It's for the blank shredder adapter. The wooden bullets of the blanks can be dangerous, so they attached a device on the end of the barrel that shredded them to pieces.

Yeah. Scopes are essential. I just drilled my first STG 44. Gonna load it with ratshot for dove season. Anyone else done that one? Hard to know where to drill lol.
Finally picked up my M95 carbine today, and the condition is both better and worse than I expected. It's completely missing the ejector and the rear ladder sight is broken somewhat, not to mention the handguard is missing the left side wing that goes around the rear sight, but the stock is in much better condition than I expected and the metal looks great. I don't know exactly how to feel. It was labeled as an incomplete rifle for somebody to piece back together, but the only missing parts listed were a few screws and the front sight. On the bright side, even with the new parts I have to order the whole project should only cost me around $250 to somewhat bring a rifle back from the dead, so I don't completely mind it.
Also, is the trigger supposed to be wobbly? Whenever I have the bolt out, the trigger likes to wobble back and forth, more than it probably should.

Fascinating. I always though the holes were for a side-mounted scope mount, but the holes in the rifle in your link are almost the exact same as mine. What's strange is that the stock on my Chilean is the only part that isn't matching. Now I have to wonder if this rifle was displayed, or the rifle that went with the stock? There is good story potential in this.
Evening, lads. I've probably been seen here before asking about Garands and the CMP. Im currently in a situation where I have close to everything I need, save for the GCA membership card which is still processing and has been since the second of this month. Along with that, I need at least one RO to fill out and sign a CMP marksmanship form(whilst I demonstrate familiarity with firearm safety and operation), because none of the other options are available to me. Otherwise, I have to wait til the end of the month and apply for a CCL on my 21st birthday, or wait til the second of October and do this with a certain Sawgrass shooting club that holds monthly matches at a range I frequent. Issue is I've tried two outdoor ranges so far and at both the RO's refused to do this with me. In addition, given the current nature of milsurp, the last thing I want is for the CMP to run out of Garands (again) before I'm even ready to order. Can anyone give me some advice regarding this? It's all so upsetting.

Got myself a post war Czech Brno made K98k last week. Numbers matching, and came with original sling. Paid 450€ for it. It's in excellent condition and I can't wait to take it to the range. I also got myself a Spanish made German pattern bayonet for it, it was cheap and is in good condition. It feels pretty cool knowing my grandfather most likely carried one of these back in WWII.

>Watching like a French Hawk

>>35086915
Yeah, it is a very nice looking rifle, I'm really happy with it.
They're basically just K98ks made from leftover WWII and new manufacture parts after the war. Besides the markings they're identical to German/Wartime K98ks. The markings don't really as much value here as in the US, for a really nice original one sure, but if it's worn and looks like shit not even the markings drive up the price. I had this one evaluated by a gun store guy I know. He says it's a fantastic buy and a very good deal, especially for the condition it's in. To put things in perspective, the nice German/marked ones cost 600€ and up if you're lucky, usually more.
I'm Austrian, our gun laws are actually pretty chill. Basically anything not self loading over a certain length falls under Cat. C&D and those can be bought at 18 requiring you only to register the gun. For Self loaders and handguns you require a Cat. B license but it's not that hard to get. Can only have two guns on it, but after five years you can extend it. Stupid thing though, all self loaders are considered war material unless exempted by model so the variety is quite limited. We can get AUGs ofc., some AR15s, an SG550 variant, and some civilian self loaders. You can get pretty much any handgun though. No pump action shotguns though, our politicians had a brain fart sometime in the 90s with those, they're now considered war material. Pump action rifles are fine though, go figure.

BR(N)O-fist back. That's a nice one! I could have snatched a german G98 a few months back but those 400m min. sights are useless here. Our ranges in Austria are usually 100m. The biggest one here has 300m, but it's reservation only from what I can tell.
Do you have a range where you can shoot it at ~400m?
>>35087097
>>35087110
>Do you have a range where you can shoot it at ~400m?
No, my gun club range only goes to 200 yards. 400m zero works fine at 50 yards using S-Patrone. Shooting at 100 and 200 is a bit of a challenge because of the hold-under.
>aim at dick
>hit target in face
Red is Turkish surplus, which is a copy of the original German 1905 S-Patrone which fires 154gr @2936fps; green is Israeli surplus which is 170gr @~2500fps.
But when you look this good, you don't have to hit ANYTHING.

Ah I see, yeah I don't want to deal with hold-under, that's why I got the K98k. Even my M48A is annoying with the 200m zero at 100m, can't imagine a 400m zero. At least for target shooting. Combat was probably fine.
>German shoots at floor in front of a Frenchie.
>Frenchie falls over, dick disintegrated

There's not really much surplus ammo around in Austria. I use 196grs S&B FMJs. Don't know the rest of the specs right now. A 50 pack costs 45€, pretty much the least expensive. They shoot pretty well out the M48A. Haven't tested them in the K98k yet. Can't wait for the weekend. Saturday is range day.

you can do the conversion yourself with a dremel, drill, RCBS decapping pin, and chunk of aluminium. the reloading set up is tricky.
-buy 8mm lebel brass and lee 41 swiss reloading dies.
-run the brass through the depriming die with the decapping pin removed
-cut off the neck and chamfer it
-anneal the case neck
-prime with LR primer
-load with 12gr unique
-take up the rest of the space with cream of wheat
-cap with melted wax
-fire this through the rifle (it's loud)
-clean the brass
-trim to final length (1.585")
-fill with 45gr FFFG black powder
-fill the empty space with cream of wheat
-cap with a .44cal cardboard wad level with the case mouth, this way the seating will compress your powder slightly.
-lee seating die is asshole so I use a semi-jank set up on my RCBS (pic) with a 44 cal seating die
-I'm using a 252gr kieth .429 projectile, slug your bore and chose a projectile that's one or two thousandths oversized. chose a projectile that doesn't have a gas check recess or else the bullet won't seat well.
-seat depth of exactly 2.200" or else it won't feed reliably from the magazine
-remove everything from the seating die and use it to crimp the finished cartridge.
-once you've fired the cartridges put them in boiling water and add oxyclean as soon as you can, it removes almost all of the powder fouling and will make your brass last longer
Buffalo arms makes a proper 300grain bullet mold but it's been out of stock forever. I've filmed everything for a how to reload the 41 swiss video but I never bothered throwing it all together and putting it up.
ignore the fact that the bullets are paper patched in the picture, it didn't work well.

Some say to just pour some warm water down the barrel and gas system to neutralize the salts then clean as normal. Some say you need to do the whole guns and the bolt. Do I even need to use water? Is CLP not good enough?
>>35094744
You did ya goober.
>>35095077
Fuck water. Just take out the bolt and bolt carrier, main spring and gas tube, piston, secondary piston and spring. Brake clean them and wipe them down and re oil as you normally would. Do the same to the chamber and barrel and run a snake through.
If you just shot a little then only bother with the bolt and snake it. Imo

Why do people say you can shoot .308 in a military bolt action but shooting 7.62 NATO in a commercial could kaboom?
Same fucking reason people say don't use .308 in a 7.62 CETME. You're just gambling.
>>35099366
You bought one to make me jelly?
And FYI, the receiver tang on true CR39s are square, while all other Mle 1936s are circular. It's a good way to know fakes. Of course, all CR39s should have an F prefix too.
>>35099542
>Why do people say you can shoot .308 in a military bolt action but shooting 7.62 NATO in a commercial could kaboom?
You have it backwards, actually.
>Same fucking reason people say don't use .308 in a 7.62 CETME. You're just gambling.
All of the rifles were in 7.62NATO, not 7.62CETME. Furthermore, 7.62CETME is a lower recoiling round, not a lower pressure round.
>>35099542
>>35099575
This is from the manual. 7.62CETME has virtually identical pressure of 7.62NATO. If you read what Santa Barbara arsenal (the ammunition plant) says they are the same pressure.
>>35099575
so its fine then, so long as i shoot Real effin NATO, but not .308?
>>35099606
No, you can shoot both .308 and 7.62NATO. The retards who claimed that .308 is wildly higher pressures are idiots. They just read the wiki page and assumed that the two measurements are somehow interchangeable, but they are not. The measurement for .308 used a modern piezoelectric sensor to record pressure, while the 7.62NATO measurement was the much older method of a crushed copper disk. The Wiki article for 7.62NATO has been updated, yet idiots keep spreading this myth.
>>35099627
That's a relief. I was afraid I'd bought something dangerous to fire
Posting my 1928 Tula. Since it was made in 1928, does that mean it's an M91 instead of an M91/30? I've also heard the term ex dragoon tossed around with Mosins made in the 1920's. How can you tell if it is one?
>>35099753
It's an ex-dragoon. They turned a dragoon into a M91/30.

>Since it was made in 1928, does that mean it's an M91 instead of an M91/30? I've also heard the term ex dragoon tossed around with Mosins made in the 1920's.
M91 infantry-length rifle production ceased entirely in 1926. M91 infantry rifles are longer than M91 Dragoon-length rifles. Your rifle was originally built as an M91 Dragoon. Sometime after the Model 91/30 rifle was introduced your rifle was updated with the new M30 front and rear sights, effectively making it M91/30 configuration rather than its original Dragoon configuration.

What's the point? When your house gets blown down that often do you really want to have to carry all the bits up out of a hole, too?
>>35100122
Why not both?
These two slings look familiar? They're carbine length, and just closure studs on both sides. though one side has 6 or so extra holes.
I think i bought them for carcanos, but i can't find any reasoning behind that. The only mark they have is a BK in a circle, which is a Yugoslavian acceptance mark (assuming someone else didn't also use it).

That poor long rifle.
>>35100335
yes. they are very nice rifles. smoothest of all the bolt actions aside from the Ross IMHO.
however the carbines have a lot of jump at the muzzle when fired, so obviously they are not as accurate as the long rifles -- however they do shoot very, very straight and the rounds seem to have a very flat trajectory. I only have limited experience shooting mine though.

What's the best vintage for a Carcano?
>>35100335
Almost all the WW2 bolt rifles were 19th century rifles. The only exception are the Mas 36 and the 1903a3. The Dutch rifles are capable, though they do have some flaws.
>>35101264
>smoothest of all the bolt actions aside from the Ross IMHO.
I think you're forgetting another rifle...
>>35101336
Up until 1915 they used walnut stocks and they seem to be less slapdash. Generally anything pre WW1 that doesn't have huge condition issues. That being said the Carcano from the beginning is pretty well optimized for production and only goes through some minor mechanical changes so you get fairly consistently built guns.
>>35101340
Depends, the Type 38 was wildly redesigned from the Type 30, you could argue it's a new gun.
>>35101340
Nope. Didn't forget. Dutchies and Rosses are smoother.
>>35101379
Oh yeah, I did forget about those.

Do people here like their surp in mint condition, or ones that have some wear and character?
>>35102048
I can't afford and don't REALLY want museum pieces. All my 'surp shows use to some degree, some of it would probably go as low as "fair" but I still like them.
>>35102048
Wear means it's used, give me a rifle with some character. As long as it's still in good shootable condition.
>>35102048
slightly attractive beaters are my preference t.bh
>>35102048
I can't do mint guns. They just seem so fake, and almost a shame to shoot. I try and get very-good but I have a soft spot for the neglected.
>>35102048
Both. But I prefer rougher condition guns as shooters.
Also the guns that are beat to shit are the ones that were actually used in battle, more often than not. So they're more interesting to me historically.
>>35102048
It depends on what kind it is. Is it a standard 91/30? I'd prefer like new or minty if possible. My Mas? Beat is fine especially since it's sexy regardless of wear. Honestly as long as it's not pitted or rusted and the stock is sound I'm fine
>>35101306
desu I know nearly nothing about them and watched Othais' video on it after buying it. I also love mausers and ones that I can actually shoot.
>>35102048
Mint condition is nice, but not essential. I shoot them either way though.
It's not too late to post food is it?

>>35102048
I prefer really good condition wood, but pristine bluing is generally a turn-off. My Turkish 1903/30 has my favorite combo, great wood with worn metal.

>>35102048
I like it to be worn but still in a good serviceable condition. I think bluing fading and some wear in the stock is pretty cool looking.
However I'm not too happy that the oils in my one rifle's stock have really oxidized. I've heard a wet cloth of kerosene can wipe it down and bring back the true colors but I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not. I really don't want to fuck with my rifle and leave it with no oil at all and make the wood vulnerable and I definitely don't want to put a new coat of oil on it.
Is there a cheat sheet as to proper sight picture with the various sights and rifles?
I'm terrible at milsurp shooting, I'm probably over thinking it but the V notch with a Blade doesn't line up very well, Barleycorns just seem weird, I've heard some rifles are supposed to burry the front sight into the bottom of the V and other nations taught them to just aim for their dick.
