The point of Kanji's character arc isn't that he's gay, ya dumb idiot. If anything, he's most likely bi. His whole deal was that people gave him shit for liking girly stuff growing up, so he was incredibly insecure in his masculinity and turned to acting like the most macho tuff guy possible to cope. Shadows are a complete overexaggeration of each character's repressed traits, so Kanji's shadow being a turbohomo was an exaggerated conclusion of his obsessive forced masculinity.

If Kanji is literally gay and Naoto is literally trans, then Chie is literally a violently sadistic dominatrix, Yukiko is literally a bratty princess, and Yosuke literally wants to destroy every single thing in the world just for fun. They're all exaggerated caricatures.

That said, Yosuke is totally so far in the closet that he's practically living in Narnia.

I didn't like the way it was revealed in the book though. "Oh by the way did I mention I'm gay?"
It wasn't built up nor did it have any effect later, it really doesn't add anything to Stephen's personality, it's dropped far too late to matter, and the scene adds NOTHING to the story whatsoever.
It's a great example on how to not handle the subject, although to be fair it's nowhere close to a "Bobby you're gay"-tier moment.

Yeah, it was just implied in the books. My ex didn't pick up on that at all when he read them, and he was baffled when I said something about Renly being into dudes. In the show, it felt like the producers or whoever were like, hey, let's throw in Renly fucking a guy because all the girls on Tumblr will go crazy over it.
