It felt more like bad philosophy of living jumbled up in a non-sequential timeline with many characters to fool you into thinking keeping track of everything is the same thing as thinking about a novel that deserves to be thought about.

I'm not Op and I agree that a lot of its supposed intelligence/complexity was artificial, but it was still entertaining enough to be readable and still far less vapid than a lot of other things you could be reading in spite of its flaws.
I admittedly haven't read much and almost nothing of contemporary fiction but for example the description of the marjuana addict in the beginning is one of the most psychologically accurate things i've ever read
