This mosin recently went up for auction.
1942 Izhevsk. Nothing special about it.

Guess the hammer price.

Pretty close. $258.75 (including the Auction House Premium)
I'd bet if you include shipping or tax or transfer, you'd probably hit 300.

It's unfortunate, but I use it now to try to warn other Stop owners about the inherent dangers of taking it down

Well, you have to disconnect the guide rod from the bolt carrier in order to pull the barrel and bolt out

Just be careful when putting pressure on the guide rod and twisting it. What I do now is cupping my other hand over the front of the gun when pushing and twisting the screw part of the guide rod
>>
>>34984913
Does anyone here know if those silicone gun socks really work?
I have a M1917 that keeps getting mold all over the wood and I'm afraid it will lead to rust.
>>
>>34986158
You need to kill the mold first or else it will keep coming back no matter what you put the gun in.
>>
>>34986227
Is there a good way to do that without ruining the wood?
>>
>>34986127
I thought you meant when taking the guide rod out. I dunno I'm confused. When I push the guide rod and twist, I usually am careful, I just don't know what I would be scratching. I appreciate the advice though
>>
>>34986158
>>34986265
get a cedar chest or a good dehumidifier for your safe. silicone socks are okay, but not good enough alone.

for the mold, it depends on the type of mold, but find a non-aggressive soap like dawn or maybe some rubbing alcohol and soak a rag in it and hit it with that. clean it off and then spritz it with some remoil and put it up.

shouldnt have anymore issues.
>>
>>34986361
I usually am too, but I pushed down too hard and to the side that I ended up slipping off of the slot on the guide rod and slid down the side of my gun. Just me being a fucking idiot

Sup lads I have an unusual German pistol that I think is from WW1 (the one with the really swept back grip) and it has a ridiculously long barrel. I love it but I also really wanna conceal carry it. I'm probably gonna chop the barrel to around two inches and make a clean little snubby out of it. What do y'all think? Would that be cool?

lol some knucklehead fudd put a "remington" engraving on a stupid mosin, i guess nobody told him it was a russian ww11 gun. anyway the boomer wanted like $350 for it but i got it for $300, did i do alright lads? why do these hunter fags have to put "buckmark" and "remington" stickers and engravings on goddamn everything? since the historical value was destroyed with the custom retard boomer engraving i decided to try and see if i could use it for gunsmithing practice and tune it up a bit and make it a bench rifle, what do you guys think? hitting about 1.5 moa with wolf gold brass now, polished the trigger and cut a coil off the spring and it breaks about 2.5#, had gunsmith install muzzle brake too. stock is cut from 16 gauge sheet steel and bolted with allen head bolts, put a spring in the chasis behind the receiver to help absorb recoil. i went bullpup because loltactical. its quickly becoming my fav to take out to the range

I don't think it's refinished, I think it's just some NOS Lithgow wood that JJCO put on some rifles they bought. That's not always a good thing though as the Coachwood needs the copper recoil plates to prevent cracking, and most of those NOS stocks did not have them installed.

Fun fact: there were a very small number of Chilean M1935 short rifles fitted with 10-round fixed box magazines. When and where the work was done is unknown, however this 10-round fixed box magazine strongly resembles one included in Paul Mauser's designs of the Model 1893 as a possible option for expanding magazine size, but as far as is known no other country ever expressed interest in the expanded magazine.

They're of limited utility as the mounting system is tenuous and can't take a lot of stress. The Chilean one is just the standard milled 5rd internal magazine extruded downward to double capacity; it uses the standard M98 floorplate.

I'm trying to buy an old milsurp rifle off my old man. A 1909 Argentine Mauser cavalry carbine in 7.65x53mm built by DWM. I love that gun, it was one of the first guns I ever shot when I was a kid. It has an incredibly smooth action and it even has the argentine crest intact (most of them had the crest ground off before export). Finding ammo for it is a bitch but I'm told you can trim down 30-06 brass and load it with .303 bullets so maybe I just need to start hand loading.

I was lucky to buy mine for $300, but it came with 440 rounds of ammo, so I paid around $150 for the rifle itself. It was only two years ago, so maybe i caught it just before the prices exploded.

I personally got a post war refurb 1926 converted Dragoon from a local shop for 300. Had fairly minimal cosmoline too. Though I still need to sweat out the stock. Rifling is immaculate and shoots pretty well. Just need to get used to a 100 meter zero.

Mine is a '43 Izzy. The guy I bought it from didn't shoot it that much, he said, and the bore and rifle in general was in pretty good condition. Maybe $150 was still too much for a 91/30, but it was my first rifle, and I loved, and still love, it.

You May end up paying more for matching, just so you know. Pre-armistice rifles aren't common.

>>34991298
Being a refurb it doesn't have true matching parts. But all the parts aside from the trigger spring and mag are Tula. Spring is Izzy and mag is Remington or Westinghouse. Which just makes it that much more awesome. The mag that is.

You're not fixing that barrel. no matter how good your welding skills are. The bolt face might be really fucked also. Sometimes its simply welded shut, but usually the European demils are milled off at an angle.

Seems like a good deal until you factor in having to find a new long barrel, a new bolt (and all the fitment issues they have) and knowing you will always have a mismatched rifle.
>>
>>34991968

There's also the possibility that it was demilled for functional reasons, something ELSE was wrong with it and they decided it wasn't worth it to fix.

Wasn't until I got home that I noticed the CAI and 308 stamping. I was sad until to disassembled the thing and saw that it wasn't a Century chop job on the barrel but a brand new barrel put on it.
It's a fun shooter, works with USGI stripper clips and shoots about 4 inch groups at 100yards from a leadsled

I think I had $11.9k in all of that (including the 2 scopes/mounts, 2 extra mags, extra parts, shooters kits and M41 bayonet - not pictured)

I love them all, but honestly I am thinking about selling/trading one of the G43s. They are too fucking fragile and I want at least one of them to be a shooter, but I dont want to break the gun or my face.

Even with the shooters kits and my extra light loads they still wont pass the tape test. I can close off the gas port (and sometimes do) and use them as bolt actions - but its not as fun.

Every time I take one out to put on consignment, I play with it for a minute and end up putting it back in the safe.

As the other anon says it would depend on the collector, but I can guarantee that it won't hurt. Personally I would cream my pants if I got capture papers with a gun.

My MAS 36 >>34992721 is a Vietnam bringback, but no papers. So it was made in France, sent to Vietnam as part of the colonial efforts, then captured by Charlie, then captures by an American and brought back. If I had paperwork for that story I'd probably masturbate to it daily.

I'm going to try and return it tomorrow, I don't see any problem given that it's chambered for another round than advertised and has some safety issues. I highly doubt yours is a Vietnam bringback. Yours doesn't really have the Vietnam look to it, and it's a 36/51. The ones in Vietnam would have all been LG-48s.

Furthermore, going from the sticky on gunboards, your rifle (yes I know the SN from the gunbroker auction) was made in in December of 1954 or January of 1955.

hey mosin experts, what should I look for in a Mosin? Why is a hex mosin supposedly better, and is that true? Thanks for the help guys.
>>
>>34995060
Sounds like your firing pin was under a lot more spring tension than it should have been.
>>
>>34995069
Hex receivers are stronger built do to the shape and quality of the steel used. Round receivers are made during war time when speed goes over quality. Also the earlier the date on a mosin, the more valuable it is. Otherwise, just find yourself something that looks good and isn't overly expensive
>>
>>34994696
Lebel won't stack with the shorties.
>>
>>34995097
Are hex mosins any more accurate or better quality (aside from what you said)?
>>
>>34995176
Well, I pretty much stated they're of better quality. More work put in and a more refined steel. I don't remember if they're supposed to be anymore accurate, but I think it's a yes because it possibly holds the rifling at the start of the barrel for longer. Meaning even if you don't have a rebored rifle you have a better chance at having stronger rifling.
>>
>>34995196
Correct me if I'm wrong though, anyone that knows better.

The change to round recievers happened well before the war, 1936. There is no difference between them otherwise. Hex Mosins are simply more rare because fewer were produced. The biggest distinctions in quality are between pre war and war time guns.

So it turns out my Type 38 is actually one of the less uncommon Type 38's from Nagoya sent to Thailand under the designation of Type 83 in 1940 to assist them in the Franco-Thai war. It's a 27th series which was one of the series sent and has zeroes stamped around the mum indicating it was removed from Japanese service. On one hand I'm disappointed it didn't see use in the Japanese military, but on the other it may have removed frogs which is cool and I know it's story now.

Mosins aren't that bad as long as you know what to inspect for. They have commie quality control, but are a decent design. Just make sure the bore is good, the bolt face doesn't have burs, the extractor isn't warped sideways, and the rest of it is in good shape. If you take a 20 gauge borebrush and some hoppes on a drill on slow you can scrub the chamber of cosmoline. Also heavier loads tend to help in causing sticky bolt, so stick to moderate stuff. Finn mosins are usually a bit smoother if you really wanna see what they can do.

Do it. Last week I bought the 38 on the bottom and it was covered in some horrid glossy brown paint. Slathered it in some citristrip and let it sit an hour and it scraped off, then rubbed on some linseed oil. The Type 99 and 44 I just bought. $600 for the pair, with the 99 being an all matching Tokyo Juki Kogyo.

I could buy both of those off liberty tree right now for $335

That's MY ROSS. I'm buying it. I don't need anyone else knowing about it until I post my shitty pictures of it and give a fresh hot take on how it's better than the Mauser or something.

It does sound like something I'd say.

My experience with Arisakas is sorta low, I think I've maybe seen one in person in my whole life. I think I can swing this deal, is there anything I should know going in (stripping, manufacturer, and manufacture date. I know the 'mum's gone already)?

I recommend McCollum's book. Not super in depth but more than enough for a beginner. Talks about the marker and most other markings. As for stripping, take the wood to hardware or paint store and the paint folks what they recommend. I work at an ACE and did just that.

Did you get your bayonet stuck on fuckoff backwards and crusted in cosmoline too?
>>
>>35003102
That's in USD, I think I made the point that I was talking in CAD.
>>
>>35004283
The cosmoline wasn't actually the issue with the bayonet. Whomever shoved the thing on REALLY got it on there. Took me a friend, a hammer (and paper towels to protect the wood), penetrating oil and a lot of brute force over the course of about 45 minutes.
