Original MS 5-7 line of Zaku one and two best, gouf is definitely good and arguably the Dom also. Hi-zak and Zaku three are just shitty imposters.

It might be some Zeon branding but the Gouf really is just a Zaku three, it builds on the designs of the zaku two, like the zaku two did on the zaku one. Efreet also builds on the gouf in a way similar to how the marasai built on the Zaku two. I just want to spend all day studying Zakus and just going on about it how it looks in both a design and a practical way.

Let's not exaggerate now. I dismissed it at first myself, but it's design really grew on me. Of all the starter mook mechs, it's the one that looks the most outclassed and left behind, which always ends up appealing to me.

I like the different aesthetic is has to a lot of the gundam mechs. The track shoulders and eye. The bulky cannister containers on the space versions. More than any of the other suits, it looks like a tank that grew bulbous limbs. The tanky looking armor bits are pretty bitching too.

That said, I'm still more of a Flag man. I love cyclops, but tv/visor-heads are my favorite.

Wow, I just checked. Those really were designed from a Tieren base. The actual kit looks fine, but the official art is god awful. Didn't like them in show either, now that I even recall them. They were only a round for an episode or two before everyone that mattered upgraded to cooler shit.

Still, they're even more separate from their Zaku-esque base than the Doms ever were, so I wouldn't really count them. Besides, I was thinking something much more like that fanart. Almost literally just cutting out the old engines and slapping the GN Drives in. But oh well.

Does anyone else not like the R-whatever Zakclones in G-Reco? They don't seem very similar at all except for the general color scheme, and they appear far less prominently than the Grimoire. What is that supposed to be? Dom or Gelgoog?

The Prototype Zaku (MS-04) came before the Zaku I(MS-05). The blue one I posted is YAS's version from the Origin. The original design(pic related) has no external power wires. YAS pretty much changed the design completely.

Long story short, mobilesuits were supposed to be power armor, not giant robots. The tubes were actual breathing tubes. This is also why MS are generally limited to the functionality of a human wearing advanced armor, like only being able to see what they turn their head to look at instead of being studded with cameras, or why a weapons platform designed almost exclusively for work in space considers legs to be mandatory.

The Origin Zaku I is pretty similar to the original design. The main change I see is the torso and sholders being more similar to those of the Zaku II. It and the prototype appeared during the same volume. I couldn't find any pics of it online, so I only have the pics I can take with my phone (sorry for the crap quality and terrible lighting).

The design of the zaku I, much like the other origin designs are very interesting to look at. Seeing Yas' slight variation on the classic designs in both a practical and aesthetic way, like the vulcans and belt fed gun, is nice.

Definitely ,the classic heavy, gritty, belt loaded, physical ammo gatling works well with the zaku because it also has room for semi realistic look as it is already fairly heavily armoured and those aspects can be really built on and shown off with some good shading and even slight weathering. I think the gouf custom loses some of the 'heavy' look as it keeps the ammo and the gatling together on the arm, making it seem lighter, if it had the same separation as the pictured zaku it could have looked much more intimidating.

Kaempfer is one of the older MGs (pre-2005 I believe). It's actually not that great from what I hear. The main thing it has going for it is a shit ton of weapons.

Still, I'd have to ask if the MG is worth it as a display piece, or something to idly pose, or if the HGUC is better for the price. I've only made MGs so far, but I'm not a scalefag, I can handle a smaller figure if it looks and poses better.

Just double checked, MG is 2001(!) and HGUC is 2008, I think if you disregard/account for scale, they'll probably both look pretty good, but the HGUC is probably more bang for your buck and less of a headache than the MG. Then again, I usually find MGs to be so much more satisfying to build/look at.

Answer's kinda obvious. Zakus = bad guys, so they tend to look more monstrous/fantastical
GMs = good guys, so they tend to get based more on IRL police/military, hence the tendency towards tacticool

I used to do a lot of gunpla painting and mods (had just started resin kits before I quit) until it got replaced with a stronger, more potent pony-based form of autism, so I haven't kept up to date. My guess would be that the HGBF kits are mostly just modifications of HGs, so I wouldn't expect it to be particularly better than the regular HGUC. I took a look at some pics, it looks like they just parts/color swapped the HGUC.

In fact I had an idea for a Gundam setting uses both of these concepts to explain having Mobile Suits in the first place; Due to projectile weapon use in or at a Space Colony being branded a War Crime (Because you do NOT want to render a several TRILLION Dollar piece of Space Real Estate uninhabitable by puncturing the hull!), War quickly reverted to Power Armor enhanced Melee.
To increase their intimidation factor to cow the locals into compliance, the size of these "Mobile Suits" quickly escalated til they reached the piloted-mecha Gundam norm.

Honestly I'm digging the Ax mounted more than the Chaingun, those that's probably because I thought of something similar for one of my Characters (Who is pretty much a normally human sized Zaku II) and his Vibro-heat Bat'leth...

Indeed, plus they are Cannon Fodder, so the dehumanization helps distract from them dying in droves to the main character.
Fun fact, the name "Zaku" itself is diverted from the Japanese word for Mooks, "Zako."

Haven't you watched the original MSG or Zeta?

The original Zaku was made by the main mech designer but they were able to do whatever they want, unlike the gundam, which had to fit the hero look. In universe it was THE zeon mech for most of the war, having many made as possi ble by Zeon's own manufacturing company, zeonic, as part of the classic zeon MS line. It's one of the oldest mobile suits and uses physical ammo and a heat hawk.

The hi zack was probably designed with the Zaku II in mind but adapted to fit the situation, and maybe also used to indicate the bad guys. It was made a number of years later by anaheim electronics, a neutral company that makes mobile suits for anyone who will pay them, The Hi zack was mainly for titans use, or at least what we see, and that conflict is smaller that the OYW, so the Hi zacks production and use is also presumably smaller. The titans also used different suits more frequently than zeon, and changed the production rates much earlier on, making the use of the hi zack extremely limited in comparison with the original Zaku II. In terms of performance the hi zack was made later, with advanced technology, so it performs better and can use beam weaponry.

The Zaku II and the Hi zack may look similar but they are considerably different.
