I used spark notes to get by in high school, I am now studying math at university and I don't want to remain illiterate any longer. Should I just start with the recommended books or are those too advanced

The Tunnel by William Gass.

seems just as complex as the starter kit.

i am asking if I need to start with a book like harry potter before moving to the /lit/ approved. I have never read a book in my life.

They are too advanced. Honestly just start with the Metamorphosis.

I started with this and The Stranger, worked well enough

These. Also Demian or Siddhartha by Hesse. Either can be read in a few hours and are just dense enough to be captivating and emotive.

Maybe Godel Escher Back if you haven't read it.
Also Borges might be up your alley, in particular 'The Library of Babel' for some combinatorics.

When you start going back for classics I recommend Much Ado About Nothing and The Misanthrope. They're easier than say the Divine Comedy.
