tl;dr: Long hard school, to do shitty work, and the job prospects are a lie.

Which branch are you enlisting/enlisted/considering?

Does training count towards your contract length? Like, if I had a contract for three years, and I went to the DLI for 62 weeks to learn Chinese, would I only have 2 years left on my contract?
>>
I signed up for the marines and i'm in the DEP, but the MOS I want isn't currently available and there's no guarantee it'll be available by the time i'm set to ship out.

Is there any way I can actually delay my ship date if by the time I ship the MOS I want still isn't available?
>>
>>34557371
Yes, training time does count, but there's a catch. Jobs with long schools will generally require you to sign for 6 years.
>>
>>34557383
The DEP is pretty meaningless, you aren't legally required to ship at all.

Tell your recruiter ASAP that you won't ship without that MOS otherwise they'll get pissed and make life difficult for when you back out a week before your ship date.

1. It cramped and every position is lots of fun
2. Having upper body strength helps, but after you are a loader you gain it fast
3. Nobody except for SOF and pilots deploys anymore
4. Won't learn anything for when you leave the military, but you can use the GI bill if you want

>speaks to young men looking to prove themselves

People in the thread speak out against the marines because they get the harder shittier more likely to die jobs with worse equipment and bases etc. (at least I think that's why mainly).
17-19yr olds basically hear that the marines are the hardest baddest fuckers and do all the ass kicking and so they can't imagine its worth joining anything else because joining something else would be pussy as fuck.
The PRO isn't entirely true, but nobody comes to the thread and says "all i want is to be a badass and kill people" so join the marines is never the right answer.

Took the asvab a week ago and did fairly well, 87 afqt , 120+ line scores

If you dont have much time to study definitely bone up in math and vocabulary.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0brxMViHuk&t=2s [Embed]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLHEJWe_0kI&t=14643s [Embed]

these are pretty good, the majority is not on the test but its good to get used to the subject matter (formulas, Orders of operations, variables, fractions etc. )

some anon posted a thread ( Thanks man ) with this practice website that had me learn a few new problems that were on the test to my relief.

http://asvabpracticetestonline.com/

If you have more time to prepare , delve into the other subjects more deeply. In my opinion the ASVAB for dummies book ( though I didnt use that book specifically ) is worth the money seeing as it will aid a score that will determine what you are going to do for the next 4+ years of your life.

Any special forces stuff I suppose but honestly being an AST or surf man in the coast guard is pretty bad. Blown out disks tweaked knees the list goes on plus you have to live with the fact that there are people you couldn't save and possibly died in your arms or looked you in the eyes as they breath their last breaths it ain't easy shit man
>>
>>34560346
honestly it pretty much general stuff that most people should know.

Example:

How many bones in the human body?

which is a single celled organism?

what degree Celsius does water freeze?

The asvab practice test website gives good examples and some of the questions were on the actual asvab but worded differently.

but to answer your question, not very important . focus on math and vocabulary.Again the practice asvab website gives great examples of whats on the test especially the Math part. If there is a type of problem you don't know how to do, learn it along with similar problems

Marines have better uniforms and the best hats. Marines also get to bang trashiest of the trash bar chicks while the Army usually has more depandas. They also get the worst equipment and many of their mechanics can't do their jerbs. The physical PT for marines is about 1/3rd more than the Army, if you enjoy sweating your balls off than it's a good choice. Marine Corps has a limited amount of bases, want to go to Europe? Bahaha ayylmao maybe you can get lucky and train with the Royal Marines for a deployment on a socialist little rainy island filled with kebabs.

Main perk of joining the Marines is having a funeral were other Marines dressed in flashy uniforms carry your casket, so you can go out in style before you are 6 feet under.

Now each of us from time to time has gazed upon the sea
and watched the mighty warships pulling out to keep this country free.
And most of us have read a book or heard a lusty tale,
about these men who sail these ships through lightning, wind and hail.
But there's a place within each ship that legend's fail to teach.
It's down below the water-line and it takes a living toll
- - a hot metal living hell, that sailors call the "Hole."
It houses engines run with steam that makes the shafts go round.
A place of fire, noise, and heat that beats your spirits down.
Where boilers like a hellish heart, with blood of angry steam,
are molded gods without remorse, are nightmares in a dream.

Whose threat from the fires roar, is like a living doubt,
that at any moment with such scorn, might escape and crush you out.
Where turbines scream like tortured souls, alone and lost in Hell,
are ordered from above somewhere, they answer every bell.
The men who keep the fires lit and make the engines run,
are strangers to the light and rarely see the sun.
They have no time for man or God, no tolerance for fear,
their aspect pays no living thing a tribute of a tear.
For there's not much that men can do that these men haven't done,
beneath the decks, deep in the hole, to make the engines run.
And every hour of every day they keep the watch in Hell,
for if the fires ever fail their ship's a useless shell.
>>
>>34562998
>>34563116

When ships converge to have a war upon an angry sea,
the men below just grimly smile at what their fate will be.
They're locked below like men fore-doomed, who hear no battle cry,
it's well assumed that if they're hit men below will die.
For every day's a war down there when gauges all read red,
twelve-hundred pounds of heated steam can kill you mighty dead.

So if you ever write their songs or try to tell their tale,
the very words would make you hear a fired furnace's wail.
And people as a general rule don't hear of these men of steel,
so little heard about this place that sailors call the "Hole."
But I can sing about this place and try to make you see,
the hardened life of the men down there, 'cause one of them is me.
I've seen these sweat-soaked heroes fight in superheated air,
to keep their ship alive and right, though no one knows they're there.

And thus they'll fight for ages on till warships sail no more,
amid the boiler's mighty heat and the turbine's hellish roar.
So when you see a ship pull out to meet a war-like foe,
remember faintly if you can, "The Men Who Sail Below."

I'm really torn between the Navy and the Marine Corps, and I don't know which I like more. I've never been a "dumb" person -- school has always come really easily to me, I like to learn, and I've always been very squared away and mentally capable (never done drugs, alcohol, smoked, eat very clean, work out 5 times a week at least) so I've been told by people that the Air Force and the Navy are the way to go if you've got 'brains.' This is amplified by the fact that I don't have any intention of going infantry.

But on the other hand, I really want to be able to do something that nobody in my family has done before (my father was a Corpsman) and to me, the pride of being able to say "I was a Marine" is really alluring. I'm also able to put up with a tremendous amount of bullshit, and because of that, I've always tried to challenge myself by taking the hardest path possible.

If any Sailors or Marines are present, would you be able to weigh in one way or another?
>>
>>34564922
> the pride of being able to say "I was a Marine" is really alluring
> This is amplified by the fact that I don't have any intention of going infantry

Maybe consider that the only people who aren't going to refer to you as an "army guy" (as in not knowing the difference between the Army and Marines, which is most civies) are going to be calling you a POG. Sounds like you are considering the wrong branch for all the wrong reasons.
>>
Anyone in the Navy ever submit a DAR? Did you get another rating while in DEP doing so?
>>
>>34564997
More pride for me than anything. I don't want to become motarded. As for the POG lifestyle, I'm totally okay with that.
>>
>>34564922

There's nothing hard about becoming a Marine. Boot camp has a 90% grad rate, higher if you actually want to be there.

It's not a title worth bragging about.
>>
>>34564922

>>
>>34564922
>MUH PRIDE
this is literally the only selling point of the marines. It's how they ripe in people under 20 who feel like they have something to prove.
Go navy or air force. Of you want something that will satisfy your ego while still requiring intelligence, try Air Force TACP or CCT.

Otherwise try for an Air Crew position, or in the navy go for OS, FC, ST, or CT
>>
>>34565078

Guess who gets to play with guns more?

Hint: It's not poorfuck Marines who have to spend 10 hours a day doing nothing.

The biggest gun nuts I've met outside SOF are all hardcore POGs who do a comfy 8 hour day job then use their extra money and free time to hit the range. The military rarely shoots and tends to make the experience shit.
>>
>>34565086
My only contention point with the Air Force is that they seemed like a much more laid back branch. I don't know if this necessarily correlates to a lack of discipline or what, but I just don't think I'd get the full military experience with them.

I like the Navy's heritage and tradition.

TACPs are a Combat role, and have the possibility to go SOF. Not an office job like 90% of the Air force. Air Crew is also loads of fun while also learning useful skills unless you are a loader.

If you prefer the navy and like guns, go GM
>>
>>34565142
I'm more of an ArmA man, myself.

Also isn't like 90% of the military a person other than grunt? I've got nothing against the Air Force, but I don't think it's a branch that's on the same wavelength as what I'm looking for.

Why would anyone join the Marines over the Army?
>>

I like being around Mexicans more than Blacks.

>>34567733
Army has more options, room for promotion, better equipment, and less retards.

Marines have more PT during boot camp and everybody under E-9 is a retard. They get a nice dress uniform though
The training for regular old infantry is the same outside of PT.

You could easily finish an AS in 4 years as a 3D1X2 or 3D0X2, and if you've got some drive to you, you can finish a BS in 6.
Don't enlist for 6, though, since you can always extend on your original contract, up to 8 years total.
FYI, all of your first year you will be doing training and won't really be able to do college classes.

This is USAF btw. Oh yeah, and the AF will pay out up to $4500 every fiscal year for tuition assistance.

Samefag from past threads about the counseling shit.

"Mood Disorders

Current mood disorders including, but not limited to, major depression (296.2–3), bipolar (296.4–7), affective psychoses (296.8–9), depressive not otherwise specified (311), are disqualifying.

History of mood disorders requiring outpatient care for longer than 6 months by a physician or other mental health professional (V65.40), or inpatient treatment in a hospital or residential facility is disqualifying.

History of symptoms consistent with a mood disorder of a repeated nature that impairs school, social, or work efficiency is disqualifying."

I saw a counselor on and off at randomish intervals for 4 years, and had one of those 'technical' Depression/Adjustment disorders for basically billing purposes on the paperwork. Wordage implied it didn't really hold meaning beyond billing, but still concerned if it comes up somehow, due to the shit I copypasted from above talking about requiring treatment for so long. All voluntary, and as much as like 6+ months between seeing this dude, just popped in when I had life issues to run through him or blow off steam about personal stuff.
>>
>>34568615
I always advocate signing for 4, so give that a shot as a 3D1X2 or 3D0X2 and you shouldn't have a problem finishing your BS.
After that, you'll be in a pretty good position to go civ, continue enlisted, or commission as a 17D/17S.

>>
>>34569118

1. They're not actually going to put a finger up there, just do a visual inspection for issues like hemorrhoids.

2. Either way, you should warm up to the idea of medical professionals touching your butt. That shit is going to happen eventually when you get checked for colon cancer when you're older.
>>

They don't probe your ass, they just visually inspect it to make sure you're not prolapsed or have hemorrhoids.

That's why you don't fuck with MEPS doctors.

as long as the recruiter hasn't sent the docs off to MEPS nothing is written in stone.

if you can get the documents from your doctor and it shows that you're not going to be a problem / it was a one time thing you should be fine.

If not I bet if you tell your recruiter you can't get in contact with your doctor to get documentation about that they will just tell you to re fill out the form without mentioning the migranes.
>>
>>34571316
Recruiter wants to get you in. Say you don't have it and forget you ever put it down and redo the paper. That packet will be discarded once you're done, it won't be scanned in or anything. The recruiter will input your info to the computer, at least mine did that.

You should get it taken care of before you go and get any and all documents related to your treatment for your medical records.

Has your recruiter submitted your paperwork to MEPS yet? If not, there's still hope. You can leave your recruiter and he'll likely rip that paperwork up. Then, you can join the navy and no one ever has to find out about your little "mishap."
If he has, then you're knee deep in shit and might as well ride this out to the end. Go back to that doc and tell him straight up you think everything he wrote was complete bullshit, you feel like 100% PERFECT with NOTHING WRONG PAST PRESENT FUTURE and ask for a second opinion from a doc who will basically write "After reviewing everything about anon, I have determined that much of what that other doc wrote was misheard and fucking 100% wrong. There's absolutely nothing fucking wrong with Anon because he is 100% perfect." Doc is not a bro. Is it extremely sensitive? That's pretty common. Testicles are designed to retract in cold temperature to keep the sperm warm and retract during certain physical activities to keep them from getting injured and retract during ejaculation. The exam rooms at MEPS are not cold, at least they weren't when I went through. Plus you have about 2 dozen other recruits going from station to station making the whole place moderate temperatured. Then right before the testicle exam you'll do all the flexibility tests with 2 dozen other guys in a room about the size or a classroom which will probably keep your body warm. Most if the guys are at least a little nervous raising all our body temperatures.

A few weeks ago I went to a Marine Corps recruiter just to see what the Corps would be able to offer. We spoke about my goals, plans for the future, what I wanted to do while in the service, and things of that nature. Before I left, he had me choose 3 things that I felt were most important out of a list of 12 or so, and to write down what I thought each meant.

Would anyone be able to tell me if the Marine Corps genuinely offers these opportunities? I'm trying to plan long-term, and to use the military as a stepping stone for when I eventually move on to other things.

Literally a non-issue. Audie fucking Murphy lied to get into the military. The whole "you have to be an angel" bullshit is just bullshit.

Truthfully, it's because they're able to visualize problems extremely well. I wouldn't be surprised if it was discovered that Nikola Tesla had Aspergers.
>>
>>34574664
It's because the military can afford to be selective right now, and the easiest way to filter people is through quantitative metrics like criminal record or drug use.
When the branches need to shed people, normally inconsequential shit like PT failures becomes career ending.

The ideal way to enlist/commission people would be through personal interviews where an agent/recruiter judges your character (think job interview), but the manpower requirements of such a program would be enormous.

Fair enough, let me walk back here. I wasn't necessarily calling you a shitpile for making "mistakes". Even though, mind you, there are other candidates - honest ones - who are penalized for telling the truth since you have an edge on them by lying. I was calling you a shitpile for lying, and now acting sanctimonious and entitled to a spot at OCS, even though they say you aren't qualified (depending on the nature of the offense).

Again, there are other people who were honest, and maybe, probably, lost the spot at OCS to you. Congratulations, but yeah fuck you. Wouldn't want you as my CO.

This seems like the only thread to post this in and I don't feel like this warrants making its own thread, so here we go.

I'm about to graduate college with a (useless, I know. I got jewed. Long story.) bachelors in Criminal Justice. I'm looking to get into law enforcement of any kind, local, state,or federal.

I know this is MEG, but what would be some advice to get into a good law enforcement career ? I've looked into the Coast Guard and getting into Maritime Policing, but I just don't know anymore. I thought about trying to be an MP but from what I have heard, that is the worst thing on the planet to do as far as the military goes.

Guys...I just want to shoot bad guys, and get some training so I can operate operationally.
>>
>>34575880

>>
>>34575905
I've thought about it, yes. My issue is...I need money if I'm going to go and start working. Do their internships pay? I actually didn't see anything about that.

The reason is, I'm young but have a family. If I'm going to go away to train/work...there needs to be some decent money involved.
>>
>>34575880

>>34575880
Capitol Police seem fairly easy to get accepted into and they have some decent career fields. I've been around a lot of the bodyguards, and their job is basically to travel the country and babysit some of the most powerful people in the world.

The only downside IIRC is you have to spend your first year doing stationary security (ie door watching).
>>

yes and no. You are an enlisted Agent still, but you just go straight to CID school from MP school. It isn't the civilian CID gig, but you can get into that later obviously. 5 year contract.
>>
>>34576020
I think I can have a 3.0 by the time I graduate. It was 2.8 or something last I checked. I have sort of slacked off in college as far as caring about my GPA, unfortunately.
>>
>>34576029
Ok my main question is, do I have to go to Army Basic or do I go straight to learning CID\?

I don't mind being enlisted and being counted as active duty. That's my confusion here though. Bootcamp or Bootcamp for CID?
>>
>>34576049
You do 31B OSUT, which is basic plus the MP school in one go. It's like 17 weeks I think, I've heard 20 total with in and out processing so I'm not sure.

From there, you intern with a CID unit while waiting for CIDSAC to start, but the wait isn't that long. CIDSAC is 5 months.

After that you are a CID agent. Wear civis, segregated from the Army mostly, and get BAH and BAS as a single soldier which is nice.

I legit forgot I was flatfooted and saw a podiatrist about it like twice, but of course they thought I was sketch as fuck simply for that.

Literally every goddamn time I try to post on Meg to ask for help I get fucking ignored. I've been helped a total of one times. Fucking retards

Newfag here im a freshman im college and ive been thinking about doing SMP and rotc im stuck on deciding an MOS. Im leaning more towards 68w does anyone here have experience as a combat medic?? Any advice in general either about 68w or just choosing an mos.
>>
>>34576698

It doesn't really matter for SMP. Either pick something with a TS so you can get a clearance knocked out, or pick whatever has the shortest training so you can get the fuck back to school.

You're never going to do your job in SMP anyways. It's sort of retarded to even send you to AIT.

This question doesn't apply to me but I began to wonder because of other anons.
How likely is it that someone could use body makeup to cover minor self-harm scars at MEPS?
Would they get fucked anyways later on when it isn't covered?

Holy shit, wait more than 15 minutes before whining.
Aircrew, medical, cyber, and intel are all good career fields.

Some good CONUS bases are Peterson/CMS/USAFA/Schriever, Buckley, JB Elmendorf, Travis, Ft. Meade, Andrews, JBSA.

Can someone give me a quick rundown on 19k OSUT, I'm about to sign my contract with the National Guard and there's not a lot of resources on what it's like.

>>
>>34576636
Same m8, people would rather shit on other branches, answer questions about MEPS that get asked 123491238432 times per thread, and answer the same "lol I smoked/had a traffic violation/had a misdemeanor 10 years ago can I still get a TS" question over and over and over. It's gotten to the point to where these threads aren't even helpful.

>>34577643

You know why people ignore you faggots? Cause you ask the same fucking questions that have already been asked. read the fucking thread before asking a question. DLAB links have already been posted.
Also you cant just blindly ask what jobs you should go fo? that doesn't make any fucking sense. We don't know you or what you like doing. Go for PJ I guess random person I know nothing about. Then that faggot asks where a good place to get stationed but again what defines good to you? Stupid questions asked by stupid faggots get ignored. Grow a brain then try again.

Are these threads a good place to get information and branch advice?

I don't, and I make darn sure I read the thread before asking a question.

That still doesn't change the fact that 90% of these threads are the same 4 questions regarding MEPS and clearances.

Well most faggots do. You even said so your self

That's literally my point. I cant inspire people to ask different questions dude I'm not that powerful.

>>34577920
I know this is bait relating to what I posted.

What youre supposed to do is do research on your own on google and get a general idea of what you want to do then come here and we help you sift through the bullshit. You cant just show up and say
> hur dur I'm 20 and a college drop out tell me what to do

>>34577990
Those MEPS and clearance questions always get responses though, while other genuine questions get ignored. That's where my annoyance comes from

Is Navy bootcamp worse or better than this? I don't know how I can convince you I'm not a bitch from this story, I can deal with stress, I just need to get away from this, I can't take it anymore. They're reliving fucking up eachothers lives every time they get drunk (nearly daily) and I just can't take it anymore.

I don't drink, smoke, or do any sort of drug including anti-depressants or anything. Is the Navy a good choice?
>>
>>34578056
Didn't happen this thread, but I asked a question about what 68W's do when they aren't deployed, and the one response I got was "they do combat medic stuff, what do you expect". This didn't answer my question at all for obvious reasons.

Thousands upon thousands have made it through boot, I'm sure youll be just fine.
Like I'm preaching, look at some rates and see what interests you than ask us to clarify.

>>34578064
Like I said did you read the thread?
There are multiple posts explaining why the marines are a meme branch. There are also multiple posts saying how you need to already know what MOS/rate you want before going to see a recruiter otherwise they'll sell you a load of bullshit which is exactly what those pictures are. Cmon dude faggy pamphlets like that are how they sucker highschool kids into signing up and stick them in some bullshit MOS.

Again, what jobs are you even interested in?
What are these long term plans?
You don't even give us enough info.

>>34578100
Ok but tahts about as good of an answer as youll get because what has been said is that no one experience is universal.
It all depends on
>what command/ship youre at
>who youre CO is
Stuff like that, you could grab 10 random 68Ws and theyd all probably be doing different things. That general answer is literally as good as it will get. Youll most likely be working at a base hospital.
>>
>>34578036

The answers to those questions are simple.

"What kind of jobs do I like?" does not have simple answers.
>>
>>34578100

>68W

If they're doing something MOS-related, it'll be handing out motrin at an aid station or being a clerk at a hospital.

If they're not doing something MOS-related it'll be the same shit as everyone else who has no real work to do: cleaning and standing around.
>>
>>34578131
I've looked at some rates, my friend is currently in the Navy and I've talked to him about his opinion, he's an FC working with the CWIS.

>FT
I like submarines and think I'd be able to get used to the gay stuff on them (literally and figuratively), sharing beds/people fapping on the rack below me while I'm trying to sleep etc. However I'm worried about having to work harder than on a normal ship.
>LS just seems cool, I've heard you get to wheel and deal hooking people up.

>I know some programming
>I can score well on the ASVAB
>I don't want long working hours and would like to have a decent amount of free time
>I don't like working directly with heavy machinery, using a weed wacker makes me uncomfortable. I currently work in Landscaping and Stocking a gas station.

I've looked at some of the tech rates too like Cryptology and Electronics rates. Its kind of hard to tell what the life is actually like from the descriptions on their site though. I'm looking for a home and a career rather than picking up quick training and then moving to the civilian workforce.
>>
>>34578265
>FC working with the CWIS
This is good

>subs
avoid subs at all costs. Shitty port calls, shitty quality of life. Not worth it.

>LS
Youre a glorified warehouse worker. Its filled with retards cause of how easy it is. Slow advancement and no/little bonuses. Plus the job is gay as fuck.

Well the best intel rate is CTN, its hard as fuck though and you wont be on a ship. They work almost exclusively out of intel bases so if you actually want a ship then go CTR or CTT or IT.
>>
>>34577607
trick question

they all suck
>>
>>34578317
What makes LS as a job gay? I work in a storeroom right now I a seriously don't mind moving boxes around and checking stores and stuff. In regards to the shit advancement and bonus's that just means the money is bad right?

What does IT actually do on a ship and how hard is it to actually get IT as a rate? I know tons of people probably want to do IT because you get to do easy/cool stuff that other people just don't know how to do for whatever reason.

I guess I should be leaning towards IT because of my interests in life.
>>
>>34577939
Not past MEPS yet because of reasons but the flatfootedness wasn't a massive concern. I just spilled my spaghetti because when asked whether I was prescribed orthotics, or use them, I forgot what an orthotic was and got confused.
Then they were wanting to see podiatrist paperwork relating to my feet. Mildly concerned as I have huge feet and had a few pain problems for a while due to somehow getting wrong shoe/sock sizes.

You don't consider that gay? I sure do. Whats cool about that man?

Yes the money is bad. The tougher the job the faster the advancement and the higher the bonuses for re-enlisting and special asignments. Again LS is a nigger tier retard job so its not in high demand.

>IT
Sets up and monitors the ships network and off and on communications.
Its not to hard to get.

for realsies though, in the marine corps how much you'll enjoy your first enlistment has quite a bit to do with your training pipeline, because the longer you're stuck in TCOM the more you hate the corps
