I watched it when it was airing but I gave up on the discussion threads.

I rewatched portions of the TV series and parts of the movies recently.

I would say the TV series wasn't as good this time around, some of the story elements were a bit too out of nowhere. The action scenes still looked pretty good though, I still enjoyed those.

I absolutely hated it when it was airing, but I've warmed up to it a bit since then thanks to its action choreography and soundtrack arguably rivaling Plus. I still wouldn't rate it above okay at best though.

I really loved Frontier, it was a gorgeously animated CGI fest that made popular shows at the time like Code Geass look like shit and the movies looked even better.

the universe itself felt really lived in and grounded in reality; it was just a sleek, relaxed future city that kept the lolpolitics to the minimum and even made high school SoL scenes bearable. the characters were diverse and entertaining without pandering to too many fetishes and archetypes. While Alto was bland at times he was far from a useless lump and was always quick to take action and played the role of high school student-turned-professional soldier better than untold numbers of others.

the mecha designs were a quantum leap from previous shows but still recognizable while the battles were never lacking in good combat choreography (which was refreshing from Gundam 00's ugly beam spam and DBZ-tier hand-to-hand combat). it also had a really solid ending with a resolute conclusion that relied on a Double Daedalus Attack, Trench Run and Railgun to the face more than some handfisted UNDERSTANDING garbage.

while the Frontier movies were a good follow-up to show its obvious that Kawamori was given a bit too much intellectual liberty with how much emphasis was shifted towards the Idol side of the plot. it was fine in the series when it was an important part of the larger story but the movies made his Idoru fetish really obvious which honestly is hardly an industry worth celebrating. The 24 episode AKB48 commercial just made things worse, to the point that im actually pretty apprehensive about any new Macross project helmed by Kawamori.

stupid conspiracy angle did nothing good either besides produce the sexy Black Ops EX Gear soldiers.

one thing i think Frontier was really lacking in was atmospheric battles to really show off the flight capabilities of the VF-25's, unlike the anachronistic nonsense in Macross Zero.

AKB0048 was pretty fine. It was supposed to be an aidoru anime, and Kawamori gave us space aidoru with mechs and everything.

I enjoyed Frontier a lot more than I thought I would. Kanna's orchestral pieces really drew me in and the battle scenes were nice.

It just irked me a bit that just about everything was a call out to another Macross. Also 25th anniversary guys. VF-25, Macross Quarter, Ranka is 25% Zentradi, 25th Expedition Fleet. MACROSS IS 25 I GET IT

I know we are not authorized to like things that are too popular, because they are obviously overhyped pile of shit, but I still like Macross Frontier and I haven't watched the movie because they feel like opportunistic merchandising.

Everything in Macross Frontier was good except three thing :
- Slightly rushed plot-line, certainly because of that one/two fan-service episode.
- Cast LOOK slightly too young to my taste, however that's always been a problem of anime trying to use schooler as main character in serious affair. It doesn't help that Alto is indeed fit to be a Kabuki actre...or
- Klan Klan, I have nothing against the genetic bullshit they pulled, but you overdid that man... you could have her not aging older and still have Michael not wanting to go serious since they wouldn't age the same.


Now, my secret reason to keep with the series is that for once the MC choose a WIN-WIN-WIN situation and not some stupid mandatory shipping first-girl/best-girl.
Think about it : At the end of the show he can fly in a real planet atmosphere like any /m/an would with their toys. THEN he got two girls who DO NOT ASK HIM TO CHOOSE ! They are COMPETING for him and not seemingly expecting him to chose ! He can certainly nail both if he play his card right.

So I'm currently watching SDF and while I like the show I'm getting tired of Minmay being shoved into everything (like the battle for Earth becoming a pop concert). To me the first SDF Macross is the over hyped thing with nostalgia-google or not.

It sure gave us the recipe fort a very interesting franchise, but in itself it didn't knew what it was. A Parody ? Serious ? A space opera about war ? about culture ?

In the end Macross DYRL summed up everything that was really important in it, better.

please, Gundam rakes in hundreds of millions of dollars and Unicorn is essentially the highest selling anime off all time. those that see it as some sort of dying genre arnt looking at any of the real data.

IDORUS are just one-hit-one wonder fapping fuel that are easily replaceable and spend their entire careers getting exploited by the people above them. AKB0048 was hardly a top-seller and produced almost no merchandise; whatever brand-recognition it may have garnered for the AKB group was easily overshadowed by their one song in Wreck It Ralph and made all of Kawamori's creepy efforts pointless.

"Macross Missile Massacre" is a TVtropes phrase. TVtropes actually used to be a nice little website until it got popular (sometime in early 2011 IIRC) at which point it became a carcinogenic hellhole. Using TVtropes language is disliked for the same reason that emotes, signatures and motivational images are.

It was most probably aidorufags not wanting to get into anime and animefags not wanting to get into 3D aidoru that made it have bad sales.

Remove the links to AKB and replace their songs(they used the songs that would have fitted the scenes better anyway, stuff like Beginner, River, etc), it would have easily passed as Macross Lite and gotten better sales.

Really though, the story and stuff ain't so bad, besides, who the hell would have expected an aidoru anime to be about space and robots and spaceships and aidoru magic?

1st ep was okay

the more i watched the show the less i liked it

outside ozma and cathy the characters were bland they were just checking boxes to lure as many people as they could into the show

the plot or lack there of ended up as a mess

the art and world building were top notch and a handful of songs were good

overall it wasted potential see what they do nect

I thought this show as kinda ass. It did have some moments, and the music was overall enjoyable, but the plot was utter garbage and I didn't care about any of the characters. Can't really place exactly what it is, it's been a while since I saw it and all, but I just remember that it was ugly, and that the plot was needlessly convoluted considering that it was mostly just retreading old tropes with a bunch of unlikable characters.

The movies would maybe have worked better without the hideous stock footage from the TV series, and without the even more complicated plot restructuring of the 2nd film. The new animation was very pretty but it's kinda ruined when you get a shot of characters with no faces because it was lifted from the TV series.

I don't understand all the posts about the plot being bad or non-existent? I thought the whole thing with Grace trying to take control of the vajra and insert herself as queen of all humans was interesting even if she was insane.

It's the position of the pods that bother me, if they were at the wing root I think I'd like it better. As it is the whole wings just hang off the back in battroid and don't look very good, they at least fold up on the 27.

Didn't know having an opinion you don't like is lying. I never liked the VF-1's battroid. Most of the body being a nosecone with the legs plugged into the sides always looked awkward to me and the wings look really weird with the missiles attached.
