「忘れ物」 vs. 「だって、忙しかったもの」 (tangible thing vs. presenting a situation as a tangible thing)

「隠し事」 vs. 「読むことが楽しい」 (intangible thing vs. nominalizer)

「今住んでいる所」 vs. 「死ぬところだった」 (physical place vs. state/point)

Of course, these are just examples and there are many other ways in which they can be used. But regarding your question, when they're used in the abstract sense they're written in kana, and when they're used in the concrete sense it can go either way but kanji seems more common.

Doing Anki every day. Going through core 2k/6k at typically 5 new cards a day but I'll sometimes turn it to zero when I've got lots in my other decks. Almost done with my radicals deck. I do new cards from my mining deck at about 10 cards a day and once I run out of new cards I will try and add more.

Almost every day I'll click around Jisho. It isn't really study but I suppose it can't hurt.

When time permits I will read manga, mainly to mine for new words, I'm not sure manga really helps with grammar but I don't really have enough vocab to comfortably read real books yet.

DJT please help me out.
When you check words on jisho, for example 生きる it usually shows "other forms" which means the same word written with a different kanji right? like 活きる　in this case.

Now the question is, are all forms equally viable in everyday use, or are they only used in specific situations?

Another example would be 守る　護る　why would you use the latter one? cause it looks more complex or is it the old way to write the word and thus is used to carry over some different feel when reading something?

Please help me to solve this mystery.

It really depends and you should take everything you see on jisho with a grain of salt. For example it lists 逝く as "another form" of 行く. Use J-J dictionaries for this kind of thing.

They carry different nuances, which are generally easily understandable given you've studied kanji aka learned how to write. No problem if you haven't though, you can just read and pick up the differences through experience.

If you want to know the difference, it's preferable to get it explained from a native perspective, thus using google.jp. Let's pick your example :

守る is protecting something you cherish.
護る is protecting something from an attack.

You don't need to do preventive research though, just check as you read in case you're confused about something.

Also, other than the example I provided, sometimes the author may use different kanji to convey different meanings, without it being necessarily something widely popular or accepted. It's especially common in fantasy settings.

As for jisho, well, it's a good tool for beginners, but with time you'll stop using it. The reason is, to fully embrace Japanese you'll want to think in Japanese, thus using J-J dictionaries / sources as anon said or as I showed you is much more accurate and better.

I'll try and do my Anki reviews while I'm at work.
Then review the forgotten cards a few times or read some articles on NHK News Easy whenever I have a spare few minutes throughout the day.
Try and get through 5-10 new cards after dinner and then read some manga or play some easy videogames.

Grammar is not a problem anymore, when I don't know something I'll just look it up as I read.

My biggest problem is that I have to read more to get better, but my vocabulary is still lacking and I have to mine tons of words everytime I read even simple shit.

Try and find a particularly long series or author that you like, and stick to it for a bit before you move on. That way you can get used to their particular vocab and writing style, allowing you to consume more material and reinforce it better (because you're more likely to see that word or turn of phrase again from the person or work which first introduced it).

One technique is to only mine words if you have seen them 3+ times. This way you aren't learning rare words and there are many words that you will have already memorized after seeing them 3 times, so you don't need to bother mining them.

Yeah, at 20 cards a day it would take you a little over 3 months, but keep in mind that you can try reading earlier if you want (though I'd recommend knowing at least the first 1000 words in Core). Also, there are reading guides for the first two volumes of Yotsubato which cover every word used and explain the grammar in some sentences, so you can read those even at an early stage as long as you understand basic grammar. You can find them in the guide resource list.

Uninstall everything, download from rutracker. Mount the game, install using setup exe one folder deep in the iso, say no to softdenchi runtime. Install 1.10 patch. Copy the NoActi exe to the install directory and run it. Game should boot.

You could try doing some other stuff to avoid having to redownload but above worked for me.

Learning vocab through Anki 2k/6k Optimized Japanese Vocabulary deck, and the answer pronounces it out loud and shows the definition in english. I'm having a hard time remembering the pronunciation, but it's really easy remembering the definition. Any tips?

I'm having different problems also on archlinux, since I updated anki today from anki-2.0.41-1 to anki-2.1.0a10-1 my fcitx-mozc input stopped working.

I have no idea why and fcitx-diagnose tells me it is properly setup for qt4 and qt5.

It's annoying because I can't type in Japanese in Anki now.

I will try the precompiled executeable from the ankiweb and see if that one works.

Confused me when I was first reading Yotsuba too.

OK, so I've been watching Gaki no Tsukai and when they do sushi episodes the pieces are gigantic. They eat them in one bite, which I understand to be proper etiquette, but it requires practically choking and having some of the piece outside the mouth, using fingers to shove it in, hardly being able to chew it etc.

Is this like a running joke in the show or is japanese sushi traditionally more than a mouthful or what? I've only had sushi in murrika but it's always been reasonable bite sized pieces- what's the deal?

I've learned a few Hiragana characters. I am a little confused about how to use them. For example, if i saw a sentance written in Hiragana, would I look at each character and say those sounds to make english words, or would it make Romanji words. And if it made Romanji, wouldn't I then have to learn all of the definitions for those words?

They don't use english in japanese any more than we use german in english. クール is a japanese word borrowed from english, just like zeitgeist is an english word borrowed from german.
Japanese words of this sort are normally written in katakana, not hiragana, but bear in mind that they will often have a particular pronounciation and meaning in japanese that they didn't have in the original language, so don't always assume that you know a katakana word just because it's from a language that you know like english. The pronounciation in particular will almost always be different, because the japanese language doesn't know very many sounds and so approximations have to be made.
