canacuck here, wanting a .308 for a bear gun
The norinco m305 is looking pretty lewd for the price we can get it up here at about $600. Is it worth picking up or is it a shitty gun?
>>
>>34325209
>would buying an old used police shotgun (like an old 870) be a viable home defense shotgun?

As long as your 870 doesn't suffer from QC issues, it is viable. Any sort of shotgun whether it be 20ga or 12ga is acceptable for home defense, just select a good #1 buckshot or 00 buckshot load that works best in your gun.

Measure the longest distance in your home and then pattern your shotgun at the range, learning what is the exact spread at 3,5,7,10,14, yards. You do not neccesarily need a high speed low drag shotgun for home defense, one thing I may argue for having is a weapon mounted light.
>>
>>34324930

That's by design. Keeps the action from opening while firing. Otherwise slight that slight rearward pressure would cost you a hand/face.
>>

It was imported to relieve pressure on the shortage during the Sandy Hook panic. No reason to keep importing it once supply is stabilized and domestic manufacturers need to sell their Hillary panic stash.

Part of the reason why it was so cheap is because the AU$ is fucking shit compared to US$ and CA$, and it was likely taking up warehouse space in Australia. They probably cleared it out at rock bottom prices for the US export market.

Unfortunately, you're not getting any more without a time machine. Try Prvi Partizan or Fiocchi, or start reloading yourself.

It's a .223 case and the marks are uniform all the way around. Neck is also dented
>>
>>34327695
>A-All shotties can shoot slugs, r-right?
Sort of. If they're rifled foster slugs, they're meant to be shot out of a smooth bore since the slug itself has the rifling on them.

If they are a sabot slug, they are meant to be shot out of a rifled barrel like a...rifle.
Generally if you want a shot gun for shot, get a smooth bore since a rifled barrel will make shot spread like crazy.
A lot of people have both barrels and deer hunt with sabot slugs.
>>
>>34327695
Probably a section for designated slug shotguns. They typically have rifle style sights for long range shooting and and a vent rib barrel, usually ported to vent gas. Also includes rifled shotguns which are the only ones compatible for sabot slugs.

>>
>>34327799
Somebody was probably shooting it way farther down than where you were looking and that was likely a stray. They will honestly chunk brass 15-25 yards without issue if they are un-impeded
>>
>>34327796
It takes more than energy to kill a bear. .45-70 has a flat nose for deeper, straighter penetration while the heavier bullet weight resists change in motion, ensuring it won't get sent astray if it hits brush/bone. .308 on the other hand is fast the spitzer tip is going to curve off as soon as it hits. It has a lower overall frontal surface area meaning it'll destroy less tissue along the way.

Some of the harder ones like the Brenneke lineup are good for bear but the softer traditional foster slugs are too soft and have poor sectional density due to their shape for use beyond beyond black bear.

Not the anon you were responding to, but what about one of those fantastic meme rifles like the Nemo Omen or Noreen bn36 in 300wm. That has to be fairly ideal, plus you could use it as your primary hunting rifle, no need for 2 at that point.

There was a thread up the other day of a guy out hunting abd got charged by a massive grizzly bear, and he put 8 or so 7mm rem mag rounds into it, stopping it a few feet from where he stood.
>>
>>34328243
That oughta crack a skull but otherwise it's not a guaranteed one shot kill. People have done bear autopsies and found .308s lodged in the brain of bears that were otherwise fully alive and functional. I think a 300 Win Mag will do the job and it's certainly got some range to it but you absolutely must be prepared to shoot again.
>>
>>34328308

Not him but could you kill a black bear with say 40 rounds of 5.56 55 grain ball?

My parents live inna Appalachia and I'm sacred shitless of my mom getting attacked by a black bear and I want to get a gun that a 65 year old woman can handle but it'll kill a bear dead
>>
>>34328356
People kill black bear with .357s all the time. It's not super reliable or safe for the shooter but it works. Black bears are kinda wimpy and prefer to flee if they can, things like grizzlies are the fucking worst though. A full mag of 5.56 would do the trick for sure but I'm not so convinced on using 55gr bullets.

>>
>>34329297
Boil non-spring metals to remove cosmoline, not so sure about other materials. Removing bluing from a gun is easy because bluing is just a type of rust that looks good, I douse mine in a strong penetrating oil such as Kroil, that shit eats the bluing off your gun real fast.

What swords would Major Generals of the CSA carry in the American Civil War? Are there any reference images?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_Cleburne
>>
Purchased a Ruger LCP II and currently waiting for it to be shipped to my FFL.

while browning the manual to learn how to field strip it I noticed that they don't reccommend that you carry with a loaded chamber. While normally I would simply chalk that up to Ruger being Ruger. I did notice that the gun does not have a firing pin block or a drop safe mechanism. That's odd.

Now I'm concerned that I bought a gun that's unsafe to carry. There's no way in hell I'm carrying without a loaded chamber, but since it's a pocket gun, I kind of want something that's drop safe as it's more likely to happen than with a gun that's going to sit in a holster all day.

Would ruger be stupid enough to market a pocket gun that's not drop safe and try to rectify it with a clause in their manual that is indistinguishable from their typical "never load or shoot a gun ever!" lingo?

Here's a hot tip: Is it legal in California? If yes then it's safe. Every gun sold there past a certain point is forcibly drop tested off hilarious heights that you personally would not survive. If it's legal there, you're good. To be most specific, the LCP I and II are totally safe guns but it's best to err on the side of not getting sued and tell people not to carry it loaded, especially on a gun with no safety. Drop safeties and firing pin blocks are not an inherent answer either, they're largely marketing buzz first and foremost and each one must be personally inspected to ensure functionality.

CZ 75 (and clones Baby eagle, tanfoglio) are good all around target guns.
92A1 excellent accuracy although heavier than most options good for training.

FNX-9 early models had polymer issues they are now meme guns here ignore the squish reviews.

Inverters are a possibility to run AC-powered gizmos off of DC batteries, but are incredibly inefficient which is something you want to avoid in a bunker scenario.

Use laptops and/or RV-type TVs for direct DC power input to avoid the extra inverters.

I just moved to Virginia and I hate how all the good ranges are indoors. As long as you have a hunting license for the season, is there anything to stop you from plinking on state Land Management land? Can they do anything as long as you're not being reckless and are using hunting-legal firearms?

What happens if you happen to shoot and kill a couple of home intruders and refuse to give your gun for evidence? Not violently, just say you lock the gun in your safe and say "I won't do anything until I speak to my lawyer" or something like that. I'm afraid of losing my AR or Hi Power in a situation like that.

Just give it up and don't make things harder for yourself. They'll get it with a warrant, and you'll look very suspicious of guilt.

Is there a difference in terminology for barrels that are fixed to the frame of a handgun, like the ppk, and others like the 1911? Is there a difference in performance between the two, assuming all other factors are the same?
>>
>>34338741
They're called fixed barrels, surprised? They typically offer enhanced accuracy compared to a canting or otherwise moving barrel because they are fixed in place and don't wiggle around. If you really must ask though, the gun will outshoot the user and there's no downside to using a canting barrel unless you're top of top skilled. Fixed barrels tend to be harder to replace because they're often fused or pressed into the receiver.

How good is the 590A1 compared to a regular 500?

I can't get a 500 in my country.
>>

The 590a1 is built stronger, heavier receiver, less plastic parts. It also has better aftermarket for things like mag tube extensions.
>>

Alright, I also see that the finish is different, parkerized? Does it scratch as easily?
>>

590A1 is the American Navy model and is generally tougher in every way as needed from a service gun. I'm surprised you can't get regular 500s but you can get a genuine military weapon.

Just hold the gun dude. Find out what's most comfortable and offers the most control by experimenting. You can't teach basic motor skills through a video. You're overthinking it.

well i was doing that and my friend told me i was holding my gun retardedly and that my knuckles on my left hand should be at an angle and thumb should be parallel to the slide like this. feels kinda unnatural to bend my wrist that far forward though
>>
>>34340524
That's a pretty good grip, I use it myself but if it hurts you then it hurts and therefore it's inherently not a good grip style for you and will probably fuck up a tendon. Have you tried putting your off hand fingers on the front of the trigger guard? That's what it's for and why it's got that little groove shape to it, you can likely rest your pointer finger up there to improve the angle of your hand.

If it still doesn't work then tell your friend to fuck off. As long as you're capable of putting rounds on target relatively reliably at expected self defense ranges, you're good.

What's the best way to ensure instant death by firearm? Do you want to aim upwards at a 45 degree angle through the mouth? Is FMJ decidedly worse than HP? Should you opt for a high-grain, large caliber rifle round, or is a blast of 12 gauge slug more "certain"?
>>
>>34340599
Put gun in mouth and aim back towards brain stem. Use a wide caliber expanding bullet such as a JHP. Shotgun is preferred and is fatal in over 99% of cases, the exception being people who fuck up and blow off their face. Use anything labelled as buckshot or foster slug, don't use sabot slugs because those are small and thin with little frontal surface area.
>>
>>34340612
Is it easy to fuck up the angle? You see stories of people who blew their faces up instead of dying right, but most of those seem like they were trying to get attention and were wincing away from the barrel when they pulled the trigger. Is it possible to aim too steeply when compensating for this?
>>
>>34340617
Aim low rather than high, if you miss the stem then you'll blow out your spinal cord itself. Even if you STILL fuck up you'll still rapidly pass out and die from the sheer lack of blood flow to the brain. Here's a hot tip I forgot to mention: Draw an imaginary line between both ears. You want your line of fire to cross this line. Don't think too hard about this, as long as the gun is pointed straight and in your mouth you'll have a guaranteed kill with something like a shotgun.

You can use an adjustable stock and vertical forward grips without giving a damn about OAL, also no worries about nebulous status of braces and how to use them, which ATF loves to change their minds on
>>
>>34340642
Armbraces are often fully adjustable these days but you are right about the foregrip part.
>>
>>34340627
Awesome, thanks. One more question: can the power of the load increase kill probability? It sounds like it's all about shot placement, but if you're using 12 gauge, will 3" magnum buckshot be at all more effective than standard 2 3/4" shells?
>>
>>34340645
I don't know about Sig brace, or the newer SBT stuff, but the KEK Notastockwave uses a hex key to tighten a set screw for adjustment
>>
>>34340647
Yes, increased energy will improve the rate at which expansion of the projectile occurs in addition to just plain battering your body harder. I could go on for hours about this but I'll say it doesn't matter one bit. We're talking about an incredibly soft and thin part of the body, anything you shove at it will most likely overpenetrate. Don't think too hard about it.
>>

New to carrying and I've run into an issue. I share my gun safe with my SO, so I don't like storing guns with one in the chamber. But this means unloading and then re-chambering every morning. Set back is going to become an issue with my SD ammo, even with a crimp.

Gopd luck, that's a pretty exotic cartridge these days, especially with 7mm Mag hogging the lime light.

For what it's worth, the criticism I always here for heavy .264 bullets is they lack wounding potential because they are too dense at 2600fps and under so they take forever to open up in tissue. A quick glance at the web shows people bitching that the .264 Win Mag blows up when it hits bone and you need a heavier bullet.

I'm inclined to think both parties are somewhat full of shit, since the Euros love 6.5x55. Stick to a heavier bullet, probably a bonded or monolithic if you're shooting very close or the game is big boned, and I hope to god you're hand loading.

so you're saying that if the situation arises where the authority of the government is no longer inviolable, they are going to have their operators broadcasting their allegiance for everyone to see? You're saying that they won't make any attempt to disguise their skills and capabilities?

Furthermore, you're saying that people are going to walk around in a SHTF situation and have no expectation of confrontation?

None. Memery aside, the Taurus m9 clone is fine. They bought a Barreta plant, kept all the tooling, and kept most of the staff on. The two have diverged a bit since, but that is one of the few Taurus guns that isn't trash.

HEY /k/!
I have a chance to buy either a 57' Winchester 30-30 lever action cowboy rifle, or a Tikka bolt action for around the same price. Which do I go with? It'd be hardcore breaking the bank to do both so I really don't want to make that bad decision.

My plan is to eventually have a gun for every situation

Shotgun-Check
Long Rifle- working on it
AR/Carbine- (probably gonna be an sks, also need to move away from this phobic roommate first)
Handgun- Not till I'm 21
>>
>>34348917
Maybe I should explain a little more clearly
I want a rifle that
-I can hunt with
-I can have fun shooting with
-Won't get fucked/broken easily
-I can snipe with in a SHTF situation
I mean thinking about it the Tikka fills all these checkboxes better but I think the Winchester would look so good on the wall and I really like lever actions.
I guess then it's more of a question of "should I get the rifle that is functionally better for the situations I may need it for or buy the one that looks nice on the wall and is fun as fuck to shoot with?"
>>
>>34349103
Personally I'd go with the Tikka. These rifles are god-tier and you can always pick up a nice Winchester at pretty much any gun show for a good price.
>>
>>34349145
In this case the Tikka is 100 bucks more and doesn't have a scope yet.
Really, even pre 64 Winchesters? I haven't been on this board long but I got the impression they were a little more desirable/rare?
>>
>>34349216
Eh, I don't really know
I'm really not a cowboy action guy so I don't know much about lever actions but every time I go to a gun show it's filled to the brim with Winchesters.
Maybe the market is a bit different up here in Canada too

I have a Tikka T3x .308 and it fills all those boxes but it is completely soulless. I have regreted not buying a lever since I bought it, I am now seriously considering selling it and using the money I get to buy a lever action in either 45/70 or 30-30, leaning more towards 45/70.
The woods are so thick and the fields are few and far between so I dont really need a rifle that can reach out to long ranges and I also have alot of bears in the area and I would feel more confident with a 45/70 then a 308

I want to start reloading .30-06 to save money. I don't care about special precision rounds or quality really, I just want the lowest possible cost per round, and I want to use the cheapest possible equipment.

I found this Lee press for $25 on Amazon, pic related. Is this and a .30-06 die all I need to get started?

And how do I pick powder? I know nothing about the different kinds of powder. Again, I just want the cheapest one that will do the job.

My .30-06 is a semi-auto, if that makes a difference. I was about to buy an all-in-one reloading kit for even cheaper but reviews said it only worked for boltguns. Will this work for a semi?
>>
>>34350210
You need a lot more than that to start reloading. You need a scale to weigh powder and ideally some sizing dies if you're using fired brass plus a doohickey to push out the primer. Look into some books about reloading, it's more than just playing with Lego. There are a lot of mechanics and rules involved if you want your creations to be safe.
>>
>>34350210
Let me start with saying i'm still pretty inexperienced with reloading.

>Is this and a .30-06 die all I need to get started?
A scale, tri beam manual scales will be the cheapest.
Calipers, cheap dial ones are good enough.
Case trimmers later if you plan on reusing brass more than a few times.

>how do I pick powder?
You dies will come with a list of powder and loading recommendations just start the ones that are cheapest on that list.

>My .30-06 is a semi-auto, if that makes a difference.
Not really, you do have to be a bit more careful not to under/over load your ammo.
The reviews are wrong any AIO kit will do the same for semi's.
>>

>>34350210
Also >>34350243 is right but if you get a lee ultimate die set it will come with all the dies you need for 30-06.

Other sets without factory crimp dies will also work but the cost between the sets is pretty small.

Ok, I think I found the wrong one. I found one that has the depriming tool and shell holder and stuff too for a little more money. Pic related. I watched a guy do it on youtube and he did the complete process with nothing but this kit, a die, and a scale and calipers.

And everyone said the other kit wouldn't work because it did neck sizing only or something like that. The kit was all in one, it didn't even need a die.
>>
>>34350274
Those are mainly for handloading unfired brass.
The C style press you pictured earlier and a 30-06 dieset can still be had for pretty cheap.
>>
>>34350255
It's a very popular european hunting cartridge, so probably for a very long time.

It is pretty easy to find new manufacture stuff for the same price as decent 308.
>>
>>34350274
>>34350278
Oh and one more thing to add, if you go for the C style press you need either a hand primer or the ram primer upgrade.
>>
>>34350278
Why does the other press work better for fired brass?
>>
>>34348802
Yes
>>
>>34350605
fired brass may need to be resized, which requires sizing dies, and is just better suited for a bench mounted press.

i recently dug out my old jc higgins 103.18 .22 single shot bolt action that i bought at a gun show for 20 bucks when i was like 8 years old. pretty sure it's a marlin model 100 that was rebranded for the sears catalog in the 50's. anyway theres no feed ramp on it so i have to put each round into the hole by hand so it gets kinda tedious after a while.

does anyone know if this gun is supposed to have a feed ramp and if so where can i buy one? i cant find any pictures of it with an open bolt online

>>

>>
>>34355299
i've tried the two different kinds of federal bulk packs as well as remington thunderbolt and it's happened several times with each brick. i shot maybe 100 rounds today of federal and got like 5-10 stovepipes and 3 light primer strikes.
>>
>>34355322
Interesting that the volquartsen extractor is still having stovepipes. Mine flings everything way out.

Wondering if it's just bad luck with ammo or maybe something with the bolt face, firing pin, or recoil spring is out of whack.

Yeah that's what I was talking about. Some of those fit my hand well, they just all seem a little janky.

>S&W Victory
I like the looks of it but I've heard of issues with reliability and with the rifling.

>Buckmark
Also like the looks of it but it's one of those guns that the manual tells you not to disassemble because it's so fiddly. You have to take the rear sight off just to start it.

Take down is pretty much why I bought a Ruger MK IV, but now that I'm a more experienced shooter I recognize when shooting it the symptoms of a gun that doesn't fit my hand.

I was going to see about getting the Volquartsen kit to see if taking all the pretravel out of the trigger fixes my issues with it, but Volquartsen isn't even selling them right now because the fucking gun was recalled.
