Am I supposed to do the dry fit with the chamfered spacer in place, or do I do the dry fit without it and check that result against the wheel? Instructions are unclear and I'm about to get my duck caught in the ceiling fan.

I ask because if I use the chamfered spacer, I get a timing result that can't possibly--not even remotely--be correct

I can't say what Surefire recommends, but in my experience that's not the case.

Chamfered spacers are used when the machinist was too inexperienced to undercut the threads, leaving a rounded transition from the shank minor diameter to the shoulder. If the threads are undercut, then the shoulder is perfectly square to (and beyond) the minor diameter of the threads and no chamfered spacer is needed as there is no possible way for the muzzle device's major thread diameter to intersect the barrel.

I've never seen a threaded gun barrel that isn't undercut, so I've never needed to use a spacer. Surefire may recommend differently, but mechanically there is no need.

If I'm not mistaken, the Samson Evolutionshorty VFG will physically fit M-lok pattern even though it's not made for it. You would reverse the backer plate so the flat edge is against the inside of the rail.

I was going to buy one but I didn't like the idea of metal on metal for something that's meant to be grabbed and tugged on.

I can confirm that my Unity grips, which are made for Samson Evo and other hole-based handguards DO fit solidly on M-lok. But they are plastic and so are able to bite into the handguard a little harder without causing damage.

Fixed stocks are great on 20'' rifles. Of course, I shoot in a pink polo and Uggs so maybe they suck for people wearing thick clothing.
