Declare your firearms when you go to check your bag. You will have to show the ticket lady that they are unloaded (simply open case and say it's unloaded). They put a orange card that says its unloaded in the case.

Then you go to the TSA room and they do the same thing (open case and look). Case stays with TSA after this and you board flight.

Case needs to be padlocked in every spot a lock can go.

Handguns can be in a suitcase but they still need to be padlocked, I also put a padlock on my suitcase.

When you land you pick up your cases from the specialty baggage room of whatever airline you flew with.

Is this the place for recommendations? I'm looking for an AR now, but I'm not sure which way I want to go. My local shop has an HK-416 civilian model and I've wanted one of those forever, but the guy in the shop said "it's pretty heavy, try the SCAR", and I did but it feels almost too light and I've never fired one or seen one fired, whereas I have fired M16s and M4s and such. I feel like the 416's weight would actually make it more stable for shooting and more rugged for going into the woods with it.
What does /k/ think? 416? SCAR? or something cheaper like the Colt or Springfield?

Don't get a scar then, that would be most of your budget. I'd recommend a basic AR and then spend some $$$ on optic, laser, and eventually NODs. You can build a tier 1 AR with that kind of money.
