So when から doesn't mean "from" or "after", it means "because"?
>>
If 来ている, as described by TK, means that someone has "come and now exists at a place" what do you say when someone is "coming"? I imagine you'd probably use 今すぐ or something but what if you don't want to falsely imply any more than just the fact that they're in transit because you're not sure how soon they may arrive?
>>
>>77002189
The て-form can also indicate continuing action
>>
>>77002232
So 「もう、家に帰っている」, in addition to "He is already at home ", can also mean "He is already going home" then?
>>
>>77002272
From what i get from TK is that when the ている is there that means that he is already at home, and not going home.

Im just about finished with the core 6k deck but I just noticed this core 10k deck.
The 10k deck has all the 6k but more.

How do I start using that one while keeping my reviews from my deck from before?

How do i do that? (´・ω・`)

you click "Browse" in the desktop app, choose the cards you want to move in the 10k deck, and then click "Move Cards"
if you don't bother selecting only the non-6k cards, but instead select all of the cards, it may or may not add duplicates (I haven't tested this)

I think you might be talking about the "change deck" button after selecting the cards.
Anyways, it looks like if you select all the cards including the duplicates it will transfer them too.
There was an option to "tag duplicates" from a different menu but it doesn't remove them.

I found a separate deck that just has the 6k - 10k so its whatever.

The core is just made in a way to give you easier words first.
That doesn't mean you will see them first when reading but sometimes it's easier to construct a sentence when you know the basics first.

I would suggest learning by whatever you feel comfortable.
That being said, the reason some classes in school were drilled into you is because that's how you learn.

But like exercising there is more things that can help you than just doing pushups all day. Not saying you have to do core but like something like football, it would be better to train your muscles with something like pushups ahead of time.
>>
Hey guys.
What is デレ期?
>>
>>77006789
The spaced repetition of the core deck is designed specifically to give you the best time/retention ratio.
I'm sure you CAN learn just from reading stuff and looking up words you don't know, but it would probably take more time for the same amount of retention.

How do hard Rs work in Japan?
For example, in Spanish, "carro" means car, and "caro" means expensive. There's a clear distinction in pronunciation.

Are there words that use double R?

For example, and just an example
かっらて "karrate" would it be pronounced with the regular little pause from っ or a hard R?

What about a name like "Barrera"? Would it be バッレラ or just turning every hard R into soft ones like バレラ?

>come and now exists at a place
来た(完了相) / やって来た
もちろんcomeが日本語の「行く」になる場合は「行った」です。
「来ている(居る)」には進行・継続だけではなく完了の意味もあるのは下記参照。
>what if you don't want to falsely imply any more than just the fact that they're in transit because you're not sure how soon they may arrive?
I have already gone home.
(I am already at home)
これは、『もう、家に帰って夕食を食べています』と用例と比較してください。
この場合、接続詞「て」は状態・継続ではなく、確定条件の「て」であり、完了の助動詞「た」の連用形とする説もあります(一般には、助動詞「た」に連用形はない)。

In this case, the connective particle "て" expresses a cause.
We Japanese don't consider て foam to be the conjugation.
"て" is one independent word not the conjugational suffix of the verb.

I've looked everywhere on the internet and I can't find the stem + ようだ structure, or what it's supposed to mean. I know the ようだ grammar, I just have no idea why stem is being used here. What does Vstem + ようだ mean in general, and in this context?

Why use stem over 張り切っているようだ here?

That one dumb hiccup earlier aside (braindead moment), I'm really admiring my progress with how easy I find Nier Automata, even as someone who's a little rusty. That was the first time that I'd had a reason to open DoJG in a long time. I remember back when not only were sentences that I could read without issues not the norm, but it was cause for celebration.

Suggestion to any intermediate learners (say, 6k+ words): Drop the texthooker. It'll always be calling to you as something that enables you to turn off your brain and not try, which will ironically make the activity more difficult in the mid-term, as you won't be able to lazily pick up on the word without any assistance. Don't wait until you feel like you have no use for the texthooker. You're just delaying your final push.

Use it if you're a beginner, though. I couldn't imagine trying to read without a texthooker when you have to look something up every two seconds.

I think that it's impossible to completely ignore tools that'll feed you words with minimal effort on your part, and then to avoid using them in a way that hinders you. Even if you consciously deny the crutch, your mind still wants it. Again, ironically, the availability of a crutch will weigh on you and make the task more stressful. After a certain point in your learning, getting rid of it increases immersion and focus.

Back to my personal blog, I don't think that I'm going to return to anki. Anki is the best tool for beginners who are looking to get over the wall as soon as possible, but the sheer tedium of it has always destroyed my focus for hours that could be spent reading, and mining is just one more thing to worry about. I'm good enough at reading now that absorbing the rest through exposure doesn't feel like overload. I have zero interest in having 20k mature vocabulary cards.
>>
>>77047641
Come on mate, you really aren't in any position to make suggestions to intermediate learners. That was not a simple braindead moment, it was a fundamental error born of both lack of exposure and lack of basic comprehension.

You are still a beginner, one who doesn't know how to use a fucking search engine.
>>
>>77050945

That was me being rusty, and the not looking it up properly was the braindead. I wasn't exaggerating when I say that it's been a long time since I've had reason to open DoJG, and it's not due to just being "I don't understand that, but whatever" (thus the question). The "can read most sentences without looking anything up" wasn't a lie, either.

I'm not going to blow up my accomplishments by calling myself fluent, but I'm also not going to downplay them by pretending like I'm still spending an hour getting through a ten minute conversation. Sometimes, a ten minute conversation doesn't take me much longer than ten minutes (my reading is slow due to the fact that I'm having trouble kicking mental vocalization, and I don't vocalize anywhere near as fast as a native). I'm neither a beginner nor a master. I'm intermediate.

Question on interpretation of a sentence:

"そうするべくつくった仔" obviously means something along the lines of "Offspring created for the purpose of doing so", but can the つくった in it be also be used in a way that the sentence would mean "Offspring raised for the purpose of doing so"?

I ask because つくる is usually used to mean "create", but "raise" and "train" are listed as alternate definitions. But I'm not sure if a native speaker would use it in context of the latter.

>お礼いってくる

Why is くる used over いく here? I read the DOJG entry. So first off she wants to go somewhere and say thanks, which would prompt me to use ていく. But the DOJG entry says くる can be used if you can shift the viewpoint to the person you're talking about, which I assume is done here but I don't really understand. Doesn't it make sense to talk from your own viewpoint and say "I'll go thank her" or something like that?

Route 1 - Learn Radicals (couple weeks), then individual Kanji (couple months), then Vocab words (years)
Route 2 - Learn Radicals, skip to vocab.
Route 3 - Start from vocab words, learn radicals and individual kanji on demand.

The downside of route 1 is the time invested into not learning anything readily useful. The downside of route 3 is learning it without much structure.
Consider whether you're able to autismo your way through it or if you want to learn some actual language ASAP. In the end, the method that keeps you going is the best one.

Thanks. I'm at a point between beginner and intermediate after 3 semesters of study, but I want to take my language learning much more seriously now. I probably have a vocabulary of 1-2k words and recognize 200-300 kanji.

I figure I want to follow a plan where I first learn the radicals, and then combine learning the kanji via a mnemonic method along with vocab I come across. The problem is I have no idea which of these kanji learning "methods" to follow, there is a lot of stuff out there and I'm the kind of learner where I do well when I have a solid plan and stick to it. Thanks for your help
>>
>>77069043

Adding on to that >>77069476 , there's a Kinokuniya (japanese bookstore chain) near my house, and I was looking through their books on Kanji today. The Kodansha Kanji Learner's Course seemed like a really well thought out resource. I've read that the method of learning the kanji according the the MEXT graded levels might be unintuitive because those are designed based around meanings, not around the simplicity of the kanji itself. Therefore a radical based option might be better. At the end of the day I guess it doesn't really matter what order as long as you get there in the end.

There's nothing to think about.

The usual way to ask someone to do something is to put the verb in the て form and maybe add a word meaning please like ください.

ないで is the negative て form that is used in this construction (rather than なくて)

You don't need to break it down further than that.

https://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/jn/226111/meaning/m0u/%E6%A7%98/

6 動詞の連用形の下に付いて複合語をつくる。

ありさま、ようすなどの意を表す。「喜び様」「可愛がり様」

…する方法、…するやり方などの意を表す。「ほかのし様もある」「しかり様が悪い」
>>
>>77040558
Verb stems often attach directly to nouns to form compound words. If you do a google search for はりきり you'll see a bunch of compound words made up like はりきり体育、はりきり朝ごはん

So I'm pretty sure はりきりよう is just a compound word formed with よう. It even appears in the Japanese dictionary weblio, and means pretty much what you'd expect: showing a lot of enthusiasm for something.

Nevermind, I think this describes the correct meaning: ありさま、ようすなどの意を表す。「喜び様」「可愛がり様」

"Represents the meaning/feelings concerning the appearance/state of affairs" or some shit like that. Please correct me if I'm wrong, which I probably am.

It seems you didn't see my reply to your original question, but はりきりよう is even in the dictionary.

stem + よう is just a productive way to form word compounds, which is exactly what the first line in that dictionary entry the other guy posted says.

I wonder if you are so autistic, SO AUTISTIC, you can't even notice how flat and obvious your crap is. I need your help with a sentence
for context, it's from Shinsekai Yori when they play this game where they move figures with their telekinesis power
the team of the protagonist hides their goal with a trick and the opposing team is confused. One of the protagonists teammates makes a scornful comment towards the opposing team, then the protagonist thinks

>味方のわたしが見てもどうかと思うくらいだから、敵から見れば、さぞかし憎々しいことだろう。

Am I understanding it correctly that the protagonist basically says "because It makes even me, as a ~ally/teammate~, think 'how (do they do it)', it surely must be a malicious thing, when you look at it from the enemies' perspective,"
or am I going in the wrong direction and it's actually about the scornful comment from her teammate?
