In the novel, its mentioned that feddie pilots sometimes carry their girlfriend's pubes around as goodluck charms called amulets. Amuro, who bangs Sayla in the novel, becomes concerned for his safety after one of the Pegasus's GM pilots is killed. So he asks Sayla for her pubes before A Boa Qu, she is pretty disgusted and turns him down. Amuro dies in battle, and Kai cries to himself that it was because he never got an amulet.

It's my head canon that Kai and Sayla became a secret thing after the war. Those Origin bonus chapters where Sayla helps those kids for Kai warmed my heart. I imagine when he dials up Luo & Company at the end its to call her.
