Don't go pencil, and no need to go 20". If you want a long barrel go 18" and build an SPR. There are some in between barrel profiles that are light, but not pencil light. Super light barrels won't hold up to heavy use. My barrel is a Faxon gunner profile. Not their pencil profile, but a step thicker.

There are tons of rail options. Lurk around and look at images.

Of course 20" is fine, but the meat of linear increase in muzzle velocity for added length drops off around 18". Consider this: Going from 16" to 18" nets more muzzle velocity than 18" to 20". Diminishing returns for the same increase in length. Shorter barrels are lighter, easier to maneuver and aim, plus look better.

He can get a 20", but I recommend an 18".

11.5" barrel for the same reasons as I posted above. That extra inch means that M193 will reliably frag within 75 yards. A 10.5" barrel doesn't reliably frag M193 at the damn muzzle.

Are you talking about the PSA CHF 10.5"s?
I would go 11.5" for the reasons I stated, and put a medium/short length flash hider or hybrid device on there. A2 grip had an 11.5" with a flash hider and my 14.5" with muzzle break was more obnoxious.

Shorter barrels have more report obviously. That extra inch is worth it I'm telling you man. A 10.5" with a KX3 or KAK flash can is just as long if not longer than an 11.5" with a reasonable flash hider, A2, or flash hiding oriented device.

An AAC Brakeout or a SI J-Comp are both around 1" shorter than a KX3. There is your extra inch.
I would suggest the Brakeout. Good combo device that is more oriented towards flash hiding, better for a short barrel.

I know the 10.5" are a good deal man but I'm telling you. Look up M193 (the most common 5.56 round in the world basically) velocities out of a 10.5". Then look up M193 fragmentation velocities.

Well I do use M193 for almost everything, but when actually hiking I usually roll with Gold Dot 64 grains

I'm in a bit of a conundrum.
For my first AR, im building a retro style M16A1 and I've found all the parts for it online (https://pastebin.com/BaQA7U1V).
It totals to about ~$1400, not including shipping, ammo, etc.
But I've now found a full repro going for about the same price.
