So, I love guns and all, but i'm feeling a more historic side of me comin up. So, I'm curious what is everyone's favorite historical armor. Looks wise I would say that I rather liket he look of maille under a tunic with a great helm, typical of what you would see in any movie with templars. But practically, I would much prefer the armor of the high Gothic period. Weapons wise, I like polearms such as billhooks, halberds, and spears. The Ahlspiess also seems interesting to me.

idk if you guys have ever been to the Metropolitan museum of art in New York City but it has a huge exhibit on medieval armor with tons of really cool stuff

I remember reading an article in the new york times a few years ago about the guy who started the exhibit in the late 1800's by donating his own vast collection of armor.

Heres a picture of him in Japan in the 1890's, behold the proto-weeb.

I actually have reasons why thats not true for Greeks.

First the spear had a buttcap which was weighted and made it easy to hold overhand so you could hold it farther back and still aim well and thrust with power. Many people on youtube do not show an accurate weighted spear. While overhand you arm is protected except the hand, while underhand requires you to move your hips a little for some thrusts and expose a spot on your body. Also the aspis is too large to hold underhand correctly.

The hoplite aspis was a large shield covering everything from the neck to the greaves, however the feet could be open (yet some did have armor for it). From the side however if you can see a gap to spear the neck. If you are in a row and there is another row directly in front you would have trouble with the man directly in front yet to the right or left of him you could spear his neck. This could be done overhand well but underhand not so much as the spear angles downward near the feet and if you spear down and miss you are in deep shit

The Greeks have depicted both for different reasons. For one on one an underhand might work for when the formation broke, yet during formation it works best as overhand.

The feet and eyes were the only areas exposed (the legs if they did not have greaves). Yet aiming downward is difficult in a Corinthian helmet. So it would be difficult to aim properly and not look down which would leave you able to be attacked when you don't expect it. Other helmets don't have this problem yet they had much more open faces and could be speared easier.

His video on Greek vases showed it was the other way around. They drew formations with underarm, and 1v1 with overarm.

If you're so close to a guy that you need to half the length of your spear, then why not just pull out your sword?

Why fight with a stick that's 8 feet long if you're just gonna get up in the face of the person you're fighting anyway?

I don't know about how he said that hoplites could not hold the shield overhand for a large amount of time. They could rest it on the shield and the ranks could move back and such.

>>22948184
It is show on pottery in such grand ways to show the hoplites in their full glory to sell the piece. It makes no sense to open your shield like that and "lock" it with the opponent. Some pottery pieces show both actually it just depends on what you look at.

>>22948200
They had a long spear to use in formation to create a wall of bristling spears and move as a unit. Also not every hoplite had a sword. They didn't always go right up in the opponents face.

Yeah, Skall does have some nice points about some things though. I like to consider him as a "lite" version of research on medieval arms and armor. He does practice HEMA, so he does know what he's talking about some of the time.

His Fantasy Weapons Scrutinized series has one on Skyrim weapons and why they're not shaped correctly. Given that, yea, they're games and whatnot and we should be using suspension of disbelief, some people can get spergy about it. Skall's not that spergy, but I like what he does to correct some of the misconceptions about weapons out there.

the thing about chainmail is that its very good at deflecting glancing blows but not heavy hits or piercing stabs

normally this would be fine in a fight because you're going to be moving around a lot and deflecting attacks, its only a problem if you get knocked off your balance or some fucker on a horse runs you through with his lance which would completely punch through your armor.

Actually, Japanese armor is the platey-est of Eastern Armor.

Continental East Asians preferred Chainmail and Lamellar due to horse archery and the very mobile nature of warfare in East Asia, with only bits of plate armor covering the chest/arms/legs

Any recommended movies for Ancient Western Warfare that is not too hollywood-y? That would flare up my autism too much. It is all movies, so some form of slip up is understandable.

I can recommends a few Eastern ones.

War of the Arrows (Korean vs Manchu): Nice archery skirmishes.

Heaven And Earth AKA Ten To Chi (Japanese Sengoki Jidai): Nice formation battles.

Seven Samurai (Shame on you if you didn't watch this classic)

Musa the Warrior (Korean vs Mongols): Nice mix of melee and archery skirmishes.

I can only remember a few that is not too kungfu-ey flying all over the place Eastern movies. Those are it.

And Myceneans suck at archery. Greece pretty much relied on Javelins and Slings for missile combat due to the melee-oriented nature of Warfare in the mountainous regions of Greece

Nigger it was imported steel from europe

>>22949256
Coarse linen would be shipped in to Athens which would be cheaper and not that difficult to get as the port Piraeus was close to Athens and since Athens economy was mainly from trading as the port was a major hub in the ancient time its not that difficult to see them getting linen. Also leather would be harder to come by as they did not have as many animals which supplied leather as they had mostly goats and sheep. Cattle was still present just less common but both could have been used.

>>22949295
They did rely mainly on those weapons yet the ancients did have archers they were just not main warriors of the day.
>>
>>22949256
Linothorax could have just been made up of mainly hardened leather, but with a linen outer layer as to protect the wearer from getting burned on the leather while out campaigning in the hot Mediterranean climate.

A composite linothorax armor seems to be something that wouldn't have been feasible.
