Hey men,
I'm looking to dump my funs to fund degenerate hobbies. What is the best way to do this without getting mugged?

Has there been a concerted effort to make a more simplistic AR-15 pattern rifle? Basically, something with fewer parts, even cheaper, etc.

I am just curious to know if the military ever stopped and looked at the AR-15 like they did with the Thompson. Particularly during the Vietnam era when it was way more expensive to manufacture a single rifle compared to today where you can literally shit out an AR for a few Benjamins.

Shooting a new-to-me Tanfo compact, I've accidentally engaged the safety during recoil a few times.
Normally I grip with my thumbs slightly away from the frame, and this hasn't happened to me before with a full size Tanfo or full size CZs - only on the compact.
Is there any good reason not to ride my thumb on top of the safety on the compact, so it doesn't recoil into my thumb and engage? Would it push my group to the right or anything like that? Or is it considered acceptable form?

>>34040697
Assuming you're referring to 7.62x51 - No, none at all. It's perfectly fine to shoot any 7.62x51 round in a .308, and it shouldn't have any impact on accuracy either.

So I want to get a Ruger American Ranch, and I want to eventually suppress it, but I don't know what caliber to get. It's between.

>5.56
-Already have an AR, so I have plenty of ammo
-Have a Nikon 223 scope already
-Ammo is cheap, and subsonic relatively available

>.300 memeout
-Designed to be suppressed
-Nikon scope could still be used, but ballistic chart necessary
-Ammo a little more expensive, but decently available in stores near me

I'd be shooting at a maximum 300-400 yards, most frequently 150-250 yards, and possibly using the rifle to hunt deer or boar. Is .300blk a better option for a suppressed rifle than 5.56? Both rifles cost the same.

.308 Winchester or .30-06 Springfield?

I'm looking for a hunting rifle, and it always seems to come down to these two calibers.

I've heard many convincing arguments for the .308. I do believe most of the hype around it, and I think I would prefer it over .30-06.

However, be that as it may, when it comes to the sheer selection of firearms, I'm finding it a hell of a lot easier to find .30-06 rifles than .308. I'm already kind of picky with criteria, so that narrows it down even further for me.

What would you get if you were in my shoes?

I'm totally new to gun ownership and I was watching videos online on how to load semi automatic 9mm handguns. Every video I saw has you rack the slide and lock it before inserting the magazine, I'm wondering if it's ok to load a magazine with the slide in an un-racked position and then rack the slide to chamber a round.

I realize this is kind of an extra step but I bought my gun for home defense and want to leave it stored and loaded but without a round chambered.

Yes.

Every now and then PSA puts this slick side kit on sale for $299 with free shipping, usually as a holiday sale. They sell out quick. Add $50 at your LGS for a stripped lower, maybe $50 for a surplus carry handle, and you've got a $400 AR that's reliable and accurate. Fugly as shit, no forward assist, and no dust cover, but those attributes are of questionable worth anyway.

I have a series of questions
1st, what is the cheapest caliber to reload? For lever guns ? For pistols? For everything else?
2nd what is the best "marine" (read:nickel plated) shotgun for the price. I have noticed that most major brands like Remington and Winchester have them around $700, but Armscor has one for barely over $200. Is there a noticeable difference? Are there other brands I should be looking for?
3rd what is the quietest unsuppressed center fire gun? Looking for something for home defense that won't destroy my ears as much as my Ak74 or my carry (a p83).
>>

A few questions:
By gun permit do you mean concealed carry license? If so, good on you, it will greatly speed the process up.
What firearm are you purchasing and for what price?
>>
>>34050528
The FFL(gunshop owner) will be the one that does all of the background checks/paperwork. There will be a transfer fee of the firearm which will cost anywhere from $15-30 on average.
>>
>>34050740
I know they are cheap and all but man, did you even bother reading the AK general sticky?
>>
>>34040285
single shot and barrel shot gun. I mean what are you asking? like a modern semi auto rifle more simple than an AR? m16 and AK platform is about as minimalistic as it gets unless some new bolt tech is developed
>>
>>34050772
I got it because it was hell cheap for brand new and I only need a basic "ak". I looked up reviews for it and most of it was ok. Honestly for $400 even it was hard to turn away.
>>
>>34050772
And I read it but it was too late ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
>>
>>34050742
the 'permit to purchase' is a background check run by the state, i from what i have read its essentially the state saying i is a good boy and that the shop doesn't have to run the check, this is free but takes time to get my approval by mail, and is good for a year. i figure ill get comfortable with my firearm before carrying, which i intend to do. and its a sigp226 for ~600
>>34050757
im aware that the transfer fee is $25 but idk if they need to run their own background check if i get the permit. also im penny pinching, so any money I can save avoiding a paid for background check by the shop will turn into ammo

thanks for all the replies any additional info would be welcome for a new shooter

Ironically I found one for cheaper than the store's prices in about five minutes on Amazon. Enjoy the tits, guys.

>>
>>34050953
Most important thing to consider with a holster is that it protects the trigger. Leather works fine, kydex works better. The thing you have to consider about softer materials is that they wear out, and run the risk of hitting the trigger when holstering, or not protecting the trigger properly. Also, they can collapse, making holstering a pain in the ass. You want something that you can holster and unholster easily, ideally if you can do that one handed. Second important thing is comfort. You are going to be carrying a gun around all day, so it better not get in the way of your movement and sitting. Leather is actually very comfy once you break it in. Ask them if you could try a couple. The place I bought mine at had a bathroom where I could try on a couple.

Some other things to consider: kydex is noisier than leather and fabric. Everyone knows when you're getting your gun out. Some holsters have some kind of retention method, whether that's a strap, or some kind of button. Also, some holsters, like mine, are geared towards certain positions. Mine's for the 3-5 o'clock position, because it's my strong side. There are ones for offside carry, appendix, etc. Do some research on where you want to carry, and find a holster that's built around that. Most of the ones in store are going to be for the 3 o'clock, or 9 o'clock for lefties.

It's not the most important thing that you find THE BEST HOLSTER EVERâ„¢
What is important, is that you find one that does its job, and that you practice with it.

I don't have any experience with gun belts.

You do want to spend the money on a good holster, but yes, they're just trying to get more money out of you, and you should be wary of that.
>>
>>34051072

They didn't have any that would fit that particular gun with that particular laser, which was weird because my little brother's ultra-shitty one fit it fine despite not being made for it.

The one I bought of Amazon was decently tough-looking nylon, and pretty cheap. I don't expect a ton from it, but it definitely would fit the laser and seems durable enough. For the price I paid it should do the job at least long enough for me to buy another if I need to.

What guns should I get next?

I live in commiefornia and will not be able to get out for at least a year. I normally shoot 30 caliber milsur bolt action rifles but I need ammo I can find locally not to mention something semi auto.

I'm torn between a Ruger 10/22 and a mini 14.

10/22:
>super cheap .22 ammo
>super weak .22 ammo
>assault weapons laws don't apply since lol rimfire
>jamming problems with some ammo
The 10/22 I rented today at the range jammed due to a buildup of what appeared to be wax in the chamber. I've never had that happen before with any other 10/22 I've shot and some I've shot even more ammo at a time than that one. Then again, I do need something I can use for cheap marksmanship practice. It's cheap enough that I can probably pick one up tomorrow if I wanted to.

Mini 14
>5.56 or .223 ammo (more expensive than .22)
>ammo powerful enough for serious use vs animals or for defense
>overpriced gun
>shit quality control and build quality reported (like rear sight screw falling off)

So which one would you guys choose?
>>
>>34051367
Get a 10/22 and practice short-range basic marksmanship cheaply with .22, and save for something that you will really want once you leave that communist cesspit.
>>
>>34051367
I live in Europe so almost every rifle here is twice the price.

Ruger 10/22 is around 450$ and ammo is around 8$ for 50 rounds.

.223 ammo is like 22$ per 50 so my only other choice is SKS which costs the same as ruger and has slightly more expensive ammo at around 12$ per 50

Recent built Mini 14s don't have alot of QC issues other than a shit rear sight, also 5.56 is still super cheap and widely available compared to other intermediate cartridges available. I do recommend to get a stripper clip adapter for the Mini 14 since it'll save you cash in the long run unless there are aftermarket magazines available.

it a variation on the check deposit scam.they send you a bogus check for more than the price you are asking. They say "OOPS! just deposit it and send me the dif bro!" You deposit a $1000 check and send them say 4-500. A few days later the bank says the check bounced and now you are on the hook for all of it, and the "movers" never show up. Someone tried to pull this crap on me. I had a couch and a bedframe listed in two separate ads on CL. I got two identically worded messages saying they wanted to buy them and they would send me a check and send movers later. It was a beat to hell couch I was trying to sell for $50. Add in the cost of movers/distance and you may as well buy a new couch and get free delivery.

I was buying some bullets I saw two boxes of jacketed hollow points, different brands, 200 grain for one no fps labels or anything just looked it up 700fps with no barrel length, those are just expensive slugs that won't expand at the weight/speed right? They wanted over a buck a round. Then there were some 180 grained jacketed hollowpoints pretty close to a buck a round says 980 fps with no length for that speed, I kind of figured those might have a chance at expanding since they were 180 grains but neither had speeds listed so I figured both were around 700 fps range. Are either of those worth it for a hollowpoint? It just don't seem worth a buck a round for that.
>>
>>34056962
What does grain have to do with expansion?
Nothing.
>>
>>34057056
Yes it does. Lighter grained bullets have an easier time expanding. Lighter = more velocity = more expansion. I'm sure stuff is different than 20 years ago where it can go heavier but most of those heavier bullets have a lot more than 700fps pushing them. I don't see how it would expand at that speed and weight and not just act like a regular slug I've never seen any bullet around that weight/speed expand before anywhere.

Ok, if it's a Mauser, could be solid. Probably good to have a gunsmith check it out, but if he's been shooting it for years, should be a good buy. No collector value whatsoever, but it's a powerful rifle in a common caliber which should be accurate enough for range play and hunting.

For the most part, no. If you push your thumb up against the slide autistically hard you can cause jams. There are actually safeties designed with this technique in mind and they're quite common on 1911's.

>>34043529
Yes, more repeatable accuracy on the first shot (no massive lurch due to the bolt's mass flying forward) and shit doesn't go into your open bolt while you're carrying the gun around (after the dust cover you mention has been opened by firing) and you can safely carry in a ready condition without worrying about jarring the bolt free of the bolt hold but not engaging the sear thus causing an ND.

No. It doesn't take 10,000 hours to master any particular skill. If you already have a foundation, it might take 20 hours to make shooting non-dominant comfortable, meaning that it doesn't feel out of place, and doesn't require a great deal of mental effort to just pull off. It might take another 100 or so to be considered competent, or pretty good. It might take upwards of 500 hours to be great at it.

When a guns are broken they are sent to the arsenal and whatever usable parts are remade into working guns.

The stuck out serial is from the original rifle and the restruck number means it was matched to the new receiver.

I never understood the mechanical function behind this and would greatly appreciate it if someone could explain how exactly this works:

>slide locks back
>mag empty
>can't release slide simply by pulling it back a little further back on its own without actuating the slide lock
>release magazine, and can now release the slide if I pull back slightly on the slide, no actuation of slide lock required
>slide locked open, reload with empty mag, pull back on the slide, won't release without actuation
>slide lock open, reload with mag with even just one round, pull back on the slide, and it will release without actuation

How the hell does that work? I don't see any mechanical parts being touched or pressed or anything that changes how the gun should function with even just a single round in the magazine.

Why is it if I've got an empty magazine, I can't release the slide without fucking with the slide lock? Why is it if I reload with a locked slide, and using an empty mag, it still won't release if I don't mess with the lock? And what the fuck is going on to let the gun "know" there's a round in the magazine and that it's okay to release now? I've stared directly down into the chamber for half an hour now repeating the same steps trying to figure this one out. I can't see anything being touched by the round that is effectively functioning as a release.

I'm right-handed but left-eye dominant. Will I ever be able to practice both-eyes-open shooting?

Anyone have a .30-06 pump?
How do you like it?
Are the new Remington's okay or should I look for a used one?
>>
>>34071607
Extra weight to prevent parts wear, extra room for a longer recoil spring.
The p38's had slide cracking issues in endurance testing.
>>
>>34071677

My uncle has a Remington 7600 in .270 (also comes in .30-06) and its a sweet gun. Ive taken it hunting before and really liked it. It's a little heavy compared to a bolt gun, but theyre sweet shooters. I took a whitetail with a headshot at 65 yd with it, so its definitely plenty accurate
>>
>>34071702
That sounds awesome thanks for the input.

It's definitely going to be my next purchase I just haven't decided if I'm going with a new Remington or if a used discontinued model would be better. Leaning towards the Remington.

>>
>>34071760
Too bad they made the final product uglier. Getting sick of the whole "it doesn't have to look pretty" shit. It's possible to make a gun that looks good and fires well.
>>

>quietest unsurpressed centerfire

The traits that make a gun quiet are the opposite of the traits that make it good for HD. For HD you need a short weapon to be maneuverable, but a longer barrel makes the weapon quieter.

So get the weakest, quietest round you're comfortable with, in the biggest, longest firearm you think is suitable for HD. Bear in mind that you might have to use it in tight hallways and around corners and such.

A good recommendation is the Hipoint 995 pistol-caliber carbine. It's just what I described--a small round in a big weapon. It's not exactly quiet, but it won't destroy your ears like a rifle, and 9mm is a good HD round.

I will caution you against buying a post-cerberus gun, not because it will schoot any differently, but because the finish on pist cerberus guns is awful. I have 2 new production remington guns, a 597 (.22lr autoloader) and an 870 express in 12 ga, and the finish is awful on both. I live in GA (a pretty humid climater) and if I dont keep those guns covered in a layer of oil, they'll rust just sitting in their cases.

My dad's old 70's wingmaster, 1100, and r700 are all terrific, however. Even with worn bluing, Ive never had to take the same care with the finish on those weapons. The actions are also a lot smoother, which could just be due to wear, but it's something to consider.

Also, keep in mind my experiences with new remington guns is limited to guns I paid less than $400 for, brand new. I have heard that their higher end guns are held to better qc standards. However, if it were me, id buy pre-cerberus, mostly so I could get a blued gun.

What are the pros and cons between pistols which have adjustable sights and those that don't?
>>
>>34071843
No.
>>
>>34072093
Good to know, thanks. I don't live in a very humid area (I'm in cuck Jersey) but I would rather avoid a shitty finish since I do 90% of my shooting in the summer
>>
>>34072376
Pro: adjustability
Con: more expensive to make, extra parts to break/lose, usually are less conducive to smoothing/melting/making-less-snag-prone

Depends upon what type of adjustability you're talking about.

I am new to trying to buy a scope, but I am looking for one to put on my Remington 700, eventually I plan on reusing it. I was aiming for mil dot 6-24x being my only requirements as eventually I want to try very large distance target shooting and have heard that is the magnification range to go for that area. Most scopes I keep finding are like 100-200 dollars which tells me they are probably cheap garbage, so does anyone have any recommendations or personal favorites they use for long range target shooting?
>>
Hi /k/ need some help step dad's birthday is coming up and he loves guns but is a fudd has a m1911 and only buys guns from the US or old but good milsurp and he he is really cheap when it comes to ammo. What would be the best thing to buy oh yeah I'm Canadian so no automatics
>>
>>34074770
You could try finding a Walther P1 police surplus handgun, a bunch came in last year some dealers should still have them.

If not there's a shitload of surplus Beretta 92's that came in more recently.
>>
>>34074879
Ah shit forgot to mention I don't have pistol license so I can't buy one only rifles and shotguns
>>
I bought a Uberti Walker .44 cal and I love it. Though I've noticed when I load balls into the chambers, sometimes the loading lever will pull the ball instead of it staying seated. I'm using .454 right now, and they do get shaved when I seat them, but not a hole lot. Should I step up to .457?
>>
>>34074924
How about an old rem 870? maybe look for one of those cool wingmaster shotguns

Has 2 870's loves them also how much do wing masters go for?
>>
>>34074999
Sick trips. Also my mistake, wingmaster is just an offshoot of an 870, and used they should be roughly the same price. I'm not sure what to suggest, can you get a lever action .22? or maybe one in .44 mag?
>>

Yeah he has 1 leveraction and likes it think it's in .357 so I'll look for one in .44 mag thanks Anon.

I had nipple blow of my CVA muzzleloader.

I bought a replacement 6x11m nipple.

When I go to tighten it, it just spins and spins and spins, so I assume the threads on the barrel are shot.

I have a Thompson/Center 1/4" x 28 nipple.

Can I tap 6x11mm to 1/4" x 28 and fix the problem?

Just take a shotgun or rifle into the woods.

If you really have to go for a pistol caliber, I'd recommend 460 S&W.

So, I live in Illinois. I don't have my FOID card yet, but it'll be in soon. My question is, can I purchase a gun off Armslist.com from Missouri, then bring it back? And can I do it with my FOID card still in the mail, since it's a private sale and all?
>>
>>34076543
Interstate sales (determines by residency, not geograaphic location) need to abide by BOTH states laws. So you would still need an FOID. But if you pay cash, whose gonna know? Just don't get caught until you have your FOID, because I'm pretty sure you need that for possession, not just purchase.
