I need a real fuckin cheap T2
>>
>>33898938
I want a G3 type rifle.

I'm looking at the PTR-91. From what I've seen posted before it is the best option. But Karl does have a Century, and I can't help but at least consider the wisdom of the wehrboo.

Do help.
>>
>>33899580
Do you really wanna take battle rifle advice from a wehraboo who can't do simple operations with an FAL?

PTR-91 is the WASR of G3, just get that
>>

Ok. What else is out there and what should I know?

Thanks, didn't quite see that from the pic.

Would it be a better option to put the rail on myself or buy the R model?

Buy the R if you want an optic
>>

Get the PTR.

>>33900131
Like the other guy said, if you want to mount an optic, then go ahead and get the rail. There are several good detatchable rails for regular G3s but the pre-welded will be the best.
>>
>>33898938
Why don't most battle rifles have chome lined barrels?

Also, do I want FAL or PTR-91 for my first BR?

G3s couldn't have chrome lined barrels due to the fluted chambers.

Either one of those are great choices. See if you can finger fuck or shoot them both to see what you like better. I prefer the G3 but I'll build my FAL kit someday.
>>
>>33900131
Get the railed model. I have the PTR-GI and had to shell way more money than I wanted to for a good rail. I have buyers regret over not having a rail but I love everything else about the rifle.

It may not be the most ergonomic in the world but its a range toy so who cares? It breaks clay pigeons out to 300yds which is about the most I'll ever ask of it.

Guys I need help. My uncle's got a prob with his AR10B, the fucking handguards have started melting due to age (apparently).

We're not sure about the availability of replacements.

I've built an AR15 myself, so I am somewhat familiar with this thing. Should I tell him to swap the handguards (and potentially the barrel nut) for something new, or should we try to get different repro ones and shield them with heat tape?
>>
>>33901958
If you need them brown, it'll be harder to find. Aftermarket FF handguards are easy

I've got the TA11H. I've got a .223 BDC on mine, because I got it for cheap and have heard of a few others using the .223 BDC successfully out of the SCAR17's 16.25" barrel.

I don't know anybody not happy with their TA11s on their SCARs, whether they have the .308 or .223 BDC. I'd recommend it.

That being said, I'll likely trade this for one with a .308 BDC, just because I'd feel more comfortable with it. I feel weird with a .223 BDC, but beyond me just feeling weird, it has worked spectacularly.

I'd recommend it.

What are you using it on?

FAL

One of the neat things with FAL is DSA makes a special rail so the hole in the base of the ACOG lines up with the irons.

They also have nice reticles options and no batteries required, but they are overpriced. I always wanted one though.
>>
>>33908666
It's all perspective.

I thought things like Trijicons and Geissele triggers were overpriced for a long time. It took me taking a massive dive and getting a SCAR (for 2700, relatively cheap as far as SCAR17s go) to understand that I may be buying something expensive, but I won't have to buy it again.

The FAL may be a bit more forgiving on a lower end optic. The SCAR is notorious for beating the shit out of cheaper optics.
>>
>>33908956
Do you have a source for the SCAR beating up optics? I know a guy who uses a Strike Eagle on his 17 and has had zero issues for thousands of rounds. I'm not surprised considering how soft shooting it is. This is the only place where I see people talk about it.

I can't comment on Geissele, but ACOGs are objectively overpriced. There are better options as far as glass quality, variable power, etc., but it depends on if you want something that has been proven through military usage.

Damn, nice. I'm not sure if you want one or the other or both but I think I said before gunthings still has 75 dollar para lowers. He's also got a bunch of surplus fixed stock too. They're even easier than AR lowers. Lot of surplus parts though so make sure you have a file on hand. The locking plate was the one that gave me the most trouble with fitting

Aluminum, they're supposed to be a few ounces lighter than the steel ones but to be honest I don't even notice the weight shooting mine cause it balances out so well. I've got a thread on hiduminium on FAL Files where someone posted the weight comparison between surplus and DSA and it didn't impress me too much

Brad's are DSA blems though with cosmetic stuff, so if that bothers you it might be worth getting something else. I can't stand the finish DSA uses on anything desu

Whats your opinion on this companies "modern hunter"?

https://albertatacticalrifle.com/modern-hunter

Its rediculously expensive, but in canada it has a lot going for it. Its non restricted, accurate as hell according to them, and in .308 it could actually be used for hunting.

I really dont want to spend that much on a gun, so is there another rifle that meets those requirements that i just havent found yet?

My LGS is selling SOCOM 16 CQBs for $1,656.

I've been going back and forth between this, building an AR-10, and a PTR.

Should I go for it? This will mainly be shot at the range but may occasionally be used for pest control (hogs). Unlikely to ever be used for "proper" hunting, like deer.

Soooooo...some time ago you all may remember some stupid fucker who set out to build an FAL with a reciever wrench made from a mower blade.

What If i told you all that he ended up using a pipe wrench and vice?

And then subsequently succeeded at unfucking his reciever?

And then shot said FAL today, even though he didn't have a gas tube, and it worked perfectly fine except for having to cycle it manually because lolnogastube?

Anyone got some good sites for PTR stuff besides HKParts and RTG?

I got a whole laundry list of stuff I want to do with mine
>Got the Atlantic PTR GI a while back
>Only real regret is probably the rail, I should have spent the extra money on a railess+claw mount, doubt it'd be reasonable to remove from the sheet metal receiver though
>Replaced the front handguard with a wide one because fuck everything about the slim one, couldn't find any OD so I went with a black one (With bipod cut)
>Stock is too short for me, need to get a longer one without a doubt but most replacements seem to be about the same size, save for the Magpul $300 stock, also wary about the stability of the folding/collapsing ones. Converting to AR stocks just seems lame too
>German surplus bipod in the mail at least
>Try to put scope on rail, iron sights in the way so I use a 1 inch rail riser I had. Looks ridiculous and apparently I need something different because the screws on both the scope and riser kept trying to walk out as I fired
>Replaced charging handle with longer one, goddamn rubber grip on it tore off fairly quickly so I need a better replacement
Any suggestions on specific shit/places to get said shit?

Airshit community? I dunno. I used to go shooting airshit many years ago with a buddy who had a truckbed full of cases like this. I guess they might have been this brand, but he was dumb and spent a lot of money on pretend weapons. I have a 1720 in my room right now. It's fucking solid and heavy af. Fits perfectly in the back of my Jeep behind the driver's seat, sideways, afore the wheel wells. The buckles are thick and give a loud snap, it has an o-ring seal, is lockable, can be chained to the roll bar and can't be cut into like a fabric bag. I don't know of other brands, this is the one case I have and it fits all my guns. If airshitters are giving Pelican a bad name, I don't know what to tell you. I'm happy with mine.

Delayed roller is a very violent action that can handle any shitty ammo but is almost 100% uncontrollable in full auto. So the fal is a less violent action with more room for error.

So, I bought a PTR last year because I liked the aesthetics, the "battle rifle" aspect, and I had a visceral hatred of AR-faggotry. Right before the election I bought an AR in case things went south, and now I really like my AR better than my PTR. I have a kid on the way and my PTR is kind of just an expensive wall-hanger. In my state there aren't ranges that go past 200 yards, and .308 is fun but kind of expensive for my purposes(plinking at the range, home defense). Talk me out of selling my PTR and using the cash to pay down denbts /k/?

Their M-14's are cast, not sure about the BM-59 because there is a boatload of forged .308 garand receivers out there that they could use

I just can't justify the price. Especially since they used the heaviest BAR model as a base, instead of the lighted and shortened internals and body of the later models (like the last jungle one, and the FBI monitors).

The HCAR should be built on all that innovation if it is going to cost $4-5k.

It could have so much more going for it, besides "lol can use BAR mags and is just our base 1918 model fugged up.”

(Iraq vet)
Once I opened the box and assembled the gear I was actually satisfied with the clear sight and over all set up .
I started too not purchase this gear due too the reviews however I realized that some of the individuals probably have zero training on how too zero or actually use a sight some just buys them so there rifle looks cool without a actual purpose .....Read a manual it might help ! ! And remember paralax use a plane white back ground ..... Negatives a bit on the heavy which made the weapon off balance but I was able too fix that ..Also this product came in a few days which made my day.
Negatives I would say.
rare battery type .
Scope caps cheap doesn't seal .
Laser too long lacks options for logical placement. Overall the way the picture shows really is not a bad way too set the system up

Would you buy this VET APPROVED scope?
>>

Flash hider is wrong and wood stocks didn't have pads. Also the carrying handle should be at the top front part of the receiver
>>
>>33953770
The pictures in the Visual Encyclopedia of Firearms say that wood stocks had pads in some cases. Also, the carrying handle appears to be flipped down like that on several rifles I've seen around.

I know the flash hider is wrong. That and the shape of the stock are what's bothering me the most.

Never seen em. Austrians are the only ones who ever had rubber pads on their stocks as far as I know. And the carry handle attaches to the top of the receiver. Peep these cuts

If you wanna get autistic too most stocks had a cut in the top to allow the rear sight some clearance, they go about a half inch further back than the rest of the receiver

Scars eat Tons of shit for breakfast bruh.

It's how the recoil is distributed, Most optics can handle back ward recoil.

The scar sends recoil back and then forward, which brutal on shit that's not built for it, albeit most of the damage you'll see in a 'reasonable' time frame comes from full auto.

It'll take a while for a semi SCAR to show it's gnawing nature.

That's a cool post and all but I'm looking for a source or some data not just someone saying something on 4chan. I'm not even sure what you you mean is SCAR specific by "sends recoil back and then forward" since most semiautos tend to work best if they go back into battery after ejecting.
>>
>>33954457
To add to what you said, the SCAR uses a short stroke piston/rotating bolt. There's nothing particularly mystical or unusual about how it works compared to many other firearms. The impressiveness of it comes more from the materials used and construction than anything else.

Most 17S owners just don't shoot them that much. A few range trips a month at best, if that, and they pretty much always own more firearms than they shoot on any given range trip.

If you simply google the issue you'll find plenty of discussion regarding exactly what optics get beaten up and which ones don't. Apparently the Elcan holds up to it just fine. Go figure.

Furthermore, it's not a new phenomenon. G3 type rifles are also known to chew up scopes not built to handle the secondary impulse of that giant steel carrier slamming forward when another round is chambered.

What distance should I zero my PTR at?

I shot at 36 yards and 100 yards, and both distances seemed to put me and low and slightly left. (indoor range) I was using the 2 setting. I dont want to use the "2" for 200 yards.

Isnt 5.56 supposed to be zeroed at 36 yards? I cant figure out what the .308 equivalent is. Figured I'd just ask you guys before fucking with the rifle.

So let's google "SCAR 17 destroys optics."

http://fnforum.net/forums/fn-scar-17s/48910-error-net-myth-truth-scar-17-destroys-optics.html

https://www.ar15.com/forums/t_6_24/408532_Scars_eat_optics_.html

http://www.falfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=408314

These are just the first three results I got and there were several others pretty much in that same vein. The only thing that they seem to have in common is that there might have been problem in the military with some elcans (lol) and old eotechs that have batteries inline with the recoil, and that movement could cause contact issues. There is certainly nothing conclusive and this really seems like another case of the internet hearing a specific military rumor and deciding that it suddenly applied to everything. If you can provide some evidence more conclusive than a few random people having a optic break, I would really like to see it.

Me again, yesterday I did finally take it out and fire it for the first time in a while
For starters, I really should have bore-sighted instead of playing fast and loose, at 15 yards my shots were like 2 feet high, and I'm wondering if my scope's vertical adjustment even works

Bigger problem though, I was shooting cheap Tula ammo and I had several extraction issues (Round was sort of stuck on the bolt, only way to get it out was popping the stock off to relieve pressure on the bolt carrier and pulling it back)
3rd time it happened the bolt got knocked out of kilter or something and the locking rollers weren't releasing so I couldn't even get the bolt back in.
Already disassembled the carrier and about to start piddling with it, probably going to start by dropping it in my ultrasonic cleaner with some Simple Green
Any critical mistakes I might be making?
Should I take this as a sign to stop using steel-case with my PTR? Because I feel like it may be a good idea

Oh well, open wide here comes the yumyum train.
NATO ammo out of the 18" hk91 passes zero at 30m and 200m Zero at 30m using the 2 setting on the rest sight. You should be 2.5" to 3" high at a 100m

Not sure what to tell you then m8. I don't see anything obviously wrong. Dis you try any other ammo? PTRs should be able to eat steel like candy though. Give it a good cleaning then try again. If it's still fucking up give PTR a call. They'll take care of you.

On the bolt itself or the bolt carrier? Because the spring lever deal on the carrier is hard as fuck to push up enough to get the bolt in place.
In other news, the whole reason I did a full disassembly was because the rollers were stuck in a locked position, and now after cleaning and poking at it there's still stuck locked once I reassembled the BCG
Looks like I'll be learning the inner workings of this thing tomorrow

The BM59's are cast and not really that well made. Read up on BM59 builders comments on how they took shortcuts and cheapened the design just to get it out.
