Is Gene Wolfe supposed to be a good author?

Or just "good for science fiction"
>>
>>7669156

little bit of both.
>>
He's better than alot of "literary" fiction authors tbqh
>>
Purple prose shit narratives desu
>>
Science Fiction is only like 1/3 of his entire catalogue
>>
>tfw my library only has the 1st and 4th book of the new sun in circulation
why.jpeg
anything else worth reading by him?
>>
Reminder that "Peace" is a brilliant work of realistic literary fiction. It just happens to have a horror novel hiding inside it.
>>
>>7669227
>horror novel
>literary realism
no
>>
>>7669156
i enjoy reading a story and stopping every fifteen minutes to google a word that turns out to be middle high norman for 'cistern' and then i go "wow this author knows way more words than me pretty cool" and then i lose my place in the book and it turns out the cistern didn't mean anything it was just an incidental mention

i guess the author wanted to show off those words
>>
>>7669508
>not just getting the meaning via context
>not bookmarking
>>
>>7669190
this.
>>7669227
this too
>>7669508
kek

He's a brilliant author. The only reason he isn't a part of the serious literary establishment is because harold bloom hasn't discovered him yet.
>>
>>7669156
why are ther soo many people named Gene in the scifi community

Gene Wolfe
Gene Roddenbury

i guess it's in their Genes
>>
>>7669521
>thinks bloom says what's part of the "serious literary establishment"
never have i kekked this hard
>>
>>7669542
You know that was just an example right?

fucking retard.
>>
>>7669564
of your stupidity. if you had any idea of the "literary establishment" you'd know that he's part of it. there's more to it than bloom retard
>>
>>7669156
is he trying to eat his own face
>>
>>7669539
You named two.

There are more Terrys.

Terry Brooks
Terry Pratchett
Terry Goodkind.

Alright, I only named three.
>>
>>7669218
My local used book store, which has litterally over 1 million books, only has like 6 gene wolfe books. Most from the 1980s and in crummy condition.

>>

I'd like to think its because no one wants to sell their Wolfe books after buying them.
>>
i started reading his books a decade ago because he looked like doctor robotnik

serious

I believe you, absolutely would have done the same

>>Use Tvtropes terms when discussing literature
>>Expects to be taken seriously

I fucking hate this. Tvtropes has done more to ruin serious critical analysis than anything before or likely after it. Everything is reduced to expressions of arbitrary cut-up elements which are applied with the most tentative connection to the work they profess to explain, reducing analysis to the identification of pop-cultural memes, ignoring the work on it own premises and the context surrounding it.
>>
gene wolfe is too literate for science fiction
and too science fiction for literature

he occipies a netherworld thanks to the genre atrophying due to neckbeards wanting licensed media trash, and the establishment putting science fiction in a ghetto decades ago
>>
>>7673965
This. Also, the way autists expect people to know this shite is bad too and the le wacky names don't make sense. The page for human resources has nothing to do with the topic but instead that's on a page called inhuman resources. The whole site is shite.
>>
>>7669156
Somewhere in-between IMO. He's not a bad author as literary fiction authors go, and he's a cut above many in the sci-fi/fantasy field.
>>
>>7669190
Devil in the Forest is a historical/ya novel
Peace is literary fiction
Latro is and Pirate Freedom are historical fantasy
Wizard Knight is high fantasy/sword & sorcery
Everything else is some sort of science fiction

> 3 threads about Gene Wolfe
Good to see that the wolfeposting is alive and kicking, but i suspect a slimy croat is around here.
>>
>>7673973
Dont' forget he has written a load of short stories too. Most are sci-fi, but there's a good amount of literary fiction too.
>>
>>7673968
I believe he will get recognition with time since everyone who loves quality sf is bound to love him. His novels don't seem to be fading.
>>
>>7673977
I always am but I never post Wolfe threads.
>>
>>7671511
I'd love to own physical copies of Wolfe's work. I read 99% ebooks but every now and then I like to get something physical.
>>

You think it be like these, but it don't
>>
>>7674035
Too bad he doesn't have as many haedcover editions. The New Sun omnibus looks awful
>>
I haven't read him, but I know it's genre trash. Why the fuck would you bother reading shit like him when you could read someone with deep messages and themes like Dosty?

Wolfe is just Reddit shit for fucking plebs, if you like his Reddit shit, then fuck off back there.

You saw the imgur pic or something?

Back in the early days, posting trite shit like Wolfe just wouldn't happen.

The term purple prose is much older than tv tropes, friend.
>>
I know someone is a moron when they don't like pre1990 Gene Wolfe. The man is a true one of a kind genius and he won't be bothered by society's bullshit conformity. He will write what he wants to write. The greatest.

Only socialist dimwitted inutile apes think Wolfe is trite, jigger puff. Take that bunk and blow it out your nether regions. Fools who can't comprehend sublime glory are turned off by wolfe, afraid of breasts and trembling at the thought of women, who dominate them and then go sleep with Gene, because his mustache rides are far better than yours could ever be. Subhuman morons.
>>
>>7673965
>purple prose
>TVTropes term

you're a disgrace to the crown
>>
>>7674309
I am a socialist who loves Gene Wolfe.
>>
>>7674343
Then I forgive you for breeding weakness and dependency into humanity and allowing bottom feeders to continue to suckle at a dry breast - as they scream i have no abilities, but oh so many needs. Wolfe appreciation rights a lot of wrongs.

I'm not a social democrat lmao. Spend less time on /pol/.

He is a magnificent writer, truly one of the best of the 20th century. A grandmaster of thematic depth and subtlety.

I'm readin the Book ofthe New Sun now.
I know I'm a pleb for saying this but I just can't deal with the fact that Severian will never physically satisfy his love for Thecla in any way.
>>
>>7675045
but he did
>>
>>7675100
Smelling her hair doesn't count.
>>
>>7674657
All books I've read with his recs were pretty good.
>>7675487
He fucked her and licked her tits
>>
>>7675518
So she comes back to life? No, don't tell me.

Is Jack Vance any good? I bought the Dying Earth series for €17 new on amazon.
>>
>>7675533
Didn't read him.
And no, he is just ashamed to tell you so he skips to the point where he's holding her tits
>>
>>7675572
I think you might confuse her with another female character, she's the one that dies at the beginning with Severian going as far as to hold her hand and smelling her hair. That or I'm reading a heavily censored edition, if she doesn't revive.
>>
>>7675597
Yeah, Thecla dies at the start and he has sex with her which is the first time he breaks his oath which is where a lot of the guilt comes from.
>>
>>7675614
The prostitute isn't Thecla and fucking women doesn't count as breaking the oath, though.
>>
>>7675627
I know. He conceals that he fucks thecla. That's why he doesn't return to the brothel later.
>>
>>7675679
And where did you get that?
>>
>>7675597
Sev doesnt tell everything as it happens. Sometimes he'll recount a detail that dramatically changes a situation of he mentined it as it was happening.
>>
>>7675699
His later on reminiscent of the whole thing.
>>
>>7675721
>>7675742
Fuck. Can't wait to get to that point now, I'm only past half way through the first volume.
>>
>>7675748
Yeah, he talks about things that happened between him and Thecla long after they happened. Stuff that retroactively changes their relationship.
>>
>>7676163
I don't remember whether it's actually retroactive or he's just recalling things he'd written about differently because it wasn't in the same book
>>
>>7669156
Get him out of the sun he's melting

>>
>>7669156
I'd say he's up there with some literary fiction authors for what he does. Definitely better than most fantasy fiction.
>>
>>7676301
Does he? He seems to me like a jolly old man. I'd love to have a beer with him.
