So I've been studying Mandarin for 3-4 years now and have backpacked around china a bit to practice the language. I want to go to china for a semester or two abroad, but am conscious about not spending that much money. Therefore I'm looking to apply directly to a chinese university and studying for one semester there, ideally doing some Chinese courses or even courses in English and soaking up some Chinese while I'm there. I've been looking at 中山大学 as a friend that lives in Guangzhou says it's a great place, and it has a good distributed computing facility which I have experience and people that can write recommendations regarding. It seems very prestigious though, much more prestigious than my midwestern state college.

Could anyone help me out with this?:
1. What classes or programs should I look into taking if I was planning on studying there for one semester, maybe two?
2. What institutions should I look into?
3. Should I be aware of any information I should need during this process?

Again, I'm looking to find a balance between a decent education for a semester or two and cost. If anyone has experience with this I would appreciate their stories.
