grow up
Ranka makes Alto into more of a big brother
Sheryl makes Alto into a man with real goals and desires
Freyja makes Hayate into...finding a purpose in life?
Mirage makes Hayate ??????
Basara never develops even one bit. He's forever a manchild with a guitar.
I kinda like Basara in some ways but in some episodes I just want to punch him. Like when he gets all pissy at Ray because Ray had installed missiles in the VF-19, but Basara would literally have been dead if it wasn't for those missiles. Yet he whines like a little baby because someone cared about him.
>Cuz Alto picked the shallow but hot bitch over the girl he actually seemed to have joyful interaction with
Huh? He picked Sheryl, the one the understood him and had good relationship with.
>The films are just films in-universe, canon is still the 'you are both my wings' ending
>He thinks Macross has a canon
Rankafags still using this excuse years after the fact even though everything is canon in its own way
>She was born in '93 and the first episode takes place in '09. She's actually 15 and turns 16 after a few months. Hikaru is one year and one month older than her. Misa is 19 ( born in '90 )
Why is a 19 year old second in command of a starship?
In the future, Minmay is still a cult.
That pretty much is the reason why Hikaru called her "oba-san" early in the show. Misa acted too old for her age, and if you read White Reminiscences, it's a lot worse.
>Turning Macross into a square
>Not wanting Mikumo to be in her own triangle drama
Mikumo actually not being in the main triangle (at least that's how it looked like) and Mirage instead actually got me interested
Is DYRL a good way to be introduced to macross? I've only watched the tv series and want to get my friend into macross and I was thinking of just watching the movie with him but i'm worried that in movie format some things won't be properly explored. Does the impact of events get downplayed with the condensed story? Are certain reveals like the zentradi being giants and shit less shocking in the movie? Or is it a movie that's meant to just be better animated fights for people that have already experienced the worldbuilding through the tv series
Sheryl is literally leagues better than little quirky girl. She reminds me of my cousin(cousinette?)when she was thirteen.
Mylene makes Gamlin into best bro
Sivil takes Basara on a wild ride across the Galaxy
Basara makes everyone FIRE BOMBER, from space vampires to an entire fleet of Meltrandi christmas cakes
I dream of a Macross series that is parodying it self by way of helicopters and death metal. For now I'll just live with Metalocalypse.
I like Ranka...
Milf Milia makes turn dick into solid concrete.
Well I'll be damned, she really is. Epidermal cysts or something. I always thought it was just a feminine name, as there are a bunch of Milias out there (Milia Rage from Guilty Gear, for instance). Huh...
Well, it'd only be a matter of time until the Zentradi discovered porn in their world. Even if there was no internet, lewd magazines would still be a thing.
Heck, all of the bits with them learning about sexuality were pretty hilarious.
>That scene were shrunken Exedol is getting driven through Macross city.
> driver tells him that lingerie store displays and saucy billboards are military secrets when asked
One of my favorite scenes of the show.
"Is that a new uniform?"
"Uhhhhhhh let's talk about that later".
Let's just say the production was very messy.
>was going to be longer, but could only afford 27 episodes at the time
>Tatsunoko "helped" Nue via having outsourced animation done by foreign studios
>the finished materials for one episode were apparently forgotten on a train
No it's not.
>Speak for yourself. I didn't do any stupid shit in highschool. But then again, I didn't do much of anything in highschool...
This is how it goes. You either do something stupid, or you don't do anything.
What happened to Minmay after SDF anyway? I've only seen Zero, SDF and DYRL but is she ever brought up again or just forgotten about?
While we're at it, when are we getting a spinoff about the bridge girls doing SOL related things?
Kim best girl obviously
She gets referenced quite a few times in 7, but mainly due to how she stopped the war in DYRL.
Canon-wise, she doesn't show up ever again. Flashback 2012 shows a single scene of her being on the Megaroad commanded by Hayase (and which Hikaru is also on) that carries the first generation of space immigrants out into the galaxy. Officially, Earth loses contact with them after they reach their destination and nobody knows what happened to them.
It's like Amuro and Char's fate at the end of CCA, officially they're listed as missing but they are effectively dead and never appear again.
>It's like Amuro and Char's fate at the end of CCA, officially they're listed as missing but they are effectively dead and never appear again.
Don't want to be THAT guy, but Char's Counterattack isn't canon.
