1) Every piece is in first person.
2) Guess who that first person is? Every time.
3) The subject of the piece: the need for that first person to be loved and/or respected.
4) Also, the first person is always representative of a group/gender/ethnicity/sexual preference/religion.
5) The pauses and beats never correspond to the words, only the speaker. Slam poets give themselves away when they talk about "flow" and "rhythm"--they don't understand meter.
6) If there's rhyming, the rhymes are simple, unimaginatively paired one-syllable affairs (bed head dead red), or they end with -ology or -ization.
7) Chief rhetorical tactics: hyperbole and punchlines (..and I am hard as CALCULUS...)
8) Chief presentation strategies: yelling, emoting, and rushing. Because the words don't work on their own, and there's always too many of them for the time allotted.
9) Dollars to donuts, the piece was written within three days of it being performed.
10) Absolutely, positively no underneath. No subtexts, no metaphors, no discernible attention to sound, no interestingly paired words, and not one phrase or idea you'll remember three minutes after the speaker is done. Ever.

I performed at an open mic club in Cambridge Mass recently and while for the most part I agree with you entirely, there are definite exceptions to the rule (myself being one of them, obviously). However, this is only the case when it directly define itself as 'slam' poetry—but not all poetry read aloud on stage in front of an audience (very often consisting of feminists, SJWs, empowered black students, and other obnoxiously liberal charlatans who love to snap and clap themselves on the back whenever they hear a painfully cookie-cutter line about why they're so progressive and pure and proud to be among such a wonderfully like-minded and, much more importantly, right-minded mob of merry pseudo-intellectuals) is slam poetry.

Anyway, in case you were curious about my experience performing: the first poem I read was a grocery list, the second about blackmail. Tee-hee. I was cut-off for 'going over the time limit,' but really they couldn't handles.

Women are cruel in a way you can't possibly appreciate until you see it from the inside. Lack of worth in a suitor translates to complete "badness." They feel the same license to exploit, abuse, humiliate, etc. a person if they're not an Impressive Male Specimen that the average man feels about triple-convicted child rapists or whatever. There's almost a weird hatred there for failed, weak men. Even among the nicest, most reflective ones, there is always this tinge of enjoying shitting directly down a beta male's throat. Especially when that beta male is cluelessly supplicating, doesn't realize his own unworthiness, etc.

There's some quote like "young men delight in thinking that women are angels, and are dismayed when they learn that it's not always so." If there's any incommunicable instinct that I wish I could beam directly into the minds of all dudes, one of those things you can only learn by getting your battle scars from it first-hand, it's just how petty and mean women really are. It's so hard to describe the juxtaposition of what your dick wants you to think they are, and what they really are.

Just remember, women have no sense of their romantic or even their sexual power over you. They benefit from it, they're immersed in it, but they don't embody it gracefully or graciously. The chivalrous worship that some part of your brain wants to give to them isn't reciprocated on any instinctive level by them, there is no yin / yang harmony waiting to happen there. They are basically short, weak, listlessly hedonistic men, boring and petty and selfish by default, who have been born with a silver spoon between their legs. They will not be nice to you if you kneel and offer your heart to them. That cooing "awww" moment where they realize the depth of your love is more substantial than some alpha male's Lamborghini only exists in movies. Women exist to take the hearts of supplicants and sell them on the black market to pay for the alpha's Lambo lease. Especially be wary if you meet one or end up dating one and find yourself thinking "this one's DIFFERENT."

Those ones are the ones that take the other organs too. Always close yourself off a bit with women. The transcendent friendship your culture tells you you'll find with them is a misguided delusion of degraded Platonic love. They don't understand it and they never will.

I have a theory that the reason that millennials (myself included) play up being the victim is because we grew up in the 90s and early 2000s, a time when "misunderstood, brooding heroes" were at the forefront of popular culture (or at least marketed to kids, anyway)

Does this explain the horrible abnormality of slam poetry? No.

I think there's something wrong with art, maybe. Or the way it is translated to the lowest artistic denominator (i.e. slam poets).

I could see that playing into it, but I think the prevalence of a feeling of "victimhood" among 20-something millennials stems from three things:

1. Generally, it is a generation that was told they could do whatever they want because everyone is a special snowflake. Those who can't cope with the reality of being average have a lot of pent up resentment that life has not given them the things they perceived it as promising.

Social networks didn't destroy our socializing, we never had it and thats why we use social networks. Everything is just an attempt to pretend we have practical skills and social skills, to trick ourselves into thinking we have the value we so deeply crave. There is no difference between /pol/, tumblr feminism, slam poetry, whatever, it's just a circle jerk to make you feel better.
