I've been working on the last chapter of my webcomic this week and this is one of the pages I'm doing up right now.

The whole thing is done in chicken scratch so a lot of people are probably already turned off from looking at this rough style.

One of the things I enjoyed when drawing this is drawing normal western school uniforms. All I ever see drawn are the cute Japanese style uniforms. Even though they're cuter, the normal uniforms I've seen in my own life caters to my fetish better.

So, I ordered a new tablet on a whim which is expected to arrive in a few days, hopefully I'll get to contribute again this time.

Any game devs around? How should I approach making a (touhou) roguelike? I have no previous game dev experience. I know a bit of software programming.

Should I just go for GameMaker, or go for something ridic like Unity? I could to learn C# on the go.

I don't want to do everything from scratch because I also want to use sounds, graphics etc. in previously unseen ways (for roguelikes).

Like what? Every variation on a roguelike has been done. Are you actually going to draw every sprite you need for graphics when you could make an image of letters and use that?

I've drawn a bunch of sprite grafix for Dwarf Fortress and Space Station 13 before, so that wouldn't be a problem even though it would be a time sink. If you go with unity I'd be able to assist a little bit. It's grown into a very capable engine for both 2d and 3d stuff, so I highly recommend it.
It's also pretty simple to pick up and most importantly well documented.

As for room generation Unity works really well for additive / subtractive object based approaches. Essentially you create some key locations on a blank map and then move around some objects to spawn or erase tiles and place items and enemies by chance or simple logic. Its not as complicated an approach as proper algorythms, but it can yield varied and fun results with only a little tweaking here and there.

Another nice thing to do is to spawn from a palette of possible tiles. I.e. tiles are flagged 'grass' and then randomly decide if they will be of type 'dark grass' 'grass with flowers' 'long grass' or the like.

Anyway I'm not sure Im coming across well, so the tl;dr is: Just layer lots of simple transformations of spawn and delete instead of generating everything from one huge algorithm and you have a lot of flexibility and variety from many very small, easy to debug steps.

Here's another one. It took me a long time to make the right loli on the bed to look somewhat acceptable. It was difficult connecting the right loli into a position after drawing the left loli first.

The left one that you said looked mentally ill is meant to be semi-autistic. I noticed I forgot to draw her nose, maybe that's why she looks extra derpy as well.
That hand does look way to small as well. Somethimes I spent so much time drawing parts that when I get the size wrong I just leave it.

There's a portion of weebs who want English original works drawn manga style and that's it, they have no regard for any of the nuances that make manga what they are. Basically, these people enjoy the drawing style of manga but they want something that is more localized in respect to where they are born. These guys are alright with stuff like your Brianna Stevenson example.

But they don't compare to the number of weebs who want everything to be as close to the original as possible.

And honorifics are completely optional and up to personal preference.

Again, it just depends on who you're making it for.

I personally think you shouldn't call it manga/doujinshi if you aren't going to keep all the nuances like drawing right-to-left and having some real Japanese names and "other" names which are based off Japanese. For example, those "other" names I'm referring to are names like Rena, which you can argue is just Japan's rendition of Lena.

I think one of the reasons why we don't have much OC, is because a lot of people in this bord are narrow minded and dislike anything that is not made by japs or is nit made in the typical anime style. As a result, some people feel intimidated to upload their work because they are probably going to be hardly critisiced.

I am like that. I don't necessarily need people telling me what to draw (or compose, or write), but when I create I will always need to put a lot of effort into coming with a background or a theme.

No art of mine comes "from the soul" like people seem to do oftentimes.
I don't feel emotions, I assemble them in the piece.
I don't have a message - that particular character in that particular setting does, I just portray it.
I kinda "shapeshift" into the character and create things from his perspective, guessing how he would feel in the situation.

All in all, I love to create, but I have no drive to create anything in particular. This drives me insane. I envy those autistic Sonic faggots who are 40 years old and still draw Knuckles fucking Rouge every day, with all the excitement in the world.

It's not actually CUTE, (unless we compare it to your previous guitar/metal work, then sure), but I find it really relaxing/pleasant.

The demon king crosses his arms in a more relaxed measure, where each arm supports the other (which is pretty much the default way of crossing arms) but I don't usually see people doing it her way, since it requires an active grip to support.

I only really see people hold themselves like that as a form of reassurance, such as when they feel insecure or mindful of how they come off.

I don't think your colors are bad per se - they are very symbolic, yes, but that's common in more manga-ish art.
Unless there is some setting (like being in the dark, underwater, on a volcano etc.), you can get away with most colors in a white background.

If you're looking for shading techniques, then it's an entirely different story, which involves understanding shape and its volumes.

But the Photoshop setup is simple: make a layer above the one you want to shade and make it a Clipping Mask. Change the blending option to Multiply and make an opaque layer of shading..
Same goes for highlights, but with Screen mode instead of Multiply.

Since it was a quick sketch according to you I'll disregard things like the laptop keys as they're not really that important.

I think specifically on the laptop (since it is the centre of the image) you should not have all these wobbles and curves. Laptops have straight lines that are clearly defined. You ave curved lines which have varying opacity. Same goes for the screen of the laptop.

Tablet would also benefit from an extra few straight lines.

If those were done better I think the general quality of the piece would be vastly improved, especially since things like the wrapping and bottle actually look good with that ill defined kinda style.

Perhaps if you had made 4 clean squares (laptop base, laptop monitor, laptop screen, tablet) then draw squiggles over that it would solve the problem?

I'm just kinda speculating though.
