Im at my university library right now and its empty because most plebs arent in classes and they only come here to do class work
There is a MAJOR qt a the circulation desk
Somebody rec me a good book to check out to impress and strike up a conversation with the QT working at the desk.
Be quick pls
if you're going to check out something russian check out pushkin or lermontov or even goncharov
tolstoi and dostoevski are gonna make you look like a freshman reading babby's first real book
There is a 100% chance this MAJOR QT at the circulation desk is not a severely judgmental autist like you, me, and the rest of this board. In fact, it's most likely that she's a student working part time at the library and has no real interest in literature. Her favorite books are probably written by John Green and Nicholas Sparks.
There's a law of diminishing returns on trying to appear extremely sophisticated. Tolstoy and Dost are just dandy in this situation.
Are they really seen that way by normal people outside of /lit/?
I know on here they are considered entry level, but in real life I have yet to meet somebody who enjoyed anything other than Sci-fi and genre fiction.
If I met somebody who liked "pleb shit" I would honestly be stoked.
>Are they really seen that way by normal people outside of /lit/?
i assume she has a reasonable degree of literacy. they're regarded that way by literature students and/or literary people.
>Her favorite books are probably written by John Green and Nicholas Sparks.
maybe. in that case checking out anything would do. why not hedge your bets in case she is literate?
The books themselves aren't seen that way, but people who are seen reading them sort of are... not by everyone, just by fellow /lit/-type NEETs etc. It's like reading Plato: to some degree, it's necessary foundational work, but you should keep it secret just because there's a sort of standing presumption that you've already read it.
i've met some authors at book festivals and such, i guess...
Go for something middlebrow like Murakami. It is a fact of life that girls just aren't into highbrow interests, so trying to impress her with something truly intellectual will just make you look like a weird little autist. The best way to appear incredibly intelligent is to pretend to be quite intelligent, occasionally talking about meme-tier pseudo philosophy.
Oddly enough, I live with one. I completely lucked the fuck out when I decided to just live with random roommates in my college apartment.
I was a Lit major and he studied Physics. We were unpacking the extra little boxes a couple days after the initial move-in and he had a bunch of books. Joyce, Pynchon, Marquez, Murakami, etc,. And I know, "Blah, blah those are pleb tier" but in real life, the chances of running into people who actually read lit is somewhat rare. I was just happy to have someone to share and talk about books with.
He ended up being my closest friend. I'm going to be the best man in his wedding next May.
>It is a fact of life that girls just aren't into highbrow interests
*tips respectfully *
Tolstoy is fucking shit compared to Dosty though. I'm yet to read him, but most of his shit is just fancy balls and rich people. Whereas Dosty has really deep themes and deep messages and shit about life and existential shit. Crime and Punishment was fucking epic - really deep themes, check that one out brah.
I'm in love with a girl called Elisabeth who was working on the basement level of the Strand Bookstore in NYC in August. Only saw her once, and I don't live in the USA so it's a little tricky.
Something you actually want to read, and can engage in discussion about if prompted, lest your transparent ploy fall through.
Be prepared to have your book checked out with no Smalltalk occurring, unless you gun for it, but that'd make it obvious.
Best hope you're a cutie pie.
Then you'd best be charming and nice or some shit.
Worst case scenario is you rock up with a book, try to gush about it, choke because you don't actually know what you're talking about and she sees through your game like wet rice paper.
Conversely, just checking out a hard book without trying to engage her and expecting that to impress her will likely lead to you being forgotten about as soon as her next bathroom break.
Just ask her name and if she likes working the library when it's quiet.
A direct interested approach always gives you a better shot than creeping about.
>current accepted concencus is that male and female's brains function the exact same way
This is such a ridiculous response that it can surely only be bait, but I'll respond anyway because this is one of my areas of interest.
Decades of research has provided evidence to suggest that men's and women's brains are different, and operate differently. MRI and fMRI scans reveal that there are some very obvious structural and functional differences between the brains of men and women. This ties in with the predictions of evolutionary psychology, and research from animal studies. After all, with about ten times the level of testosterone affecting the male brain, why wouldn't it develop differently?
Furthermore, studies on newborn babies have also revealed gender differences in the way boys and girls react to certain stimuli. Feminist academics (now there's an oxymoron) like Cordelia Fine have pointed out some of the flaws of these studies, and as far as I know some of the criticism is valid. However, this simply means that a few studies aren't as good as we thought they were - it does not mean that there are no innate differences between men and women. Yes the brain has the capacity to change itself to a certain extent (neuroplasticity), but that in no way means that all the differences we observe between male and female brains are the result of 'socialisation'.
The most likely explanation is that the brain develops through a combination of innate and environmental factors, and the interplay between the two - a theory called the epigenetic approach.
t. Master's in social science who has to put up with shit left-wing 'academics' all day long
Typed that all out on my tablet - not near a computer unfortunately so I can't find the papers I've made mention to there. But if you're really interested, you should read The Delusions of Gender by Cordelia Fine for the feminist argument, the letter exchange between Fine and Simon Baron-Cohen to see how he responded to her criticism, and The Blank State by Steven Pinker for an explanation of why certain ideologically-driven scientists are trying to deny the existence of human nature (including sex differences), and why the evidence shows that they are wrong.
Yep, at uni im friends with two patricians. I met both of them on my freshman hall and I had some books on my shelf (Martin Amis, Peake, Broch, Pynchon, Rimbaud, just generally stuff regarded pretty well) and they both started sharing their favorites. One was interested in contemporary stuff like DeLillo and Saunders as well as the Victorians and the other likes the Romans and the Germans. Three years later and the latter is majoring in classics and recs me great translations and the other is doing an honors thesis on Roth and Munro. I lucked out, honestly. We always have great conversations
Yes, but very few. I met a middle aged guy at a cafe who actually knew what was going on when he saw me reading pre-socratic philosophy, and then I met a Chilean couple--one a lawyer and the other one a literary critic--who are the only ones to have appreciated that I read all of Livy.
A handful of other people have at least heard of real lit, but have not read much of it.
>THe current accepted concencus is that male and female's brains function the exact same way
Haha, oh wow. You're not studying science, are you? Don't even bother answering, I know for a fact because you confused the scientific method with burden of proof. Consider fucking off back to reddit and killing yourself promptly afterwards.
The only response guaranteed to start some sort of conversation.
>Living in a wanna be socialist utopia and having all your wishes filled by the government while being cucked by Ahmed
>Not bearing 7 months of crippling heat in a racial mosaic and then rejoicing when the blessed rains of El Niño finally hit
>Not enjoying a constant Mediterranean Bacchanalia driving you into nihilism
There has literally never been a good author from south of the tropic of cancer
The only good African author was Albert Camoo
>buy Gravity's Rainbow
>qt working at the desk brings up that its her boyfriends favorite book
>my soul when
by the way whats with /lit/ being on point with qt posting? and whats with everyone saying "on point" is it a recent thing?
come at me bro, internet people threatening me is so scary
You sound like a butthurt autist desu baka SENPAI ;) *tips meme*
No but seriously your an idiot of you don't believe him. Agreeing that men and women have different brains is different from saying one is innately better or worse.
Oh I'm waiting. How soon are you coming to kick my ass? I have a busy schedule. Are you free friday at 2?
It should be intro to psychology shit, but psychology is becoming increasingly left-wing and students (at my university at least) don't get taught the biological argument. You're right that it's not difficult stuff, but you won't necessarily know it just by studying psychology.
Look at her and smile (a confident smile)
>she doesn't smile back
>she smiles back
Approach her and say hi.
That's literally it, you fucking autists
