Do I need to have read The Iliad first in order to read The Odyssey

Kindof, but you can get away by having some general knowledge of the events. Just skim wikipedia, and remember the Horse wasn't actually in the Iliad.

the trojan horse episode was mentioned in the odyssey and detailed in full in the aeneid

Yeah it's in another, minor narration. If I'm not mistaken the Iliad ends with the funerary games in honour of Achilles's felled opponent
