>What's a good fixed blade self-defense knife? Moving to Chicago soon and I don't have the money to buy a gun and get a concealed carry permit

Having anything over 2.5 inches is illegal so if you get caught with anything over you could be in trouble.
>>
>>33750489
damn as a non American I find this really strange that you're allowed to carry a gun quite easily but you have such harsh knife restriction.
>>
>>33750589
It take alot to get a conceal carry license in illinois
You have to get a fire arm owners id card just to own guns, then you have to pay at least $300 and pass a course to get your cc license
I heard the course is easy, but it could take at least 4 months for everything
>>
>>33750589

Most of America is fine for concealed carry of both firearms and knives, provided you follow the minimum of bureaucratic bullshit to get the proper licensing.

Big liberalcuck cities like Chicago, Detroit, Denver, LA, NY etc. have shit laws that restrict a person's right to self defense for the fallacious narrative that legal civilian ownership of weapons increases crime, when studies have shown us the reverse is true.

Basically, the knife/gun restrictions in those large cities are a means to arrest or detain niggers, who perpetrate the vast majority of violent crime, and the fact that lawful citizens can't defend themselves is an unfortunate lesser evil in their eyes.

If you go anywhere remotely rural, literally nobody gives a fuck if you open or concealed carry, walk around with a large fixed blade on your hip, or what have you, provided you don't look like a fucking murderer. And even then, they'll only care enough to give you a wide enough berth for it to not be their business.
>>
>>33750641
yeah I know that there are some states where it's not as easy to get a cc license than others but even tho with a bit of money, some patience and an iq slightly above the average of the squid population it is feasible.
Where I live it is impossible to get a cc license even if we have one of the most permissive gun law in europe. But in the other hand knife aren't even considered as a weapon, and we can freely carry everything we want. For example I used to carry a knife since was 10 even when was going to school
>>33750722
damn thaht sound like paradise to me. Here in Switrzerland we were allowed to carry gun until 1999 but then it was banned. Yet some people are fighting to have that right back but I think that it won't change soon..

Woke up at 2am and ground my Svord Von Tempsky Bowie down, it is an early 3.5 - 4mm thick bladed one not the current 6mm thick one. I wanted a more original blade shape than the cliche clip style bowie.

Wish I had done it earlier, much more lively in the hand probally more utilitarian now as a stick knife.

Benchmade Griptillian.jpg
94KB, 1024x800px
I have a Benchmade Griptillian, not sure why I got one because I rarely use a pocket knife. I do like carrying one though, gives me some sense of security plus it can come in handy if you need to cut something. Feel like most people use it for their jobs, not saying I don't use it at my job sometimes but it's rare. I told myself I wanted a high quality knife, and after some research I figured either getting a Benchmade or Spyderco was the best option. A lot of people told me Spyderco was better, but Benchmade is more expensive, not that it means it's better though.

I know stores in my city don't really sell Spyderco as much as they sell Benchmades, and 3 guys in the knife shop said they all carried Benchmade knives as well. I wanted the mini-griptillian but they were sold out of it, my only issue with the griptillian is that it's quite large for a pocket knife. I don't mind the axis lock though, seems like I notice people prefer a linear lock to an axis lock though. Also I'm not sure if Spyderco or Benchmade has better steel? Everyone raves about VG-10 steel or SV30 steel, but I've read the steel in a griptillian is equal to VG-10 steel so I guess you can say they're equal.

Honestly I'm thinking of buying a Spyderco, either a Delica 4 or a Paramilitary 2. Everyone LOVES the Delica and Paramilitary 2, but I always see more praise for a Delica and I'm not sure why. Is it the steel? Or just the design? I read Benchmade is the top knife manufacturer but Spyderco seems to be more popular among consumers.
>>
>>33757062
As far as the paramilitary goes, it's edge geometry and ergonomics way outperform the delica.
Actually the Delica used to have a saber grind until they updated it to a full flat grind like the PM2. I'm fairly certain the popularity of the para2 influenced this.
As steel goes, benchmade prefers 154 CM which is a fine enough steel. Spyderco prefers VG-10 for the delica, which is a close equivalent of 154 CM, but in my opinion is better. But the para2 has to have the best steel of the 3.
S30V is a great performing steel, and its leagues above the other too.

Honestly I'm not sure where you heard about the delica being more popular than the para.
Possibly you've heard more praise because it's a comparatively inexpensive knife to the para2? But the paramilitary is definitely the better of the two.
>>
>>33751440
Don't listen to the other faggots I like your modification. Way better, reminds me of a good fighting knife I used to own.

Spyderco is overrated in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, they are solid knives but G10 and VG-10 is questionable at $100+. Especially with how competitive China is getting with their costs and materials. I've also had some quality control issues with the Chicago model I own. Even after taking it apart and tinkering with it it's still not a smooth knife. Doesn't change performance but when you take into account Ontario makes the RAT series as smooth as they are for $25 it makes you think. I haven't handled a Paramilitary though so who knows, but personally I like Benchmade a lot more.

You're right, attaining a high enough temperature isn't super challenging, but attaining an accurate temperature so that you actually cause specific changes to the shape of the atomic lattice is a bit tough. Making this part easy means using 1040 carbon steel because it hardens at the curie point, where steel becomes non-magnetic, so to check the temperature accurately all you do is check it with a magnet. When the whole knife isn't magnetic, quench it.

I used 1095 carbon steel which hardens a bit hotter and I just guestimated it by going heating a minute past the curie point. It seems kinda hard I guess.

>>33758503
First off, FRN and G-10 feel a lot nicer than run of the mill "plastic", at lest imo. And they are very well made, significantly higher quality control. they last a long time if maintained, not to mention they are using far superior blade steel than a run of the mill gas station knife.

They do have an odd look. Spyderco knows this, they always talk about the concept of being "designed in the dark", in other words, function before form.

I'm not claiming they are the best, or even always the best value, but they are one of my favorite brands. I own (have owned) quite a few, ranging from $15 to $250.

>>33758523
I love my Al Mar Eagle... That being said, I don't think it's worth $210 at lest for most people. There are far more functional knives, that are almost as well, if not as well, made for less. If you do get one though, make sure to get a flat ground blade, the Talon design (bayonet grind like mine) is not that good for edc tasks.

>>33758682
I second this (>>33759129), Spyderco is not the only company to sell very expensive, well made, knives that don't feel quality (unless you are into knives and know what to look for), because of how light they are. Look at my pic related. The Al Mar (blue) is stupid light for it's size, and the Spyderco (being solid Titanium) is actually pretty heavy in pocket. There is only a $25 difference between the two.

>>33764049
No, I've always liked small and thin knives and have been eyeing one for awhile now but it just happened to take a backseat to other things. Recently I have been picking up a lot of knives that are no longer in production out fear of supply drying up and I didn't know the status of the Al Mar knives since they are kind of on the more obscure side of things and not as readily available as say a Paramilitary or 940.

I do watch Nick's reviews from time to time but mostly just for fun as I find most of his criticisms largely personal preference.

You're supposed to hold down the lock while using the thumb stud? Hand honestly isn't big enough to do that.
>>
>>33767495
no, i mean for closing. The one axis lock I have can be kind of sticky unless pulling it on both sides of the handle.
>>
>>33767528
The issue is that the lock sticks a bit when I begin tugging down. As in when I start to close it, there's a bit of extra force I have to pull on the lock before it starts to begin closing normally.

That's if I use the thumb stud compared to the other methods I mentioned.

Would a small cheap dremel be enough to get into Opinel blade modding?
>>
>>33764415
How's the axis lock ripoff?

I have a Ganzo and it's really stiff, you can't just push the lock and have the blade fall to close the knife like the Benchmade's.
>>
>>33769336
Different anon. I don't have a ganzo but I have heard various answers. From what I gather the quality control on them is about what you'd expect for a $20 chinese ripoff, in that they come out so differently they're almost different knives. So sometimes you get ones that are glassy smooth, and other times you get ones that are 2-handed openers. Try adjusting the pivot and adding lube on yours, it might help.
>>
>>33768536
SAK's are well built but they always use shit steel and the tools aren't very good.
I'd say go for a regular pocket knife, and if you need a multi-tool, get a Leatherman or carry an interchangable bit screwdriver.
As for pocket knife suggestions in the UK, anything non-locking and no fixed blades (ie slipjoints or friction folders) under 3" should do the trick. I highly recommend the Spyderco Roadie, Pingo, and UK Pen Knife (aka UKPK). Some of them come in different steels, too, so do some looking. Spyderco is likely your best bet because they are relatively cheap and well made for the price.
Alternatively, you could go for a traditional folder (a slipjoint that looks older) like GEC or Northwoods but those are harder to find and more expensive.
>>
>>33767098
Maybe. But I'd argue that their products are better made than the Glocknade. And they have better ergonomics and a wider range of products.
>>
>>33763250
Could have done better but also could have done worse. Buck's quality is still tip-top, but their material choices are lower-end/outdated, so unless the steel is S30V and under $70, then you likely got ripped.
Those holes in the scales and the jimping on the spine won't be fun for chopping.

They say it's 420hc and I got it for 40 at walmart when it says 80 on their site, so I'd like to say i didn't do so bad. The jimping is actually not so bad compared to some other Gerber and kershaw folders I've used. I guess is there any way for me to change out the rosewood scales? The model they have on their site had black synthetic and it looks like it may be way more comfy for chopping. Either way, it looks like the model i got is different form the model they have online. Is there any way to know if the steel isn't actually 420hc? it definitely feels lot more grainy and it sharpens differently frmo my old 420hc folders.

that's the msrp, every company does this. you would be retarded to ever to pay half of the msrp on any production knife. msrp is like a "basis" that manufacturers list to show the material cost and man hours and stocking cost.
>Is there any way to know if the steel isn't actually 420hc?
if it's Buck Knives, it's 420HC. they claim to be the best there is when heat treating 420HC, and nobody has ever had to call them out on it. 420 sucks, 420HC is not bad. it's on the softer side for blade steels, about as strong and tough as 1045 but Buck's heat treat stacks it up with the modern stainless competition easily. think as good as 440B, 8Mov, AUS-8. it's a fine steel and extremely resistant to blood and water. but I corrosive resistance is kind of a joke if you have some tuff cloth..

lastly, keep the rosewood, the black G10 wont make it feel nicer in hand. overall you got what you paid for, a nice knife worth 40 bucks (hehehe)

esee 5 if you must. the esee6 is to large for daily chores and to small for chopping. the esee 5 is extremely think, it was designed for people that want to baton their knives. because of its thickness, it will have shit poor geometry for cutting. I'd go for the esee-4 if I had to pick an esee knife

>>33771709
get it as a gag. but dont expect it to be any good. D2 is superb steel that is notoriously difficult to heat treat. if its being sold at that price I would bet that the heat treat sucks. a nobody company with an axis lock for 20 bucks in D2 is too good to be true.
>>
>>33771460
>What'll that 420HC do that the cro-van can't and vice versa
as for steels go, the 420HC is one of the most corrosive resistant common blade steels out there save for 2 (N680 and H1, these are steels to go scuba diving with), both (buck's)420HC and 1095 are tough steels that take a bretty good wear. the 1095 will rust pretty quickly but that's not a problem in the slightest with some preventative maintenance, see tuff cloth. both are about equal I would assume, the 1095 might hold an edge better but that wont matter, they're outdoor knives. they'll have to be sharpened about the same rate. I'd say Buck's 420 and Ka-bar's 1095 are both decent steels.

what's more important is the shape. your knife >>33763250 is going to be harder to sharpen because of the recurve so get some Lansky Crock Sticks.

I'd say you have a better knife now than what you lost. It should suit you very well.
>>
>>33771778

Always have it appraised first. A lot of antiques are ruined by people trying to "preserve" them.

Like >>33776158 said, just prevent further degradation with some mineral oil, or if you have some, Renaissance Wax is spectacular.

If you have it evaluated, and you don't care about it's value, then sure, you can clean it up.

Kind of a hot topic/meme amongst Spyderfags.

So my Boker Tuxedo Kwaiken is one of my favorite knives. It was a BladeHQ exclusive, I remember staying up the night it was going to be put up for sale, and refreshing the page every 5 minutes till it was up. I ended up getting #0070.

The action was starting to get a bit gummy, and it was not closing all the way (problem with internal stop pins). So it was time to take it apart and clean it up, something I've put off for a long time, because it's one of the most complicated manual knives one can get.

So anyways, here is the process.

Taking the first liner off very carefully. The stop pin, pivot (T8), and backspacer pin are tight on the liner, you have to "pop" it out, at the risk of sending the IKBS bearings flying. Luckily they are stuck in a thicker grease.

And finally putting everything back together.
I used 85 weight oil in the bearing track on the blade and dropped the bearings in 1 by 1 with tweezers. The heavier oil makes them stick in place. You have to put them in the blade and then lower the blade onto the scale.

This is the hardest part.

>>

A lot of what you're paying for is the name, same with BM and Spyderco. Even when I had money to burn Sebenzas didn't appeal to me but I can see why some people would like them, as far as pocket jewelry goes they're pretty damn good.

Some pocket jewelry is fugly and often has stupid blade geometry to boot. The pocket cleaver fad from a while back exemplified that.

Are inox Opinel a bitch to open if the blade gets wet/dirty?

Also not sure if getting a regular one or the garden edition with spear point.
>>
>>33781116
The blade isn't the concern, stainless or not. It's the wood that you have to worry about, and even then it's not like it'll fall apart or swell the moment it gets wet. If you want to neglect your knife get something with a plastic or metal handle. Consider blade style a matter of aesthetics, you're not going to be stabbing anyone with an Opinel.

He does not need to post his, this is a know "feature" of the Sebenza. Chris Reeve has talked about how he runs his s35vn soft for the sake of "ease of sharpening".

Which is fully retarded. It's like buying a 600hp performance car, and limiting it to 150hp for "ease of driving".

He was running it so soft that not only was edge retention horrible (for s35vn), but it did not have good edge stability, as shown by Jdavis in some of his rope cutting videos.

They have since increased the hardness by 1 or 2 to address the edge stability problems. The new ones (past few years) now have an acceptable heat treat, but it's still very soft.

I question why "ease of sharpening" is even in debate. We are talking about s35vn, not a high carbide steel like M4, it's easy to sharpen even at proper temper. And if you buy a $410 (base large) knife, you should be able to at lest sharpen s35vn, or afford to send it back (out) for sharpening.

Don't mind pic related, that's just a Ti frame lock with s35vn, with a proper heat treat, steel insert, and ball bearings, made in America, to 99% of the same tolerances, for more than half the price.
>>
>>33781809
Does it escape you that you're pretty much bitching at me for not trusting everything I see on 4chan? People dickride them as a meme, it wouldn't surprise me that people would also do the opposite, especially if the specific issue is left nebulous. Too soft and too hard have way different results.

>>33781871
>Chris Reeve has talked about how he runs his s35vn soft for the sake of "ease of sharpening".

Yeah, that's a salty faggot if I've ever seen one. People who do "actual work" often need to open their knives with one hand and that's why practically every production knife comes with a device that allows you to do so.

Then again maybe that's an ironic post and Poe's law is at work here.
>>
>>33784154
You can open a knife with one hand without anything like those. You press on the side of the blade and rotate it. I can even do it with my shitty $10 folding knife, so you can definitely do it with a fancy ball bearing knife.

But it's not easier, it requires literally no more effort than to just put your thumb on the side of of the blade, it requires no more practice, it requires nothing more than what is already there. The only one that I can see be easier is a knife with a flipper, that's halfway towards button press, and as I said the spyderhole does have a purpose, for people wearing fuckhuge gloves and don't have finger dexterity.

If it slices way worse that the first time you got a shitty steel. I did this with some that krupp steel coldsteel is using.

Note: if the knife doesn't cut paper in the first place, try putting the edge with an angle on your fingernail, if it slides off, you got a dull knife man.

But on the other hand, i know people who use their victorinox since 10+years and never sharpened it and it still works for them. You just have to find your way in the world of steels, heath threat and sharpening.

Benchmade's Axis was the first well known mechanism like that, so they're often referred to as Axis locks despite Axis being exclusive to Benchmade.

>SOG
I would avoid SOG. The Flash and knives in that price range are okay, but they haven't been the same since selling out to China.

If you really want to pay as little as possible, you can get one of those Ganzo knockoffs. They're cheap and okay for the price, but they aren't as strong as a proper Axis-type lock.

Unfortunately there aren't going to be any Benchmades with an Axis for less than $60. You might find a used one for less than $60 on Bladeforums, eBay, or /r/ knifeswap.

The cheapest new one I've found is a Presidio 522 going for $73, granted I didn't look very hard.

Most of their new stuff this year is from the US and Japan and looks quality at least. I still think their VG-10 stuff is overpriced but you could say the same about Spyderco. $180 for S35VN autos seems more reasonable though.

Well it's kinda hard to pick one though. The "Laguiole" brand was registered by a literally who, who now exploits the name to sell anything, from shitty chink knives to slippers, and long prevented genuine Laguiole knifemakers from using the name at all. Then there's been an assault of chink sellers pretending to be genuine Laguiole knifemakers. Then some genuine Laguiole knifemakers with a good reputation started selling chink shit themselves "but with good QC". Today 99% of the Laguioles you find are chink shit.

It also remains a pretty shitty knive desu, considering the edge hits the spring when it closes, and it's actually by design. So either you pay extra from some knifemakers to get one with extra space for the edge, or you get an "authentic" one and the blade gets dull pretty quickly.

The reputation of Laguioles has always been kinda exaggerated. I mean knifemakers from Laguiole sure used to make beautiful knives, but they've always been shitty knives, and there are so many more knifemakers in France.

I have a ganzo switch blade too. I'd recommend ganzo to anyone short on money and wanting knife. It doesnt save new age super steel but the steel it has isnt bad

If you almost shroud the tip with your finger I'm sure you could guide her in.
But you probably don't have much experience at guiding it in

any higher is not needed for actual utility function. if you want to put a razor edge on the knife get the DC4 Fallkniven and be gentle

>I'm paranoid about losing my fingers.

Why?

Plenty of people use folding knives with no lock whatsoever. My first knife was a multitool that had no lock on the knife and considering all the dumb shit that I did with it I think it's safe to say that not having a lock isn't any sort of real risk.

I guess if you're stabbing someone with a folding knife you'd want a locking blade but then I'm not sure that the type of lock matters all that much so long as the knife is decently made. Pic related doesn't have an axis or tri-ad but I'd trust it to hold up to shanking someone.

Guys, I'm kinda new to this thread, I'd like to know if you have some general list of brands that have the best price/value ratio for every price range. If that's even possible, because I know quality can vary wildly for many brands.

I'm looking to get a well-built folder for EDC, main priority for me are perfectly reliable and fitted lock and pivot point, and I'd like to know at least what brands to check.

sanrenmu

Ontario rat 1 or 2 based on your size preferences
Crkt and kershaw are too relatively cheap companies although are often made in china(not the biggest deal but many dislike that), Ganzo are pretty good and sanrenmu (these two arent the BEST quality but they'll do you for edc purposes)
