Can we have a thread about LGBT characters in media? I'll start with my personal favorite.
Inb4 Retards "kanji isn't gay"
Even if in the Japanese version kanji is less sexually ambiguous and his voice actor himself said kanji was gay
Atlus were such pussies.
>introduce gay guy
>make his dungeon some gay bathhouse rave
>"Nevermind, the guy he likes is actually a reverse trap and he's not gay, just afraid of rejection."
>literally wants a sex change and nearly gets one
>"Oh wait, on second thought she's just a girl struggling with gender roles."
it's a shame given that you could have a gay option in persona 2 innocent sin (pic related of the mc, best bi)
The point of Kanji's character arc isn't that he's gay, ya dumb idiot. If anything, he's most likely bi. His whole deal was that people gave him shit for liking girly stuff growing up, so he was incredibly insecure in his masculinity and turned to acting like the most macho tuff guy possible to cope. Shadows are a complete overexaggeration of each character's repressed traits, so Kanji's shadow being a turbohomo was an exaggerated conclusion of his obsessive forced masculinity.
If Kanji is literally gay and Naoto is literally trans, then Chie is literally a violently sadistic dominatrix, Yukiko is literally a bratty princess, and Yosuke literally wants to destroy every single thing in the world just for fun. They're all exaggerated caricatures.
That said, Yosuke is totally so far in the closet that he's practically living in Narnia.
I like this asshole over here.
He sucks in the movie though, who ever thought it was a good idea to ever cast Macaulay Culkin's brother? kek
I like the gay characters that are too bizarre to be labeled. Why can't special snowflakes be cool people in real life?
I was kinda pissed they they never mentioned Stephen's sexuality in the movie he was basically straight but hey we can't have everything right?
I didn't like the way it was revealed in the book though. "Oh by the way did I mention I'm gay?"
It wasn't built up nor did it have any effect later, it really doesn't add anything to Stephen's personality, it's dropped far too late to matter, and the scene adds NOTHING to the story whatsoever.
It's a great example on how to not handle the subject, although to be fair it's nowhere close to a "Bobby you're gay"-tier moment.
Breaking gender roles for straight people takes precedent over having some token gay in media. You would rather perpetuate the stereotype that all men that like girly things are gay? That's far more harmful to you.
I thought that was kind of cute and clever. It did have buildup though, if you go back there's definitely some sexual tension.
Plus it was another "the world doesn't revolve around you, Scott" moment
He's pretty femboi at least
>Bravery determines what you can wear
>Feminine clothes have a high bravery
>Joshuas bravery is the 2nd highesr after Shiki, a female, so he can wear some female clothes from the start
>one area barrier requires that you make him wear clothes from a mostly female brand to pass
And then the Post game scenario had this moment:
Ultimately it's just generic anime teases.
>It wasn't built up nor did it have any effect later
why should it?
>it really doesn't add anything to Stephen's personality
Why should being gay add something to your personality? The worst kind of gays are the ones who makes their homosex part of their character and identity
>and the scene adds NOTHING to the story whatsoever
I read that shit a long time ago but I don't remember it taking up that much time
>It's a great example on how to not handle the subject,
It's the perfect handling of a gay character because nobody gives a shit and it doesn't matter besides prefacing him kissing dudes. He's not "the gay guy" he's a guy who happens to be gay which is always how I describe myself and how I'd like to see fags handled in the future.
Not that anon but
>Called Roy G. Biv in the special chapter Another Day
>Steals the color pink (in their super sentai group) from Shiki
>(about Joshua) "If he sees a hole he knows how to fill it"
>"But above all I want to stay with you" also in the bonus chapter with Shiki and Beat thinking Joshua and Neku are gay for each other
The developers are well aware of what they did.
Detective Julien Lowe on The Shield is a very well-written gay character. He's religious, black and tries his hardest to suppress his gayness
Also the actor is currently awaiting trial on charges that he murdered his wife
Tobias Beecher and Chris Keller from Oz an unlikely, unstable, and unhealthy duo but I love them since they are actual characters not the same cut and copy shit with most "not straight" male characters
not sure if he was actually gay in the books or not, but they didn't leave a shred of ambiguity about it on the show
Yeah, it was just implied in the books. My ex didn't pick up on that at all when he read them, and he was baffled when I said something about Renly being into dudes. In the show, it felt like the producers or whoever were like, hey, let's throw in Renly fucking a guy because all the girls on Tumblr will go crazy over it.
I thought the actor was pretty cute, though.
Olyvar is my GoT husbando (even though he's a one-dimensional token character)
