1. Should I read Infinite Jest
2. Why
>>
>>7619334
I find Infinite Jest too pessimistic to read actually.

Yes
Because
>>
1. No
2. So you'll understand /lit/ memes
>>
>>7619338
You don't read much, do you
>>
1. Yes.
2. I won't.
>>
>>7619334
1. Yes
2. IJ threads act as containment threads for DFW, Gaddis and Pinecone faggots so that actual readers can discuss different books
>>
>>7619334
I read 200 pages and dropped it. There must be more to life.
>>
1. Most likely
2. Is some life affirming shiz m9 and exit point of western literature too and you will now get way more dank memes
>>
>>7619723
actually I only read feel good self help books
>>
Serious, when and why did Infinite Jest become a meme on /lit/?
>>
>>7619885
just before you came here from reddit, so about a month ago. and we decided it would be a meme solely to confuse you. I guess the jig is, as they say, up? you can go back to reddit now?
>>
yes, so you can meme about it
>>
>>7619920
>implying you have to read the book to meme about it

i'm responsible for ~1/2 the DFW threads at any given moment and i haven't read past the first 3 pages.
>>
>>7619749
200 pages seems to be the classic drop point.
>>
>>7619749
Hey me too. And it wasnt due to difficulty.
>>
>>7619885
Late 2012 IIRC.
>why
It's quirky and it blushes.
>>
I read it coming off Adderall. It was a fun read one summer break when I was in uni, had no responsibilities, managed about 50 pages a day. Only read if you enjoy long novels though.
>>
Its the greatest book released in under 20 years
>>
>>7619749

lol @ wasting this much of your life.

Try 54 pages.
>>
>>7620051

You can't tell people to go back to reddit when you yourself are a human trilby

This.

personally i liked it a lot because it helped me navigate my struggles with addiction and also the conflict between sincerity and irony that seems to be such a large part of being a thinking person in the world today

plus the plots are cool and there's lots of half-to-3/4-funny parts and his names and ways of describing characters are really good and some of the technology he predicts is pretty funny and accurate, etc etc

also arguably 'the novel of our generation' (dare you to find me another one)

you'll spend realistically 24-36 hours reading it, think of how many hours in the last month you've spent on this shitty Cambodian claymation image-sharing board c'mon do it bro
>>
>>7623642
But I turn off my brain here. When I'm reading I use mental energy
>>
I'm going to read it in honor of the 20th anniversary. Not looking forward to it
>>
>>7623698
lol you poor faggot
>>
No.
No.
>>
>>7619334
A. No
B. It's a meme
>>
>>7619749

Interesting. It gradually gets a lot more coherent around 200-220 pages and onwards. Did you realize that?

I can understand how someone could be turned off of DFW's writing. It's pretty autistic at times.

It's pretty good.

Any book that's talked about in positive way here for a long time inevitably gets shit on, usually by people who either didn't read or didn't understand it.

it took me 3 months to finish (reading & finishing other books alongside it) was worth it, I guess.
but to change it into a DFW appreciation thread..

>>

Reading it right now and so far is shit. I don't know if you should read it, but to be honest this futuristic bullshit ain't my deal. Spare me the bullshit and give me some good characters and plot!

The Literature returns. Join me in destroying the parasite Pynchwallonace, slaying the beast. No more blood fed to these overfat ticks, these snake oil hucksters, The Worldly Shut-In and The Sincere Academic Kamikaze will cause suffering no more!

read more than the first 100 or so pages
>>
>>7626631

>reader stops at 200 pages
>you stopped before it was getting good, faggot!
>reader stops at 400 pages
>you may as well finish it now, loser, who cares if it isnt good?
>>
>>7626627
What? GR had characters and a plot, it was just organized in a really new and original way. I still see echoes of its structure in more plot-driven works like Mao II.

But yeah, don't read Infinite Jest it is trash.
>>
>>7626639
>I promise the juvenile trash was good! it wasnt like that other juvenile trash everyone fawns over, I promise! it's a better kind of juvenile trash!

>>7626644
Stop these projections, you're not right.
>>
>>7626646
>you're hurting my feelings anon, stop expressing your opinions!
>>
>>7626644
Quit getting so buttmad, Infinite Jest is like the Giver with its ham-handed themes but the author sprinkled some random words from a thesaurus like septuagenarian and disdyakis triacontahedron so people who wasted their youth in grad schools (like him) could scrawl footnotes on his footnotes in his book about junior tennis and Quebecois separatism (yawn). Oh it's OK he ties it all together by echoing Oprah that technology is addicting us.

That and the prose is clunky because of the lazy diction. Give me Pynchon any day of the week.
>>
>>7626659
Pynchon is just as worthless. I can understand that you prefer one shit over another shit. Doesnt mean that they're not both utter shit. Offer me your favorite line from GR, say, and I'll offer you a line from one of my favorite novels. Ulysses. (a book that is actually worthwhile when being inventive and original)
>>
I'll take it easy on you and go first.

Mr Bloom walked behind the eyeless feet, a flatcut suit of herringbone tweed. Poor young fellow! How on earth did he know that van was there? Must have felt it. See things in their foreheads perhaps. Kind of sense of volume. Weight. Would he feel it if something was removed? Feel a gap. Queer idea of Dublin he must have, tapping his way round by the stones. Could he walk in a beeline if he.hadn’t that cane? Bloodless pious face like a fellow going in to be a priest.
Penrose! That was that chap’s name.
Look at all the things they can learn to do. Read with their fingers. Tune pianos. Or we are surprised they have any brains. Why we think a deformed person or a hunchback clever if he says something we might say. Of course the other senses are more. Embroider. Plait baskets. People ought to help. Work basket I could buy Molly’s birthday. Hates sewing. Alight take an objection. Dark men they call them.
Sense of smell must be stronger too. Smells on all sides bunched together. Each person too. Then the spring, the summer: smells. Tastes. They say you can’t taste wines with your eyes shut or a cold in the head. Also smoke in the dark they say get no pleasure.
And with a woman, for instance. More shameless not seeing. That girl passing the Stewart institution, head in the air. Look at me. I have them all on. Must be strange not to see her. Kind of a form in his mind’s eye. The voice temperature when he touches her with fingers must almost see the lines, the curves. His hands on her hair, for instance. Say it was black for instance. Good. We call it black. Then passing over her white skin. Different feel perhaps. Feeling of white.
>>
>>7626649
"it's shit" is not an opinion. it's fucking nothing.
>>
>>7627266
okay, that's your opinion that it's not an opinion, however, i can assure you, regardless of your provocative bias, it is most certainly an opinion to say that infinite jest is juvenile shit.
>>
>>7626673
Pynchon is Joyce's heir.
>>
>>7626659
well to be honest it sounds like you missed the point of the whole seperatism angle...
its not actually about Canada, its a metaphor for something deeper (seperation in general, and how it functions)... the mundane aspect of that is part of the point.

GR, IJ, and Ulysses are all very similar and anyone who likes anyone of those and dislikes another probably hasnt properly read them
>>
>>7627291
hahahahahahahahaahahahaha
>>
>>7627291
Pynchon is Joyce's hair.
>>
>>7627321
i would argue that GR, IJ and Ulysses are all really esoteric, unconventionally epic novels with meta-qualities and in that way they follow a similar bloodline (especially in terms of scope)
>>
>>7627331
holy shit

do you really follow the /lit/ memes this autistically

IJ GR and Ulysses are superficially similar and grouping them as a meme trilogy is a silly little in-joke, but apparently people actually take it seriously?
>>
>>7627340
idiot.
you havent even read all three of these books.
the meme trilogy is a meme itself.
where do you think memes come from you fucking moron?
>>
>>7627344
>he cares this much about his memes

time to get off 4chan and read a book anon

>>
>>7627358
wew lad
>>
>>7627349
if anyone needs to get off 4chan its you moron.
95% of people on this board, likely including you, do not proerply understand these books let alone have bothered trying to read them.
They are the "meme trilogy" because of their difficulty and similar qualities they share, and because most peopel dont even bother reading them
IF YOU WERENT A MORON AND DIDNT JUST BUY INTO MEME 4CHAN CYNICISM YOU WOULD KNOW THIS
so its you who needs to read the books idiot.
i already have.

The more I read people on 4chan talk about Infinite Jest, the more I'm convinced to never ever read it. It's almost like the faggots on here read it only because it's the "cool thing to do". Half of these losers probably didn't even read it anyway.
