Currently in electrical/computer engineering at UT Austin how hard would it be to become a police officer in Texas, preferably in the Dallas area. Also, what should I do to prepare on the side? What is the police civil service exam like?
im having a really hard time finding internships/jobs and the ECE program at UT austin isnt as good as id hoped it would be/ I dont believe i will be good enough to be competitive in the real world. (i also hate the ppl here but thats a different story).
I wanna start looking into alternatives b4 its too late
APD is actually your best bet, probably one of the best run/most professional departments. They also have a longer training period, it's harder and they are most selective.
Just google whatever area you want to join, they'll straight up tell you what the exams etc. should be like.
Also lift, run and study to prepare. You get paid more for being bilingual and having college classes in a relevant degree program.
Just saying man, unless you enjoy talking to crackheads all day long and dealing with domestic disturbances involving crackhead all day long Dallas is not the type of place to aspire to
I know coming out with a 4 year degree gets you a pay raise but is that only for relevant degrees aka is my degree going to be useless?
Not necessarily the specific city i was inquiring about DFW area in general because thats where im from. I may look into APD but i hate Austin.
Cuz im a fucking retarded faggot lol. The degree itself won't mean anything without work experience and I'm a pretty mediocre student as it is. I'm just keeping my options open just in case my plans fall through
Thanks for the good information I've been googling some police departments some seem pretty cool but others seems incredibly shitty with low pay and shitty office politics and low morale. However since I'm not pursuing a criminal justice degree I don't think I will be at an advantage compared to others.
Oh shit a fellow UT Austin fag from Dallas and wants to be a LEO, you sound like me
Probably the Marshall Service, what year group are you in op (freshman, sophomore etc)
And I'm currently second semester sophomore I think I may be able to get out in 3 years because I came in with a lot of credits. My gpa is a 3.3/4 which is ok but not great but I'm pretty sure I'll pull it up by the time I'm out
Also I looked into fitness standards which I can easily pass on all of them but I'm a skinny chink. What are their requirements for raw strength and weight? I know there are female officers which I am definitely stronger than but I'm pretty light
i dont know anout texass but here they dont require have a raw strength test. only pushups/situps/1.5 mile
criminal justice, the most useless degree made. dont study it. you will learn everything at the academy/on the road.
Don't work in the City of Dallas. You'll get stuck in nigger neighborhoods of south Dallas. Or other areas with lots of niggers. That's the reason DPD is so desperate for recruits. No one wants to work those areas for obvious reasons.
Work in a northern superb. Better pay, better support, better community, more safe.
You are too smart to be a cop. They'll reject your application. It happened to a guy some years ago who was a member of Mensa. They came right out and said he was too smart. He took them to court and claimed discrimination. Court sided with the state and said high intelligence is not a protected class.
Unless you are dropping out of engineering. Then, go for it.
If you're struggling to find a job when you're at UT Austin for ECE I have news for you.
You're literally within driving distance of almost all the major chip design firms in the world. Every relevant company has an office in the Austin area because of the Samsung fab and TI. Pay attention in class, fix your GPA, stop being autistic, and apply for as many jobs as you can.
Google it. It's more real than you think.
But it's also a question if I want to do that for the rest of my life. I really dislike the environment of Austin and I don't know if I can maintain being competitive in the future. My grades aren't especially bad rn but Im really doubting whether I'd like to suck liberal dick for the rest of my life
I guess you could be a beat cop for a while then try to get an EOD or equipment maintenance position. Fix communication equipment and shit. Do that for another year or so for work experience then get a normal electronics tech job. Then finally get an ee job.
I know in los angles Some of the smaller cities all start you off around 75-80k and with a college degree foreign language skills and some recommendations the department I want to work for can start you off at 97k for a first year officer...Cops make good money
Nope, maybe while they are going through the academy
>also implying 75k is good pay in one of the most expensive suburbs in the country
Most officers I know that work in that department do not live in the same city also
>The benefits for Sworn Officers include:
Annual Salary Ranges of $80,988 - $99,984
^Santa monica PD
By the way that number you posted for Pasadena is not the baseline pay, it is literally the highest possible pay with all the extras tacked on for whatever the pigsters look for.
About 30 miles south of Dallas is alright. I know some of the cops in Waxahachie/Mansfield and they're pretty chill. Except for the Mansfield cop (was high up in the ranks. Part of me wants to say chief) who got caught snapchatting 13 year old girls. He was a douche to work with
Unless you're a black or a woman, you won't be getting hired in Dallas. Fuck being a cop anyways, just work in the private sector. I worked in houston for 3 years and got out to take a job that actually puts my degree to use. I get paid a shit load more and have so many more funs than I did as a cop. Weekends off so i can go shoot them, and in 10 years I'll have enough saved up to build a house on my property. Couldn't have done any of that if I stayed a cop. Seriously, just forget it and do something where you wont get sued or killed for trying to help people who hate you. Public service is for the birds
>Trying to learn mobile app development on the side
You're doing the wrong shit. Join a research group instead and focus on coursework. Or become a undergrad TA.
Nothing you are entertaining is remotely useful in getting into the field. By the way, cop pay is shit compared to ECE pay, so unless you enjoy saying pennies for two guns a year, don't be a cop.
coursework is basically useless so far. I think itll get better as i get into upper division courses but right now im taking a speech class for engineering and linear signals and systems.
I think most of the money nowadays in in software development but i dont wanna live in gay ass san francisco (preferably not austin but ill tolerate it if i get paid enough)
I'm thinking about joining my hometown's PD when I EAOS too.
I see the billboards everywhere around town, so why not?
