I have an sgl31 but in terms of ammo selection, the 5.56 ak wins. With this being said, buying an ar15 is much better if you're going to try to do this type of deal.

That being said, the only time I would ever get an ak in 5.56 is for a clone of a russian ak101 or 102.

My buddy had an SLR-106FR. It was a newer production one with a nice "throat", but it still would always shit the bed when firing certain Russian ammo (particularly HP stuff).

I also had a converted SAIGA .223 with a 20" barrel and professionally installed bullet-guide, etc that I didn't have good luck with.

Do some people have great luck with their SLR-106's and other 5.56 AK's? I'm sure. But my only experiences made me lose all patience, so I just decided to stick to my SLR-107FR and my SLR-104FR I got some time later.

I recommend sticking to 5.45 if you want a lightweight round out of an AK.

I wear a large glove. My hands aren't gargantuan by any means. I love them. Hands down my favorite grip. If you have small hands you may prefer the MOE, however. But give the US palm a shot. It really helps balance the rifle, and in my experience, made mag changes much easier by virtue of the fact that it felt much less front heavy. YMMV.

I used 20rd Bulgarian mags, 30rd Bulgarian mags, and even tried some Yugo steel mags and various others. Same results with all of them. Even with correct feed-lip geometry.
Maybe Arsenal or a smith could have fixed it, but once I lose faith in a gun I want the piece of shit gone. There's a reason Arsenal discontinued the 106 line.

SLR106 owner here, they aren't in production AFAIK so you're going to look for a used one or a new old stock one. I scored a new old stock one about a year ago.

Make sure it has the update feed ramp on the barrel, you can tell it's new by looking for a chamfer all around the chamber and also looking for a feedramp that's larger than say your pinky nail.

Bulgarian waffle mags is where it's at.

5.56 AKs aren't for everyone but I love mine.

Actually, 5.56 is still effective out of a 14" barrel.
Any shorter that that does affect fragmentation.
