I started working with electronics when dad brought a computer home from work. It was the size of three refrigerator cabinets. It was old back in '73, and not supported my the manufacturer for some time. I learned how to repair it, then extend it's memory, etc. Funny bit is my replacement memory banks were 8 times the capacity of each of it's refrigerator sized memory banks, and fit on a single circuit board about a foot square. That meant two of the refrigerator sized cabinets were not needed anymore. Eventually I replaced the main processor using TTL chips, and I reduced the computer to just 5 circuit boards and it ran faster too. Initially each card was the equivalent of one TTL chip. I then transferred the logic over to a wire wrap board, and changed the timing to as fast as the TTL chips would allow. I've kept playing with electronics during the rest of my life.

It wasn't a PC. It was an early resistor Transistor logic based computer from the late '50s or early '60s. Dad's work was trowing it out because nobody wanted it. It was cheaper to buy and power a newer model computer than to power it. The memory banks were core memory. 4k words data, and 4k words program. That's it. The RPI3 I'm using has a million times the memory that computer had.

I made some level translation logic that allowed me to use TTL circuits, and 16k bit SRAM memory chips to replace each bank and expand it's size. Each chip was around .8" x .4" and two of them couple be placed in each square inch. It only took 8 chips to replace each memory bank cabinet. 4 square inches of board space per cabinet. That is how much things had advanced in size reduction.

In the development I lived in we had an engineer from Brookhaven Labs that did electronics work for them. He helped me initially learn electronics and programming in machine language.
