My ability to focus recently has been weak. The gf convinced me to try Ritalin, but I'm afraid of the long term effects.

try the pomodoro method. i have adhd (or something like it) and it helps immensely when it comes to reading or writing when I don't feel the flow.

I play abrasive music if possible and write with a pen on lined paper. Walking before a writing session always increases my creativity.

I like to say some prayers before studying/reading. I suppose it's silly to most of you, but it gives me a sense of purpose and duty if I am doing it for God's glory and the benefit of myself, my family and my nation. I suppose that falls under mental exercises/meditation/reflection.
A well lit room, or preferably a room with ample daylight and no distractions, music, or anything like that.
