Not a bad design it weighs the benefit of loading mags quicker by dumping them to the ground with holding unto oldmags more easily, which may have rounds remaing or can be loaded with carried loose ammunition if needed, as part of the reload process. Reloading should be done behind cover or in cleared areas and the user can pocket them more easily aswell as a visual of remaining rounds from seeing a round at the top and roundcount holes.
Tl;DR Faster loading if not worried about mags vs. holding unto mags more easily
It's user preference, personally I prefer button release vs heel

Heel release is pretty great. I understand why the push button system is dominant, but improper seating of a magazine is a common malfunction cause. Heel clips literally make magazine seating/accidental releases impossible.

Probably cheaper to manufacture too.

Truth is, I'm sure the Legion stuff is fine, but I just don't have faith in Sig like I used too. The most disappointing guns I've bought in the last few years was a 226 and a 1911.

Neither slide locked back when emptied, and the 226 was having jamming issues. I tend not to quit on guns, and even allow for user/ammo/break-in possibilities, but that 226 wasn't interested in running well. The 1911 I had fixed by a local 1911 expert gunsmith (we just fitted a new slide release).

I ended up trading the 226 on a 220 Match that has been quite good.

Honestly, I just think Sig has lost it's focus. I don't hate them, but I just don't think they are as good anymore.

To be honest, the sig p220/226 design is really poorly designed. the trigger bar and decocker spring are right outside of the frame and under the grip panels. Besides that, they're really good guns.
