I think it's safe to say a good 90+% have at least tried downloading and playing around with one of the games. The question is just how many enjoyed it and stuck to it enough to get any good.

After seeing touhou memes and reading some touhou dojins for like the last two years, I finally gave in and downloaded all the games. Am now playing PCB but it will probably take another year before I can actually complete it on normal.
Right now I'm at 50% and that after weeks of trying. Is that normal, or should I just give up and be a filthy secondary again?

Remember that practice mode is a huge help: even if you lose all lives, use all your continues, so you can reach the last levels and unlock them in practice mode. You can also try to play on Hard (as long as you actually try and don't just bombspam) for a bit and then get back to Normal: it helped a lot of people.

Ended up liking the fan games more so. When it comes to shoot em' ups, I like the late 80's stuff more than danmaku.

I'd say 60% have tried at least one of the games. There's a barrier to entry in that you have to either pirate or import them, then patch them with English translations. That's a lot of effort for a git gud shmup that will then murder you until you like it. I'm a gamefag myself, but know a couple of lore and music fans only. I don't blame them. It's a twitchy game like osu! requiring good memory and hand eye coordination. All for lacklaster official art and ending slides you need 1cc to get.

I try to play then on occasion, but I'm absolutely terrible at danmaku.

I've played all the games at least once, I spent a long time trying to beat EOSD and PCB, I gave up and am currently attempting SA on easy. I have yet to past stage 5. Mostly because I'm an impatient retard who rushes through shit and makes stupid mistakes he could avoid if he was trying harder. That applies to my life in general.

I am an art-oriented guy, so I kneel before ZUN.
Touhou fanarts are low on my vision.

I did play the games many times, as I admire ZUN, but I'm not a gamer type of guy, so it's been weeks since I played one (last time was one month ago. I can't believe I actually managed to reach Yukari on PCB).

It doesn't help that the main games aren't that "great" to begin with, so ttey don't last so much for the casual player. Unless you are a pro, you won't be enjoying them so much (losing is not fun).
They are only fun for pushing you and having an extreme experience. So I play the game from time to time (recently I've been distracted, so... I've been away the past months)


So I consume official art. I do not bother checking the fan works, not that I care so much

Most of the games aren't THAT hard, and they're still fun even if you can't 1cc them. Like maybe it's different for someone like you who doesn't play games much in general but for like someone who is relatively familiar with playing video games getting a 1cc shouldn't take more than a few weeks of playing occasionally if you start with an easier game. I 1cced EOSD in about two or three weeks and I'm not a power gamer or anything nor did I play constantly I just did runs every now and then in between other things.

Losing is plenty fun, or rather just because you lose doesn't mean the fun from your attempt goes away. Maybe I'm just not as prone to frustration as some people though.
