Video games do, as someone pointed out. They also make for good shields, and I've seen that in art (and in game stats).

The most obvious reason would be structural integrity. As far as whether or not it blocks their view, I think that most monoeyed suits with that center beam turn their head slightly to move it out of the way of their eye. That's a pretty insubstantial issue most of the time.
