I'm about to buy an Arsenal SLR106 (5.56). Is there any reason I shouldn't? I also plan on getting the Bulgarian mags for it.
If you only fuck with 5.56, sure go for it. There's nothing inherently wrong with a 5.56 ak save for the expensive mags if you're not going for something like >>28534832
I have an sgl31 but in terms of ammo selection, the 5.56 ak wins. With this being said, buying an ar15 is much better if you're going to try to do this type of deal.
That being said, the only time I would ever get an ak in 5.56 is for a clone of a russian ak101 or 102.
I got lucky on gunsamerica/gunbroker.
>I have a SLR107 and a Colt AR15 already.
Good choices. Just stay away from the UR models, they're plagued with problems from what I hear.
If you really want a 5.56 ak, I say go for it.
Because the 5.45 is a superior fighting round.
5.56 needs to be shot out of a '20 barrel to have good terminal ballistics, or you need to buy expensive ass 77gr MK262.
If youre just getting as a range toy then buy it. Hell buy anything. Buy some hi-points while you're at it.
SLR104FR master race
My buddy had an SLR-106FR. It was a newer production one with a nice "throat", but it still would always shit the bed when firing certain Russian ammo (particularly HP stuff).
I also had a converted SAIGA .223 with a 20" barrel and professionally installed bullet-guide, etc that I didn't have good luck with.
Do some people have great luck with their SLR-106's and other 5.56 AK's? I'm sure. But my only experiences made me lose all patience, so I just decided to stick to my SLR-107FR and my SLR-104FR I got some time later.
I recommend sticking to 5.45 if you want a lightweight round out of an AK.
We are indeed a rare breed around here, but there are a few mercs to be found.
Yes, The Aimpoint T-2 micro is far and above the best red dot optic on the planet. Thanks for the compliment :)
>Do some people have great luck with their SLR-106's and other 5.56 AK's? I'm sure. But my only experiences made me lose all patience,
what made you feel that way? Were you using bulgarian mags?
I wear a large glove. My hands aren't gargantuan by any means. I love them. Hands down my favorite grip. If you have small hands you may prefer the MOE, however. But give the US palm a shot. It really helps balance the rifle, and in my experience, made mag changes much easier by virtue of the fact that it felt much less front heavy. YMMV.
I used 20rd Bulgarian mags, 30rd Bulgarian mags, and even tried some Yugo steel mags and various others. Same results with all of them. Even with correct feed-lip geometry.
Maybe Arsenal or a smith could have fixed it, but once I lose faith in a gun I want the piece of shit gone. There's a reason Arsenal discontinued the 106 line.
Personally, I have a few ARs and a Tavor. So, I have a shit ton of 5.56 and AR mags. it's just convenient to buy an 5.56 AK that takes AR mags but I also feel it'll feel like an abomination.
Yeah. Youre right. I havent been running a 74 platform since the mid 80s or anything. I'm sure you know what you're talking about. Carry on.
The only thing you've been carrying since the mid 80s is all the cock you gobble.
Mine is fucking awesome. I only shoot brass cased shit out of it, because steel case ammo with bi-metal jackets will fuck up the barrel quickly, and you can't replace it easily like an AR barrel. Also, as everyone said, use only Bulgarian ((10)) mags. Promag a shit.
Yeah, when I decide to buy a new grip for my ak, I'll just buy both and return whichever one I may not like. I like the us palm's angle and it definately seems to offer more leverage on the gun, shame how they removed the buttplug on those for whatever reason.
>bi-metal jackets will fuck up the barrel quickly
>w they removed the buttplug on those
The original butt-plug fucking sucked. It was loose and floppy like a prolapsed asshole. The MOE has a superior storage mechanism, but I don't give a fuck about storing batteries and bullshit in my grip.
SLR 104. 5.45 is cheaper, and I get mags pretty easy. Good round
>5.56 needs to be shot out of a '20 barrel to have good terminal ballistics
20" to 16" is less than -100fps
16" to 14.5" is about -50fps
The only reason 20" barrels were ever a thing is the military specified it. If it was up to them then we would have 24" barrels.
Remember when Radom was supposed to open that plant in Texas so they could sell us all domestic Archers and MSBSs?
SLR106 owner here, they aren't in production AFAIK so you're going to look for a used one or a new old stock one. I scored a new old stock one about a year ago.
Make sure it has the update feed ramp on the barrel, you can tell it's new by looking for a chamfer all around the chamber and also looking for a feedramp that's larger than say your pinky nail.
Bulgarian waffle mags is where it's at.
5.56 AKs aren't for everyone but I love mine.
>5.56 needs to be shot out of a '20 barrel to have good terminal ballistics, or you need to buy expensive ass 77gr MK262.
Actually, 5.56 is still effective out of a 14" barrel.
Any shorter that that does affect fragmentation.
5.45 is fucking fantastic for SBRs though.
>a different magazine angle and cartridge
This thing loaded with xm193 penetrates steel at 100 yards infinitely better than steel core 54r, no joke. I really want to see if that holds up through a 16in barrel too someday.
I think it's a lot more interesting cartridge all around, especially when I see what it does in softer targets.
Nothing special that I've seen, shot through a few small trees I was going to cut down. I'm pretty sure the bullet just broke up.
And it's nothing special vs thinner steel at my 400 yard spot. You'd have a hard time telling whether you'd it hit with 762, 545, or 556. Just a slight dent and lead stain.
I couldn't tell you any more. I got them from royal tiger imports at the time. I can't even find them on gunbroker now. They were 70 bucks at the time, so I just have one.
>because you could get an even better quality ar for cheaper
I know AR dudes are going hog wild right now but neither of my ARs shoot steel case reliably while my 106 eats that shit all day.
>or an ak in a cheaper and better caliber for the same price
Will 5.45 maintain it's cheapness though? 5.56 I imagine will be available for a long time in the US. 5.45, I'm not so sure.
545 won't change much, except for surplus being almost twice as expensive as it used to be. I wish I could have stacked it deeper when it was going for ~11c/r.
Commercial 545 is pretty comparable with anything else steel case, and it should stay that way.
>Shillitary Arms Channel
Choose one and only fucking one, I guarantee you that fuck got a nice fat check from one of the cheap foreign bi-metal ammo producers to spew that.
