Both guys and girls have open shower rooms at gyms starting in jr. high in most of the US (5th or 7th grade) and have to use them in certain after-school sports, and sometimes are told they are required to use them at least once in PE (after the mile run test). So it depends on the school and region I guess, but maybe that's just me and my generation -- I was in jr. high in the end of the 90s when homosexuality was still only ever implicit on network TV, except for Ellen, and *nobody* in my HS was out. Like I asked around and the possible objection never even came up with the boys wrestling team, who were *required* to do group showers after every practice, and even though they still used insults with each other including about being gay like guys do. I think being gay at that age just wasn't acknowledged as a possibility in our school.

I don't know if the fact that there's teens who are out in the media now changes the culture of communal showers at schools. Maybe someone who's been in more recently at a school they know had no problem with communal showering in the 90s can comment?

This is where things get jumbled up. I have talked with plenty of trans women, both here and in real life. From what I understand none of them think they are cis women. But they are women. (Drop the trans)

Its like this. Think of your current girlfriend or ex. Imagine they were born bio male but kept their personality, and current cognition. That is essentially being trans. You love/loved your gf/ex. I mean I don't think it is easy to make a sweeping statement about any group, no matter what it is. Like take the lesbians here, we likely all have pretty different personalities from each other, but we are all lesbian women.

I think we all have a common thread, and I think that some trans women are more similar to us than different. I have met at least one trans-women who is more traditionally fem than me. (almost too much) like she basically only wears dresses/skirts, and heels. Constantly on point makeup and hair. She was really well off though. Like most of her shit was way nicer than mine. I never go in for brand names purses and junk like that though. My gf and I pretty much thrift for most of our clothes outside of Christmas time.

Even physical stuff aside she just carries her self super fem.

I have also met a trans women that were a lot harder to tell apart from men/butch folks. I think in most cases there is just such a knowledge gap from lived experiences and things their moms/female friends never taught them, it makes them seem more alien than they are.

Lets get real about this. How many of the people on this board really use women's shelters/spaces on the regular? We can agree we represent a bigger population than the trans people. In any given area (non major city) you might have like 3 trans women. They won't be spending every waking moment there.
