Trying to break down 忘れずに a bit, れ is potential, ず is negation but I cant quite grasp the necessity of the に? Why is it there? Wouldnt the sentence be the same without it?

How does one combine a list of options marked with か, with a verb with a paticle that aren't replaced by か, for example に or と?

I've come with a new development regarding the Anki Japanese Example Sentences add-on. 90 percent of my cards weren't working because I had a space after the vocabulary word in the Expression field. All I did was delete that space and now it works perfectly. Just thought I'd inform those who may be having similar problems.

I'm happy to say I'm a little passed 20% done with core 6k with 1400 or so cards. I'm about half way through Tae Kim's grammar guide and starting a CoC-suggested manga in tangent. It's crazy how anki has been a part of my daily routine for two months now. To the point that I forgot that I was essentially putting the guide on hiatus until I met the suggested prereq's of 1000-2000 words and some basic grammar. So I'm basically just taking the first step towards learning still. Feels good but daunting.

What's the difference in usage for these? Is 年月日 the most formal and/or something to do with official day, month, and year dates only as opposed to "the 10th"?

Is 日数 not actually for "date" despite what Jisho.org says? Their example is confusing because at first I thought it was "a number of days" like "several days" but it looks like the sentence is more not a lot of DAYS meaning.

Usually yes. 1st Japanese definition in the dictionary I use:

他人の不幸や苦痛などに同情して心を痛めること。また、そのさま。

It is essentially feeling pity/heartache toward something, or something being in a state that causes you to feel that way. So in your example they're saying, "'X is in a pitiable state,' I thought."

Yeah I mainly use goo.ne.jp. Jisho is just for finding kanji by parts or if I REALLY can't parse the Japanese definition (which is fortunately getting much rarer for me). webloio.jp is great too, sometimes I can find 方言 stuff there that I can't on goo.ne.jp.

Should I shoot for N1 this December (and most likely fail) or just go ahead and pass the N2?
Failed the N2 last year by a solid 10 points in every category so it's probably going to be a cakewalk this year for me.

I heard the difficulty jump between N2 and N1 is the highest between any two tests though.

If you want to write (it's optional as far as comprehension and media consumption go), you absolutely must adhere to correct stroke order.
DJT Kana doesn't show stroke order, so use something like http://kakijun.jp/main/kanamain.html and a notebook to learn it.
For kanji, most online dictionaries have stroke order diagrams (example http://jisho.org/search/%E9%AC%B1%20%23kanji ), and books like RTK and KKLC also teach you proper stroke order if you want to use these (more info in the guide).

The thing is that you can learn Japanese to the point where you are able to listen, talk, read and type without knowing how to write down a single character with a pen. Hell, you could pass JLPT N1 without writing a single character down.

That said, there's no shame on working on improving your handwriting. There are penmanship guides for English, and lots of resources on Japanese handwriting too. My English handwriting was complete shit before I took the time to relearn it.

Alright nigga, here's the deal. There's nothing inherently wrong with learning to write kanji, but we recommend against it most of the time because people learn it when they don't know anything about the language, and if they give up half way, that means they know that much less japanese. And it takes a long time, and it's slower the less japanese you know. You can go full on the handwriting if you have a clear use for it, but keep in mind that it's still time consuming, so you should find ways to keep it efficient. Peace out.

If taking notes on the lesson helps you remember it, do it. I wouldn't try to learn how to write every kanji that shows up in Tae Kim, though I personally learn how to physically write every kanji I learn through Anki. If you do actually continue writing kanji it eventually gets much easier; there are a finite number of components that most kanji are made out of, and once you get used to all the components and their stroke order you can usually look at a new kanji and know exactly how to write it without checking.
