That's because they were forced to end it hastily since it had declining ratings.

Southern Cross had potential if it had better developed. I liked the idea of captured humans being brainwashed into serving the enemy.

80's Japan had a surprising amount of mecha anime that dealt with cultural and political misunderstandings over aliens.

It's okay. Not great but not terribly bad either. If you've got nothing else to watch, or if you just want to watch all the original shows that went into Robotech and/or the Super Dimension trilogy, it's a decent time killer.

What is the ending of Southern Cross?

I know in the Robotech bastardization, that I watched back in the 80s. They crash a ship into the remains of the ship containing the plant. Causing it to be released all over the place.

Dess, top dog of the Zor, intends to bombard Glorie to extinction in order to fet the Flowers of Life and escape on a pod. Seifreit kills him, and in order to save Glorie, stays on the ship and attempts to blow up its generator. Jeanne opposes, so Seifreit puts her in the escape pod and kisses her to calm her down. After activating the escape pod, Seifreit blows up the ship while dying in the process. As the ship explodes, pieces of it destroy most of the Flowers of Life plantation. The End.

Yeah, it ain't bad. It's a poor man's Macross. It tries very hard to recapture what made Macross good, it never succeeds but it tries hard. That points it well above any and all Macross sequels that don't even try to recapture the good stuff and focus on music instead.
