All lowers will be marked other since it is not a rifle or a pistol. Once you make it a rifle or pistol then it is a rifle or a pistol. There are kits that allow you to mate a pistol frame (glock/1911) with a 16" barrel and stock and it's perfectly legal to go from pistol to rifle to pistol.

Kyle Defoor (if you can get in, his classes consistently fill up a year in advance)

Northern Red (they still charge Haley money, but I think their curriculum makes more sense. IIRC nearly all of their instructors are former Delta or 3rd Group SF guys.)

Mike Pannone and Pat McNamara are both good instructors who still work hard unlike Vickers, but they also have a similarly abysmal student:instructor ratio. I would probably take Mike Pannone's Covert Carry Pistol class out of all of his.

There are some regional guys who are very good and extremely underrated.

NC people should look into The Range Complex (formerly known as Tigerswan). The instructors are mostly former Delta guys. Back in the Tigerswan days they did a lot of contract classes for the military. Kyle Defoor learned to teach while working for them.

NoVA people should look into Green Ops. Lead instructor is a SF guy and a phenomenal shooter. Very common-sense guy.

The AR aesthetic present during Vietnam falls under the banner of the A1, which are difficult to get correct parts for. I wouldn't blame you if you didn't get it perfect though. With the 20" barrel and the right .223 load you could take deer with it, although there are better hunting rounds.

It would be easier to go with the A2 look, which is somewhat reviled in here.
