I own a Marlin 60 and I suggest you buy a different weapon. They are most certainly functional and accurate, but they are annoying to reload and clean. You will probably have more fun with a Ruger 10/22 and you will have more customization options.
If being forced to use a tube magazine with no ability to increase your capacity or quickly reload does not bother you, then the Marlin would be a fine choice. You could get a brand new one for less than $200 in a store though.

Look for a Ruger 10/22. It's the ultimate first gun. I still have mine that I got when I was 6(now 34) and I can count on one hand the number of times I've fully cleaned the thing. They're plenty accurate out of the box, there is a HUGE aftermarket for them, and they are as reliable as any .22 can be. You should be able to find one new for between $200 and $250 and used between $150 and $200.

Glad to see someone getting into guns. Have fun with it, but be safe!

Definitely get a 10/22. It's THE best starter rifle, but it's so fucking reliable on so many levels that everyone should own at least one. I bought a takedown model myself, love it. One thing to mention, though, is that the GSG 110 shot rotary mag will NOT fit on the takedown model. I learned that the hard way. Buy a Ruger BX-25x2 for it and you're golden.
