Current pertinent discussions:

Future DOTM? May is Dot Torture, but we are always open to input.

Alternative/auxiliary shooting test/drills qualifiers to run unofficially: Due to the diversity of contributors some of us will burn through our posts much fast, in an effort to keep contributions high, WITHOUT flooding the DOTM with posts from a loud minority, we are always encouraging submitting alternate drills that can be run for fun and discussed, including more "dynamic" drills that involve drawing from concealment/holsters and movement.

Reposting some pasta from the tail end of the previous thread:

OK so I I wanted to prelude this post with saying thx for being the inspiration to push out to the 50.

There was some frustration involved, but with a little bit of self rationalization, dry fire deductive problem solving and technique experimentation I was able to get on target and get a rough understanding of hold overs at that range.

1) THANK GOD - at 50 yards I've passed the parabolic arc and the gun has basically a "combat hold" IE: Bury what you want to hit behind the dot.

2) The big solution to my shots drifting left and off target was a bit of ball and dummy work - for some reason on the LEM trigger I have a harder time not pushing down and left, with the FNS guns heeling was my common problem.

3) The solution to the anticipation wasn't zen like control, but rather a brute physical band-aid, taking advantage of the WML ledge and using increased grip strength with the support hand and more thumbing to the left with the support hand thumb to counter the low left jerk.

Run down of the vertical - the first pictured group without call-outs or labels group is the low-left 4 shots with one pushed off the cardboard, hold over on that was top of the sights flush with bottom of the target. (this is also when I figured out I had to thumb much harder)

Then I moved up to combat holdover burying the circle and thumbing the gun a lot more, magic started to happen. 2 strings of 5 shots each and I was content with my understanding of the hold.

Final image is a 10 shot string with counted and marked shots, not exactly pumped about the spread but the cadence is good for me and they are all on target. I now have a foundation for 50 yard shooting, I have a feeling if a do a bit more of this it's really going to buff up my 25 yard stuff for this qualifier.
>>
>>33512536
25 yards is gonna be a stretch for me, I've never shot pistols past 50 feet unless it was my silhouette gun, a Contender (which is done prone).

Man, you really need to pick up a suppressor when you get to a more permanent residence, sounds like it would be a blessing.
That said, you're pushing through it well, so maybe it's not a bad idea to just macho man past your limitations? Fuck mental issues, they're all in your head!
(Not making light of the tism, my brother is handicapped, just saying youre better off than most so maybe some testicular fortitude is the cure)

This test is great for finding the edge of your ability to put shots exactly where you want them.
I really need to bust out some FAST tests, I'm slacking in the practical shooting department.

>>33511537
>thx for being the inspiration to push out to the 50.
Literally what I do, further/smaller/faster! And I try to drag as many people as possible along with me. So thanks for joining the ride, it's fun to have company.

Nice to see you're getting dialed in on your new guns! That's some respectable shooting, I'm glad the POI worked out for you at 50, my new sights on the USP45 have the exact same hold.
The more you shoot out at 50-100 the easier this dinky 25yd stuff is, I wish I could share some of my youtube stuff with you without getting fucked with but I have two videos of me fucking around at distances of 100+

Thanks m8, I've won my division in this event every year for 7 years straight. This year I took high over-all as well by 3 hits though, kinda proud of that.

>LAX is covering me for the 2.5k rounds I had to send back
Story?

I had a "man can" of 115 factory new and a additional case of 1k 124 reloads that had a serious issue. I got through about 700 of the 115 before it showed, but the primers were blowing out of the back of the cases and the cases were expanding in the chamber becoming lodged, requiring a field strip and my knife to remove them.

So after a range day with that issue I switch to the unopened 124 reloaded in house stuff and immediately the same issue.

I had shot almost 1k out of these 2.5k rounds by this point - the majority of it the 115 new in box stuff as it had been fine for a while.

Well these returns and testing take time, and that was most of my shootan ammo....

But they are going to completely cover me, and are shipping straight up 2.5k of 124 browning ball, should be here tues/weds - hence finally cutting loose and blowing through my meager ammo stash scraps the last week. Still poor as fuck from the transition to HKs

>I've always not gave a fuck about stance simply because standing and balancing is something we do naturally.

You would be right about this in a gun fight
Only mostly wrong in practical shooting
But boy you are DEAD wrong about bullseye.

If your body is under torsion you will naturally pull the gun left or right and that is VERY bad.
I posted a guide in the last thread. >>33497467
>>
>>33513384
>yup, i love they way it feels and shoots.
Could you do me a huge favor? Could you measure from the top of your slide directly in front of the rear sight to the base of a 15 round mag? And then from the top of the rear sight to the absolute lowest hanging part of a 15 round mag?

And that wolf is 100% what is causing those issues.

Reposting the glock run. Got a 198 which is a decent improvment to my 140. I might give it another go, but that'll depend on funds. I'm really digging the 12lbs trugger. Shot my friends G19 and was laughing about how easy the 5.5lbs trigger is after using my G22.
>>
>>33513389
I guess in that sense it's just so low on my priority list that it doesn't work in to my active thought process. Maybe one day I'll reach the level where I can actively focus on the mechanics of my body below the torso - but for the moment I have bigger fish to fry! I'll just stand square and comfortably or blade comfortably and walk, depending on need.

what's the story on the fn pistol problems? was it just that one guy on /k/ that had a problem and made a bunch of threads?
>>
>>33513860
I was using "Checks every box" as a kind of backhanded compliment. The gun was designed for consumers, not combat, so it has to look good on a spreadsheet and last just long enough to get put in the night stand and ignored.

Which is a shame, because it really is a nice looking pistol and it could have been the best .45 on the market if it wasn't for waffle jews being jews.

Still a perfect range gun though.
>>
>>33513889
Whelp, I'm the "one guy" and I still do love the gun design...

But your lifetime warranty ends if you don't send it to an FNH certified armorer every 2,000 rounds, it also ends if you do anything deeper than a field strip.

I was also told- directly - that my gun that had 16,00 rounds through - and was paying for the slide to be replaced - would "continue to have failures if I continued to shoot it". essentially the armorers at FNH considered my entire gun bricked at 16k rounds and felt it would be in my best interest to scrap it and buy a new one.
>>
>>33513889
Can't have everything I guess.

That 'guy' is the person you just quoted, and despite his failings in social interaction most of the threads weren't him.
The issue I had was FN flat out saying "Yeah, 16,000 rounds is a little much for these guns" and not honoring a 'lifetime' warranty. Which makes sense if 16k is past what they consider the life of the gun, that's totally okay, but I'm not buying a gun with 1/10th the life span of a Glock

>The mandatory 2000 round service interval is bullshit as well
>>
>>33513930
>"continue to have failures if I continued to shoot it".

>>
>>33513930
>>33513951
oh, well i never send guns in for repairs and i voided my warranty when i started removing material from the frame to get the mags to drop free.

i love the gun but it clearly has some issues and there is no aftermarket for it.

i'm only at 3 or 4k so i've got a ways to go and as long as the only thing that fails are some springs, i'm good with it.

fn really does need to learn to support their products and test them more before releasing them.

no?

It was a phone call I received on my ext at work from Scott at FNH as a follow up apology/pitch to buy a new gun after the initial lunacy that took place. ]

It was really surreal too.

send it in or find a local certified armorer, create a track record of repair so they can't bone you. That's the only thing I can suggest.

Just got back from a 2 day Tom Givens pistol class. Shit was fucking B O M B
>lessons on shootouts like the FBI Miami shootout, Dinkheller's murder and some other examples
>a bunch of mindset stuff
>doing casino drills
>one handed shooting drills with both hands
>going head to head with a similarly leveled student on a dueling tree
>talked with a good number of skilled and knowledgeable students that were also instructors

The one takeaway from that class was Tom's idea of misses being a waste of time when that time could have been spent on getting a well enough sight picture and trigger press. Learning how to slow down or speed up relative to the distance of the target was also a big one.

If any anons have a spare $500 to spend, definately take a class from a quality instructor. For fucking reals.

That is a HUGE thing in steel challenge.

>>33514153
Two questions
>How fast were you shooting?
>Can you greentext to me what you were doing and thinking about while shooting?

From the target alone I'd say you were looking at tge paper not your front sight and flinching, but the target is not a lot to go on.
>>
>>33514153
>>33514169
Understand that it is VERY difficult to diagnose a shooter when you aren't a good enough instructor/shooter to know what to look for. Amplify this by 5x when you aren't seen actually shooting it or how your grip is and a whole number of factors.

If you want to get better do the following
>read this

https://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?7708-Dry-Practice-Misconceptions-Updated-12-04-16

>do lots of structured dryfire (emphasis on structured)
>get a good pair of quality sights that work with your eyes

If you incorporate dryfire into your practice, I promise you, you WILL improve and you WILL see the improvements. Dryfire is boring as fuck but it is absolutely worth it when you're finding out that you can actually shoot what you're aiming at most of the time.
>>
>>33514366
One shot every 2-3 seconds in general, thinking back was focusing more on grip and trigger pull than anything, especially having most of the pressure for my grip come from my support in hand, keeping my right hand as high on the grip as possible, and trying to follow through on the trigger pull.
>>
>>33514419
>

Yeah, intend to get some formal lessons eventually. Next range trip will be with a friend and hopefully he'll record some shots
>>
>>33514153
>assuming you're right-handed
You're squeezing your whole hand down on the gun, and pushing the whole gun. While this in and of itself is a (minor) problem, it leads to cramming too much meat stick on the trigger and pushing it further (a major problem).

I have NFI why that one that's ~6" high right off by itself happened other than you simply weren't on the sights, or someone else shot your target.

The two hits to the right ~1.5" but vertically centered were sight alignment.
>>
>>33514439
So, with the caveat that >>33514419 is 100% correct and you should take this with a grain of salt, here is my $0.02

>Your second target is starting to drift left
>Your spread is somewhat consistent
>If what you are saying is true it isn't likely solely a grip or trigger issue

I would say the first things you should work on are learning to focus on the front sight and forming a good sight picture. I'll put a couple videos here to help, I think you are too focused on yourself and not the path of the bullet. You also need to dry fire more to help combat any flinch you might be developing.
>I mean dry fire between magazines on the range, dry fire at home, dry fire dry fire dry fire

Definately do it. I'm this anon >>33514173 and while students didn't get individual attention at the class, there are plenty of instructors that keep their classes small in order to individually diagnose every student correcting their grip and the way they manipulate the trigger and whatnot.

One instructor that does this that I can think of from the top of my head is Ernest Langdon. From what I hear, he is able to go student to student and adjust his instructions based on the student's skill level then adjust it again as he moves on.

If you want, set up an account on Pistol-Forum and learn as much as you can. They have a plethora of non-shitty people that have a genuine interest in bettering themselves and one another in pistol shooting and it's one of the very few not shit gun forums on the internet. Almost nobody there is pretentious, you don't get picked on for being new and the moderators aren't faggots that flag you if you say something they don't like or agree with provided that you aren't trolling.

Plenty of well known subject matter experts like Tom Givens, Wayne Dobbs, Darryl Bolke, Craig Douglas, DocGKR, Ernest Langdon and LE dudes post there very frequently. They even have a thread on posting videos for others to critique on.

https://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?24218-Video-Review-Thread

Posting in this thread will do you more good than posting it here quite frankly.

That depends entirely on the objective, trying to release the trigger to reset under recoil is rettarded for a new shooter or for bullseye shooting. Get you "any hit counts" 3-gun shit out of here

Completely fucking wrong. Do you also think teaching a new shooter how to shoot rapidly is a bad idea?

>or for bullseye shooting.

Last I checked, this thread is geared towards practical/defensive shooting and the way you work a trigger does not matter whether or not you're out on the street or at a competition. Better fucking get a refund from my Tom Givens class considering he taught this same exact thing, I thought I was paying money for a defensive pistol class but fuck if I know.

Really it would be better if we had more average and below average shooters participate. Us 260+ guys are going to do our own theng regardless because most of us got to this point by being competitive. DOTM should be built on the joe average.

I will agree that you must get a new shooter to shoot accurately and have a strong understanding of the fundamentals but who says you can't move onto something like a bill drill right after they're finished with it? This is probably where the confusion was from. I am not saying a new shooter must be told to hose a target down before working on things like proper grip, front sight focus and trigger control.

I've seen plenty of new shooters do such things on their first range trips from time to time. It's not impossible for a new shooter to get 6 fairly quick hits on a 6 or 8 inch circle at 7 yards on their first time out shooting. Feel free to berate me, use ad hominems or call me a faggot, I really don't mind.
>>
>>33515721
It came across exactly as that. You flat out said proper follow through was a bad habbit. I know that may not have been your intention, but you sounded like a boot marine telling people how to bar fight after a few hand to hand classes in basic.
There is a skills building progression that new shooters should go through, you don't skip step 3 because step 9 is cooler and faster.

Now new shooters need to be able to have some fun, I always let them shoot a mag at whatever speed or distance they want by the end of the day, but you dont TEACH them speed shooting because they will want to focus on it instead of the fundamentals. Holding the trigger to the rear is an important part of this, forcing new shooters to slow down and exaggerate actions because they aren't muscle memory yet is for safety and foundation building, THEN you teach them to start resetting faster and more fluidly. How tge fuck will you teach someone how to reset a trigger if tgey don't know what it feels like because it was masked by recoil every time?

I have a very hard time believing your instructor would disagree with me on this.
>>
>>33515721
Hey, uh.. I know I'm being a real asshole here, and I'm not apologizing for it, but some explanation of why...

This thread is going to attract a lot of really truly NEW shooters, people that haven't learned even the basics of sight picture yet, and you are talking about stuff that is really for intermediate shooters. My issue is that you could unintentionally cause training scars and bad habits with those guys, and I take new shooters early skill development very personally. That's why I'm flat out attacking you, to discredit you and (hopefully) call into question your advice as absolute. Coming straigt from a wiz-bang class can give you word a lot of weight to people that don't know better and that comes with responsibility you should acknowledge.

Also, where's your target? We're just shitting up the tgread going back and fourth here

True, but it's a pack gun that can have potentially as light as a half-pound trigger pull with no takeup or creep or overtravel (mine's ~14oz currently), that's capable of sub-MOA 5-shot groups. They're also RELATIVELY inexpensive, with a G2 running about $450-500 used and replacement barrels being in the $180-220 range depending on caliber.

Plus being able to use rimfire and centerfire in the same frame is pretty neat.

The desire to improve is the most important characteristic you can posses, good on ya.

Get some snap caps and do the "ball and dummy" drill.

https://pistol-training.com/drills/ball-dummy-drill

For me additional things I do:

Make sure my trigger finger is positioned so that it is driving the trigger straight back and not apply pressure to the left or right side.

I use my support thumb to aggressively push on the frame of the gun and to the right to fight micro anticipation of the recoil.

Try to shoot at the apex of your breathing.

Make sure you have a very positive high tang grip with as much purchase on the gun as you can muster.

Squeeze with both hands right until the point where you shake - then back off a little.

Focus on the front sight and repeat in your head "press the trigger to the rear" over and over while adding incremental more force.

While not ALL shooting requires the break to come as a surprise - in the beginning and for shooting groups - yes you want the gun to literally surprise you when it goes off, use the above technique to achieve this.

Use the isosceles stance, on the balls of your feet, bent slightly forward but comfortable. Don't lock your elbows, also rotate your elbows slightly up to apply more grip strength higher up on the gun.

There's a lot more to be said, but I'm out of gas for the moment.

Well, considering it was specifically designed for bullseye shooting, which is done 1-handed under either no or very generous time constraints (thus allowing as close to perfect sight alignment as the shooter is capable of), it's appropriate for what it was designed for.

>>
>>33538912
A Redding 2 that does't like to dampen and a $50 digital that won't calibrate correctly anymore. The Lee came in a kit and I never used it because I assumed the other two were better. When the digital started acting up, I dusted it off and found that it was actually quite good, especially for the price. My setup is budget oriented, but with careful technique I'm producing ammo that is cheaper and more consistent than factory.

I'm using the plated bullets to alleviate leading issues caused by factory cast bullets (Hornady and HSM) that aren't compatible with my revolver.

An electric scale/dispenser is pretty fucking high on my "must have" list. I just can't decide which one is best.

Also on the reload i would recommend bringing the gun to whatever "workspace" position you use as soon as the empty mag is free. You kind of let your support hand grabbing the mag pace the movement of your strong hand.

>>
>>33541024
that's not exactly what i was getting at
at the moment right after you hit the slide stop you do this weird upwards and backwards motion before presenting the gun again.

i would also posit that gabe is unusual in that his own experimentation suggests no difference in reload speed whether he looks down or doesn't look, which is not true of most people. Also when he drops the mag and moves the gun to receive a new one, he very deliberately holds the gun so that the mag is straight up and down and can fall free easily, then once the mag is free immediately moves the gun to receive a new mag. You're kinda floaty on the reload and you can cut out a little time there.

ymmv this is free internets advice

also looks like you have a bit of wobble during recoil from leaning back so much

it is if you want to do load development for competition or if you're a really high volume shooter. plus if the political atmosphere gets completely fucked ammo prices are volatile as hell
>>
>>33547202
>>33547229

Right now I usually end up at 20-23 cents per round after shipping depending on the deal by the case I can find online, sounds like I could almost double my volume by reloading...I have the dies somewhere... 5-8 lbs of old (but well kept) powder, mite be time to explore this again after I move.

>>
>>33547229
Should have clarified, it isn't worth reloading for cost savings*

If you're a high volume shooter you would probably need a Dillon to reload enough ammo to use, and when I priced that you're looking at almost 20,000 rounds before the difference between the cost of the press and components evens out with factory ammo.

If you already have the equipment that obviously changes things.
>>
>>33547392

>>
>>33547392
Bull fucking shit.
With commercial jacketed bullets you can reload for 10cpr with several different recipes. With plated bullets you're at 8-9cpr with several different recipes. Commercial cast drops you to 6-7cpr, and home-cast is 3cpr+lead costs (even buying commercial reclaimed bullet lead at $1.25 a pound is ~5.9cpr shipped). All of this is without having to spend hours hunting for deals, but is predicated on buying in bulk (several thousand bullets/primers at a go, at least a single 8lb keg if not a full 48lb shipment).

So, yeah, if saving $10 a box isn't "worth your time" when those 50 rounds take 15 minutes even on a single stage press, GG you're literally making a quarter million a year. But for most people it is, even assuming they'd be doing something else during their reloading time that makes them money (most won't, that's 4chan/TV time).

try inserting snap caps randomly into mags randomly to determine flinching severity and direction. looks like an upwards trend to me, you dont happen to blink when the firearm goes off or feel unnerved/afraid of the boom or recoil do you?

You may want to try not worrying about recoil management, and focus only tensing your trigger finger. just hold the firearm with the minimum force to keep it from leaving your hand. I've found this and focusing on my breathing sometimes helps me when i seem to be pulling one way or the other.

I've been shooting for years and do the same shit anon. Preventing it with mental discipline and trigger control works okay for me, but I still drop shots if I'm not on the ball.

double up on ear pro (sometimes it's not the recoil, it's the noise)

try alternating snap caps and live rounds in the mag and doing slow fire. The idea being to get a smooth trigger press with no anticipation regardless of whether the round is real or not. I've heard the random snap caps method before and I think alternating is better than random. When they're random sometimes people get extra surprised from the live rounds which only feeds their fear of noise, flash, and recoil, which only increases the flinch. Better to have some predictability so as to not be overwhelmed.

Are you or are you not the one claiming 20-23cpr shipped in >>33547354? Cuz that damn sure isn't $9 a box.

Buy a mid-grade turret like the Lyman T-Mag, they're nearly as fast as a Dillon 550 and about 2/3 as fast as a LnL AP or 650 and can be had for under $175. Shoot commercial cast+coated at 7cpr and get your per-box down to $3.50.

Granted I have a progressive (LnL AP), but 6 hours of reloading on one rainy Sunday sees me producing about 5k 9x19 including all brass prep. If you want opportunity cost, I'm making/saving (depending on perspective) $108.33/hr compared to 20cpr factory ammo loading at 7cpr.

Still, if you shoot over 8k rounds of any and all pistol ammo a year it's worth setting up for. Especially if you have a local club or group of people you can do group buys through to soften the shipping/hazmat fee blow.
>tfw my local club orders 5 pallets of birdshot a quarter, which drives the price down to about $28 a bag or a little over a buck a pound; they also order an entire semi trailer full of powder and primers so I'm paying around $100 for 8lb jugs of pretty much any powder (other than H322 and 8208XBR, those are still expensive for some reason) and under 2 cents per primer.

>>33549043
You really need to optimise your setup.
Quick change bushings on the dies, baffle in the thrower, mount th ethrower overhanging the bench by about 6", and put a line of akro bins along the edge.
Deprime everything at once, clean, prime and flare in batches of 100. With the primed cases in the left most bin it's easy to pick a case with the left hand, throw a charge in, grab a bullet from the next bin and preseat it while loading the case into the press.
With practice it's fairly easy to average 2-300 an hour. Big thing is to mount the thrower high enough and far enough from the bench you can easily access it and fit the whole case block under it if you want to batch fill. About 16" from the press is still easy enough to reach between the two.
>>
>>33549400
At the rate I'm going I'll probably shoot 18,000 rounds this year, I really need to get a progressive setup.

>>33549430
I only just started doing more than 50 rounds at a time, it's admittedly still a bit of a cluster fuck.

I just did 50 black powder .45 Colt rounds and now I'm doing 150-200 .38 special rounds.

Funny because my range buddy just replied to my text with the same response about jacking it to guns.

But this seriously scares me, I need my eyes to aim with!

Getting one ASAP, just grabbed another RCBS case tray and a stand for the powder thrower. Probably just going to run with that for now.

clearly not posting it, here's the last 10 rounds I had in the box from the 15 with the 10 second par time, basically this with the shot more north and outside the scoring zone

just fuck my shit up senpai

Welcome to bullseye shooting. This is common even in competitions, it only takes one fugged shot to tank your score.

had a very vertical but slim 14" group and a very circular 6" with one errant flier, POA/POI were god and I wasn't pushing left, I felt confident and warmed up, didn't need to start any mental fatigue so went right in.

Also, I WAS heeling the gun that consistently somehow, hell I think I still do, I duct taped the issue with more support hand thumb pressure pushing the frame down and right.

Bad ass, I'll be there around noon barring acts of god. Unfortunately I won't have my new glasses to cheat and make a run at 300.

The fuck? That is freaky.

Awesome stuff with the 50yd, I'll shoot a group with my USP today and post it so we can compare.

noice m8, I'm getting those 2.5k rounds in monday, I can see the bottom of all 3 of my 9mm cans right now ;___;

I might just suck it up and go to hell-mart and see what WWB value packs are going for these days to make it through the weekend.

bump limit in like 15 posts, hold on to your butts

Walmart has Federal Aluminum 115gr 9mm for $9.98 a box. I'll shoot some today and if the thread is up give you a report.
I wish I had pistol ammo stockpiledlime you lol

We're letting this one die outright this time correct? No new thread?
>>

>I'll be there around noon

Shooting for around then, but need to grab some ammo first. I'll bring D.O.T.M. targets too.

My Savage .308 finally came in too. Really nice rifle for $319. Probably won't have it set up for today's trip though, as I'm lacking bases and rings.

It's kind of the groups call - it looks like we are retaining a similar amount unique posters each thread.. So we haven't put everyone off yet kek.

I'm not going to tell anons when or how to make threads, but I'll be farming for a new PB all weekend and if I get one worthy of putting up - I'm def going to make a thread for it if one doesn't already exist.

Got a picture of the rifle? I have a .308 Savage model 10 FCP-SR that I love.

I also have a pack of B8 repair centers for blasting.

Copy that, if I get significantly higher scores I'll do that but if not I'll just save them for later.
