Go to LGS today to see if they have a good price on a used GP100. They have one for $540. I think that's breddy gud so I ask to see it. Some fag has painted the front AND rear sight white but gun otherwise checks out as solid. I jokingly ask for a discount because now I have to spend 30 seconds cleaning paint off the sights and dude says okay $500+tax. SOLD.

Get home and am looking through the contents of the box. Find receipt where some fucking moron paid Gander mtn $744 for this gun brand new in march PLUS he paid $40 for a 1yr warranty. Outside of the box has the LGS sticker that says he sold it to them in June.

So I just got a basically brand new GP100 for $550 that some dude paid almost $800 for 4 months ago.

Idiots are keeping the gun industry afloat. Never doubt it.

Oh and I went straight to the range. Gun is pretty fucking sweet right out of the box but I have to fuck with shit always so spring pack is on the way. Trigger job incoming for maximum thrusts per squeeze.

What gun anon? I've got some revolvers with pretty high round counts. They all develop a carbon ring that I could scrub off if I gave a fuck. None of them have actually lost metal like yours appears to have. Only flame cutting I've ever seen was the top strap on one of my buddies aluminum-framed .357 snubbies.

except that actually hurts the gun industry. instead of buying two guns, they buy one gun for the price of two. the manufacturers don't see the extra money. they charge a flat fee for the guns they sell to resellers, which in turn sell fewer guns because they overcharge.

Would a 357 serve as a good innawoods gun for VA? I've heard 12 gauges are the best for innawoods stuff but I like the idea of something I can carry easily
>>
>>34555732
Quite good. You can load snake shot if snakes are your concern. 357 hard cast would be enough for black bear. Shoot one in the air, 5 into the bear

357 with the right ammo is a good innawoods gun for anywhere. Hardcast lead will kill anything short of a grizzly, and some underwood Xtreme meme will oneshot bears and shoot down helicopters.

Would hot 357 out of a 6 inch barrel be able to take a whitetail inside 100 yards?
>>
>>34556220
Yes but there are much better choices for that.

Hogs are supposed to be a lot tougher than Deer and I've seen a guy shoot a hog dead with one 9mm from a Beretta at around 100 yards so .357 should definitely do the trick but as I said there are way better options.

If I'm out in the woods I don't see why I'd limit myself to a pistol.
>>
>>34555856

Way better than six shots, and trigger pulls feel better due to the less rotation needed in the gun.

Aftermarket is lacking though. Not too many speed loaders for them rounds.

>>34555532
I don't mind it for now. If it gets worse I'll contact S&W about it. I know that every 1,000 rounds I'll have to send it in to get the top strap shield replaced. I'm not one to bitch about things; they made a gun for a specific purpose and stand behind the product as it needs service and their warranty is reportedly awesome.
>>
>>34556220
Sufficiently hot .357 can take anything in CONUS, but a .44 Mag would give you a lot more room for error.
I honestly can't imagine hunting with a .357 on purpose in a time when .44 Mag exists.
>>
>>34555856
8-shots are a bit excessive since they're such a dramatic step up in size and weight from a 6- or 7-shot medium frame gun.
That notwithstanding, I do wish S&W would make some X-frame guns in normal calibers.

>>34553937
Well, PSA I guess, be careful if you're buying an EAA Windicator. I just sent mine back to manufacturer today. It had a weird issue where the hammer wouldn't cock back all the way sometimes, I think it was something fucked up with the cylinder.

They're great guns if you get a good one, but their QC is really spotty, and their return policy sucks balls, you have to pay for shipping both ways. I'm not saying don't buy one, it's probably the cheapest .357 that's actually solid (so not Rossi or Taurus), but they have a much higher rate of defects than other guns.
>>
>>34556290
Am I fucked since I have small hands? The gp100 is pretty big
>>

OP here. I took my hammer out to look at where it's rubbing the frame when I went to measure for the shims and holy fuck Ruger did not give a fuck about the finishing inside this gun. Giant fucking burr on the side of the hammer near the sear notch. Easy to fix for me but goddamn. I can't wait to see what other surprises I find inside when my springs and shims get here and I do the action job. Also the inside of the frame where the cylinder is is also rough as hell. the top strap looks like zero polishing was done after the cast. Makes no difference to function but fuck me I expected better. I'll be polishing all that shit myself just so it's easier to clean...
>>
I just found out about Kimber's K6 line and holy shit guys I think I'm in love.

Anybody here have any experience with these sexy little things?
>>
>>34562641
>I expected better
Why? Rugers are well-known for being sturdy and functional, but that's basically it.
Refinement is the last thing I'd expect from them.
>>
>>34562798
The rough stuff inside around the cylinder I agree with you. the huge burr near the sear notch was a functional issue. I almost couldn't get the hammer out it was dragging so bad on the frame. None of this is a problem for me since I can do all my own finishing work. I'm just surprised because the only other Ruger I have experience with is my blackhawk that is much more finely finished on the inside.

I'm also kind of excited because, while heavy, the SA and DA triggers are already pretty good. I already see so much work to do that it's looking like this gun will have a superb action when I get done with it.
>>
>>34562798

This is true. Overbuilt as fuck and in need of a polishing / messaging from the factory.

I'm glad there's one of these up.

I'm looking for an aesthetic blue & wood gun, akin to a nagant in appearance, but it will fire .38 special, and will cost less than $400.

I'd prefer new, but I've pretty much accepted it'll have to be used. RIA makes a colt copy but I'd have to get wood grips for it... it's in my price range but this is going to be a very planned purchase.

suggestions?

my nearest LGS has a "llama" brand .44 mag and a taurus snub. then there's the surplus store, with litterally a thousand handguns in stock but like 3 revolvers, all new smith and wessons.

the guys in the mall don't have anything used...

there's more stores but they're like a 2 hour drive or more.

Theyre basically the same quality. The barrels on the snubs are just cut down and rough finished full sized barrels and the metal itself is pretty damn "meh".

They aren't going to hold up to any real use

I'm thinking about getting a revolver for fun and possibly carry, I was looking at the GP100 Match Champ (which I wouldn't carry) or the LCRx. Is it advisable to steer clear of Taurus. I like their Raging Bull series and have seriously considered a Tracker in .357 with 7 shot since it's about $425

I've heard a lot of shit on here about their guns but not sure how much is fact and how much is memes
>>
>>34576334
Taurus is fine if you know how to evaluate a revolver at time of purchase to make sure you get a good one. They skimp on QC so more lemons make it to market then the other guys but they use the same materials and the same mfg techniques as S&W.

>>
>>34571081
>>34576334
Taurus has a lot of horror stories, but if you believe everything you read on forums, especially /k/ and accepted them as commonplace occurrences there would be like 3 guns your could purchase without fear of the. Coming apart in your hands. I fucking hate Taurus as a company but for the average person they're fine. For 1000k rounds a range trip, that's iffy. But like the other anon said just learn how to check them out before purchase and what to keep an eye on afterwards
>>
>>34578103
They are though. My range has 9mm SW you can rent
>>
>>34578103
Google "9mm revolver" before you ask that question next time, because they are. While a 9mm can be made smaller than a .38spl revolver it all necessitates the use of moon-clips, which in turn require a tool for loading and unloading the clips.

At that rate why bother with a revolver in the first place. They're great guns but it just doesn't appeal to many people
>>
>>34578103

They're not terribly common but they do exist.
>>
Is there any reason to not use dirt cheap steel case ammo like tula in a revolver?
>>
>>34572163
I'm a huge fan of the lcr38 myself. Shrouded hammer is a nice choice if it's going to be primarily concealed, but still very shootable. 357 is fun but do some research and fire some. You'll likely find you just wanna shoot high end 38 carry ammo.
>>
>>34578103
9mm is not a crimped at the case head, which can result in bullets with bad QC jumping crimp under recoil. It's not an incredibly common problem, but it does happen enough that you would need to be mindful of it.

Also, as the other anon said, it forces you to use moon clips.

>>34578132
On top of all of its other faults, Tula is loaded extremely weak and has horrible QC. Do you really want to risk your gun getting a squib or stuck cylinder just so you could save a few cents per round? Just reload if it's that much of a concern for you.

>>34575888
A novice will have a pretty hard time with any smol gun, but you could probably achieve a higher maximum ROF with the automatic since you'd lose less time reloading.
The revolver would have a higher sustained ROF, though, since you'd never need to stop and reload all your mags.
A more proficient shooter could shoot the revolver faster, though; on a DA revolver you can fire as fast as you can pull the trigger since pulling the trigger cocks the hammer and rotates the next round into position, so you don't have to wait for the slide to reciprocate.
>>
>>34578127
You don't need a moon clip tool, it's just really nice to have.
>>
>>34553937
happens a lot with revolvers. noobs buy their first gun as a revolver then realize its too heavy to carry and they want 20+ rounds of 9meme-ter

That always amazes me. As a guy that carries nothing but a charter undercover, and a speed strips some days, and a gi 1911 with two spares other days, how someone would pick up a 4 inch 686 and think 'im going to get an iwb and be good to blow' then not carry out of convenience.

Carrying a gun should not be a matter of comfort, it should be a matter of efficiency. I know I'm out of place with you guys being all about 'muh 17 rounders' and pray and spray, but quality before quantity. Not hard.

In .357 lighter bullets will help with recoil, but are loud as FUCK. They're also harder on the gun. I'd never shoot anything but .38 out of a .357 snub, hell I'd probably shoot .38 +P out of a 4" due to .357's muzzle blast...bothers me more than the recoil.

The caliber is stamped on one side of the barrel. If it says .357 Magnum, you can also shoot .38 Special out of it.
Push the cylinder to the left while pushing forward on the button on the side to swing it out (for reloading)
The model and serial number will be engraved underneath the little arm that holds the cylinder on.
The hammer has been modified so that it doesn't snag when drawn from a pocket, so that guns was probably carried at some point.

I don't know if the nickel is worth anything, but most Super Blackhawks aren't hard to get at around $400. I paid $450 plus shipping for a stainless Redhawk .44.
>>
What's a good beginner CC revolver? ~$400 limit, .357 preferred, good aftermarket (grips, triggers, sights).

My knowledge on weapons in general is small. Currently have a .22LR Marlin 795 and know the M16A4 pretty well. Beyond that, not much

>>

>>

Terrible advice for someone so new to guns. They are not comfortable to shoot and he needs to spend time training and learning.
>>34605532
Take this man's advice. Sp101 strikes a good balance for a 357 cc
>>
>>34606371
I've shot an sp101 and an LCR and neither one is fun to shoot many .357s out of. 38 practice loads are pretty tame in either. That's why my nod goes to the lighter gun because he might actually carry it. You can't pocket carry an sp101. Small guns suck for learning to shoot but that doesn't stop people from buying them as first guns because they are easier to carry. Better to have a gun you suck with on you than one you shoot really well in a drawer at home.
>>
>>34606416
Oh and the LCR had a much nicer trigger out of the box than the sp101 although the sp101 did clean up real nice with some polishing, a spring kit and some shims.

Confirm/deny: Ruger GP100s and Super Redhawks have identical grip studs and use the same grips, so if, for example, I wanted to put Match Champion grips on a Super Redhawk, they would drop right in without any gunsmithing or swear words.

S&W 629 6" half-underlug or Ruger Super Redhawk 6.5" for babby's first .44 Mag?
The SRH is objectively better at doing .44 Magnum things, being sturdy enough for the most powerful loads, nearly half a pound heavier, and easier to scope, but the 629 can handle all the loads I'm likely to shoot in the near future and is much better-looking, even with the lock.

I really like the thing for some odd reason, I avoided the things for years thinking they were saturday night specials, caved in I figured when I got it at the least it'd be cool just to have around as an option when I get my carry license for that. I really want a 9x19 pistol right now. I already got a nice stack of a few hundred 44 rounds sitting around so I'd just be losing out on a fuck ton of money if I did try to trade it to go get something else.

I was aiming to either get a second one in a different model variant of it before, then one of those new Ruger gp100 in 44spl came out so I was planning on getting one of those instead. Once I have the reloading thing I have planned set up at least progress on that's just been really slow.

Main reason is I of don't want to branch out for another caliber without totally switching over. 9 is just way more accessible. It's kind of fun finding 44 stuff now because it feels almost like going on a scavenger hunt finding related stuff so I get really happy when I find things like speed loaders/strips or right sized boar brushes and things. If I got a nine I could just find all the accessories and stuff like that way easier.

Is there a reason the 4" gp100 is more popular than the 6" is the 6" too heavy or something?
>>
>>34617310
4" is just more popular in general not just for GP100. It's pretty much the best compromise between ballistic performance and handling.
>>
>>34617349
As someone who's never shot a magnum, how does 357 feel out of the 4" barrel?

It's more dramatic than 9mm out of a plastic service auto, but neither painful nor unmanageable if you've got both hands firmly on the gun.

>>

GP100s categorically look like shit, with the obvious exception of the Match Champion.
>>
>>34617310
4" revolvers are the best blend of ergos and ballistics as far as many people are concerned.

Weighs less than 6", points better, carries/draws easier.

To give you a general idea say we have one 125gr load we'll call X.

out of a 3" barrel if you got 1250FPS(almost 9mm level) then you'd expect to get ~1500FPS from a 4" barrel but have to go up to 6" to get to 1700fps.

It helps that many people consider a 4" revolver a viable CCW but a 6" one to be unrealistic.

> Gun dies at BFV
> Horribly under engineered

They murder guns there from use. If a gun has been made, BFV has killed it.

Anybody shooting one on a regular schedule is going to notice issues or problems with it, or the brass, before it becomes a problem. A gun that goes through shitloads of firing, and they state that it gets shot a fucking LOT.

http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2015/09/16/handgun-experiences-from-battlefield-las-vegas/

> Our old trusty Colt .38 continues to run but it doesn’t see anywhere near the high-round counts of the S&W 500. That guns scares me because after seeing the kaboom, we’ve scheduled in our books to replace the barrel every six months, regardless of round count.
>>
>>34618687
>.38 Special is just easier to hit with, and easier to deliver follow-up shots.

That's a training issue. If you want to get good at something you have to do it a lot. You wanna git gud shooting magnum loads? Shoot a lot of magnum loads. 357 really isn't shit compared to the big bore magnums.
>>
>>34618814
Name one other gun that has exploded in somebody's hands as a result of BFV's abusive treatment.
I don't think it's too much to ask for an X-frame to not catastrophically fail as a result of continuous use with a cartridge that the platform was literally designed around.
This isn't like the Model 19, where .357 was shoehorned into a frame that was never intended for that powerful a cartridge, or the 29, where it couldn't handle hot 300 grain silhouette loads that didn't exist when it was designed.
The .500 Magnum cartridge and the X-frame were literally made for each other, so a Model 500 blowing up as a result of a steady diet of SAAMI-spec ammo is unacceptable.
>>
>>34612658
I have an old model vaquero in colt 45, I love it. They are great guns. The new model is a smaller frame and has a couple other little improvements such as the the cylinder lining up with the loading get when it is open. The old model kind of hovers between clicks when it is lined up. Really the only reason to get an old model is that they are completely over built and can handle some insane hand loads in 45 colt...there is cartridge data in the reloading manuals for 45 colt that specifically states that it is only for T/C, Freedom Arms and Ruger old Vaquero/blackhawk revolvers... 240gr bullets @ 1500+fps, 300gr @ 1200+fps.
>>
>>34618244
Ugh. Thanks senpai. Looks great.

I think if they didn't have that warning bullshit on the side of the barrel I'd almost like them more than S&W stuff. The full lug is a bit awkward from some angles but in others it just makes the gun look so beefy.
