Girls tended to be very disapproving of me, but my parents were largely as accepting as they could be and boys accepted me as an "honorary boy" buddy of theirs up until puberty.

I suppose the girls giving me crap fits some theory that I flipped to identifying as a boy because I couldn't do the GNC things I liked as a girl. But I just don't find that a convincing argument. I clearly remember thinking of myself as a boy as a toddler, and I don't really even remember caring much about the gendered aspects of play. I kinda went along with whatever then, and would play house or with trucks or whatever anyone handed me. Didn't care.

I started saying, "I'm a boy" and asking to be called by a boy's name around 6-7, but I don't remember the worst shit from girls starting until about 8-9, when they first started to get concerned about things like nail polish and "perverts" being interested in them. (That was also the age that I got my hair in a boy's cut and started wearing boy's clothes exclusively, which I think was a big catalyst for the worst reactions from girls.) That was when they first started to really tell me they'd detected something freakishly wrong with me and reject me.

I don't see what's so wrong with letting kids do what they want during childhood, putting them on blockers until they're old enough to know what they want, and then letting them choose.
