There are lots of those moments. I remember years ago reading a Chinese guy commenting on the usage of make in English. Make love sounded strange to him.
He went on to comment how we imported some English usage to Chinese. 做愛和造愛 有sex

Of course the import is always limited and Chinese always has their own language. The usage of 跟 is always surprising.

>Imports of opium into China stood at 200 chests annually in 1729,[1] when the first anti-opium edict was promulgated.[2] [3] By the time Chinese authorities reissued the prohibition in starker terms in 1799,[4] the figure had leaped; 4,500 chests were imported in the year 1800.[1] The decade of the 1830s witnessed a rapid rise in opium trade,[5] and by 1838, just before the First Opium War, it had climbed to 40,000 chests.[5] The rise continued on after the Treaty of Nanking (1842) that concluded the war. By 1858 annual imports had risen to 70,000 chests (4,480 long tons (4,550 t)), approximately equivalent to global production of opium for the decade surrounding the year 2000.[6]

>By the late 19th century Chinese domestic opium production challenged and then surpassed imports. The 20th century opened with effective campaigns to suppress domestic farming, and in 1907 the British government signed a treaty to eliminate imports. The fall of the Qing dynasty in 1911, however, led to a resurgence in domestic production. By the 1930s the Nationalist Government, provincial governments, the revolutionary bases of the Communist Party of China, and the British colonial government of Hong Kong all depended on opium taxes as major sources of revenue, as did the Japanese occupation governments during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945). After 1949 the respective governments of the People's Republic of China on the mainland and of the Republic of China on Taiwan successfully suppressed the widespread growth and use of opium.[7][8]

I'm reading this and I notice he has a slight lisp. Why do a lot of Chinese-Americans speak with a slight lisp or sound really similar (nerdy)? I'm not indicating that it's bad or anything, but it really does sound unique. I don't hear a lot of Chinese-Americans that sound like Todd from the midwest. I know a lot of Mexican-Americans have a slight intonation, especially from Texas or Arizona, but I chalk it up to it not being their first language and it bleeding over to language learning. If any Chinese-Americans could shed light, I would appreciate it.

How do all the chinese youtube bloggers stay in China? They're not doing it legally?

The guy that goes around food markets eating street food was originally doing a degree at a university, but he dropped out. He would have been on a student visa so making money on youtube would have been illegal. Now he's dropped out he no longer has a valid student visa.

The African and Cmilk don't work, they are full time youtubers, meaning they don't have work permits. What ever permits they have they shouldn't be working on youtube either that's illegal.

And they basically broadcast all the evidence of them breaking the law and China does nothing.

I'm bored of my life and want to go to china to be a dancing monkey, but I dropped out of my degree, what should I do?

1. Pay £10,000 and complete my degree part time online in 4 years, then move to China. (safest option as I have a good job but this means I'll be 32 before I get to China.)
2. Move to China and pay £8,000 for a degree and work on a tourist visa part time. It's possible but you need 关系 to have it approved by PSB. (Highest risk option)
3. Move to China on a 2 year tourist visa, finish my degree online, while working an online job, when visa expires do the trip to hong kong trip to get another 2 years.

Definitely do the tourist visa option 3, anon.
You can still make good money as an English teacher in China. Also, the demand for British in certain tech industries is huge because China needs people who can speak english to foreigners in Advertisements/business issues.

China is really weird like that. There is too much labor in most industries, and barely any in other niche industries.

Try emailing JaYoe about it or go browse Shanghailist.

Good luck anon! China is great (for a few years) if you prepare properly.

China isn't the UK.

Also, you can take online English teaching courses to get an associate's degree in 1 year. University of Pheonix does that for $3,000. That'll be enough to become an ALT.

You'll also learn something.

>>

Dude, just like a green card in the USA, if you convince a Chinese company of your value, they will get you into China and help you out.

Safest route would be to get an associate degree (1-2 years) or an undergraduate. But the "illegal" way is 99.8% as safe. Only idiots who try registering their visas get deported.

You should email JaYoe or browse Shangahaist for more specific answers.

I personally worked "illegally" and was fine. Just be prepared to avoid police.

I'll have a look at this but I'm highly weary of lying to the Chinese government. I've heard stories of expats being sent to prison for a few months before being deported. There is a way to obtain Z visas without a degree. To teach English or anything else. For a start the law says "SHOULD have a degree". Not "MUST have a degree".

Secondly to get a legal work visa with no degree just requires your employer to appeal to the SAEFA on why they should give you a work visa. In practice this means some money exchanging hands and some guanxi.

With this you can now work in anything but public universities.

If a company wants you, they will make things happen.

At some point, I'd like to live in Taiwan and study mandarin. I will probably go to the mainland first for a bit, but mainly because I've found more teachers there I want to work with (all set learning seems promising, for example). That said, I'm a highly motivated learner who has gotten quite far just with a small army of italki instructors and language partners. I presume in Taiwan I'd probably just live there and try and find teachers I want to work with 1:1... there are a couple colleges that looks ok, but I think colleges are generally overpriced and move slowly, since most learners are pretty lazy.

Any suggestions on how to find good teachers? I'm open to recs, though I won't be there until next year. I'm comfortable managing teachers and getting the most from teachers who have outdated teaching styles, but if I can find teachers who really know their shit, that'd be a plus.

Where should I live? Mainly I'd want to improve my mandarin, try and make friends, etc. I mean, some fun neighborhood in Taipei seems like the most obvious, but I'm wondering if there might be fun smaller cities or something that might give me a lot of mandarin exposure without the cost of Taipei. I can afford Taipei for a bit... but I can obviously afford a cheaper place longer :p I guess I just don't know Taiwan super well and would appreciate any opinions on the matter!

Actually I'm also wondering...might there be homestays? Is that a thing that's possible? (I'm 30 and well mannered). I feel it'd be a great way to get a lot of immersion, and become more familiar with the culture...

??? Open to an advice you have given my stated goal.

ATM I'm bordering c1ish, though I will need to get up to speed on the traditional characters...

This one is more random, but something I'd love to do is learn how to cook Taiwanese food. I love that shit. But I want like, real lessons. Not just a 3h class for tourists. Any thoughts?

http://www.rigzone.com/news/oil_gas/a/148254/petrochina_aims_to_meet_a_third_of_chinas_shale_gas_target_by_2020

>“The country has laid out a shale gas development blueprint to pull out 30 bcm [per year] by 2020 and 80-100 bcm by 2030, and the southwest municipality of Chongqing has been identified as one of the top five production zones,” Reuters reported.

>Sinopec, which did not answer an emailed inquiry from NewsBase, announced recently that its neighbouring Fuling block had produced 3 bcm in the seven months of the year up to July.

€China’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said in September that the country had produced 5 bcm of shale gas overall in that time, topping output for the whole of 2015.

>Sinopec has forecast that its Fuling block will be yielding 10 bcm per year by the end of 2017.

>Last month, PetroChina said production at its Changning-Weiyuan block, adjoining Chongqing, had produced 1.8 bcm to date this year, exceeding a target of 1.5 bcm set for 2016.

>Shale gas production is on the up 50% this year, according to NBS figures after the disappointing results of 2015, when Chinese producers fell short of a government output target of 6.5 bcm by at least 1.5 bcm.

>Most of China’s shale gas output comes from the Sichuan Basin, which includes the Chongqing area.

Now both commies and kmt just asked themselves this question: should i fucking let them just be independent even though they could be great and contribute to china potentially. And the answer is no for kmt and no for commies too, except outer mongols which they didn't really want them because they're still living in khan's dream but world doesn't fear mongols on horses now
Well, at least viet does exist now and ccp is satisfied with creating natural beauty on some islands… I'd say it's still peaceful.

http://nationalinterest.org/feature/china-the-next-shale-gas-superpower-11432
>Shale gas sparked an energy revolution in the United States, helping end a reliance on imports and making the nation an energy superpower. Yet while China eyes its own shale revolution, the world’s largest energy consumer is seeing its production targets rapidly evaporate as it confronts enormous technological and market challenges.

>Shale’s potential to deliver much-needed energy for China is obvious. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s 2013 estimate, China has an estimated 31.6 trillion cubic meters (tcm) of technically recoverable shale gas resources, almost as much as the United States and Canada combined.

China has already invested more than a billion dollars in shale-gas exploration, completing more than eighty reservoir appraisal wells, including more than twenty horizontal wells as of 2013. Yet of the 117 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas produced by China last year, only 0.2 bcm was from shale.

>While domestic gas consumption has increased rapidly, production has lagged behind, hit by a lack of investment and pipeline constraints. China became a net gas importer in 2007 and since 2009, domestic gas production has expanded at an annual compound rate of 9.3 percent, well below that of demand, which has grown by 19.1 percent over the same period.

>Under its 12th Five-Year Plan, China set a target of doubling natural gas in primary energy consumption to 8.3 percent by 2015, producing 6.5 bcm annually and as much as 60 to 100 bcm by 2020.

>BEIJING — In a remote corner of Sichuan with lush, terraced hillsides, oil exploration teams have been scaling cliffs to lay seismic charges and struggling to move heavy equipment along winding mountain roads.

>That is where China hopes to find vast stores of natural gas trapped in shale rock. The U.S. Energy Information Administration has estimated that China’s technically recoverable shale gas resources could be 50 percent bigger than those in the United States, where shale has transformed the energy sector.

>That has sparked hopes that unlocking those resources could help meet China’s relentlessly growing energy demand and ease its reliance on heavily polluting coal-fired power plants.

>But progress on China’s shale frontier has been slow. About 60 shale exploration wells have been drilled over the past two years, according to the consulting firm IHS CERA, about as many as are drilled in North Dakota every 10 days. And there has been no Chinese shale production.

China reported a 50.4-percent annual increase in its shale gas output for March, to 1.15 billion cu m, with overall gas output rising to 13.6 billion cu m last month, up 8.2 percent from the average for January and February.

>The National Bureau of Statistics also said that over the first quarter of the year shale gas output increased by 17.4 percent to 2.67 billion cu m. The increase came on the back of expanded production from the Changning-Weiyuan shale gas pilot zone, in the southwestern Sichuan province, state news agency Xinhua reported.

The reason I post these links is because so many "analysts" doubted America's shale industry in 2006-2010, just like many analysts doubt China's shale industry.

In 2013 China produced no shale. Now it produces 12bcm (fifth most in the world).

I expect China to be the second biggest producer of natural gas and shale gas by 2040.

This thread is the biggest pile of garbage I have read in a while. Where did all you china experts get your sources from? Wikipedia? Even then you guys can't be this badly informed. China is not going to collapse any time soon, even if the economy suffers a major downturn it is so big now that it will recover and grow again.

Once an economy gets on the growth track it is very hard to throw it off. Germany and Japan both had there economies decimated in the WW2 but were back up in no time.

Foreign direct investment constitute a major component but not essential component of Chinese growth. China is not going to collapse without. By far the biggest driver of growth in China is driven by STATE investment followed by consumption as a second. This investment is essentially financed by repression of household savings. Essentially Chinese banks produce negative interest rates and capital controls are maintained so that citizens cannot easily move money out of the control. This is why the banks in China are so big and successful, this accumulated household savings is what allows China to invest in things like Clean energy, infrastructure and other big projects in such a major way.

All you guys looking for schadenfreude in China's collapse are going to wait a long time.
>>
>>76957529
Twice sucks
>>
>>76958164
Same poster here. To continue, China will become the largest economy in the world by PPP this year and nominal terms by 2019. Even if you knock a point or two off China's current growth rate and up the U.S. growth rate you merely move this event by a few years, to say 2023. However China won't dominate the world the U.S. did. China become a indispensable part of the world and its economy will be the strongest. In time, it may become the technological leader as well but that will take further reforms and is not guaranteed.

The bottom line is: China is not going to collapse, it will almost certainly become the largest economy, but will not dominate or even exercise the degree of influence the U.S. enjoys today. The most likely scenario is that China will be the pre-eminent power in East Asia while the U.S. continues to enjoy great cultural and technological advantages in the world at large.

I don't have time to pick up every argument of a internet troll but I will say a few things.

China's middle class is huge. Essentially every who has hukou (that is permanent residency rights) in the major coastal metropolitan areas is in the middle class. This easily adds up to some 300 million people. You can also toss in a few major boom areas in the interior such as Chongqing and certain parts of Inner Mongolia. Ensuring the political loyalty and welfare of this middle class is the Communist Party's top priority because they know that their surivival depends on these people not undergoing political agitation.
>>
>>76958265
People in the west have extremely presumptuous understanding of China. In China the middle class is not the vanguard of political democratization. This goes against the process of democratization in countries like Taiwan, South Korea and other places. In China the middle class is the class that stands to lose the most in a democratic process. Why? There are 300 million middle class and about 1 billion people who are broadly speaking, peasants. In a situation of universal suffrage what will happen is that wealth will be transfered from this newly emergent middle class to the 1 billion peasants. This can take the form of direct subsidies but most importantly it will be through massive hukou reform, which will allow the peasants to migrate and take permanent residency in the cities, probably leading to slums like in India. So paradoxically in China it is actually the middle class that best ensures the political hegemony of the CCP.

Chines currency and manufacturing wages is entire other topic I don't care to touch on. Suffice to say the reason China is the top manufacturing country in the world has less to do with its wages and more to do with its superb infrastructure and concentration of suppliers. There are countries with far lower wages then China yet the jobs don't go there. And wage increases are happening extremely rapidly in China right now. In the past few years, especially in the south where manufacturing is concentrated wages have been increasing by something like 15% a year.

The key reason why China is so successful at manufacturing has to do with the fact its labor force is not only cheap but literate and skilled and its infrastructure in the manufacturing areas is first world.
>>
>>76958304
You can compare this to India. India has lower wages then China but companies don't go there why? 1. Literacy and basic education is lacking in India, 2. Gender inequality means you essentially lose half your labor force because females are less educated and forced to work as house makers. 3. Indian infrastructure is atrocious, you can't build a factory because there are no roads to the factory, and once you do have roads the electricity supply at the factory is not stable. Lights flicker, production lines go dead. I could go on. 4. India is much more corrupt then China. China is already very corrupt but in China corruption greases the wheels. In India they just take your money and then don't do what you want. Its like giving bribes to no purpose.

I will add a few more lines and call it quits.

On the question of successful international Chines companies. Right now in North America there is not much presence. But in Europe, Africa, South America Chinese multinationals are getting very big. Huawei a couple years ago basically took over the entire telecom infrastructure market in Africa. But in the coming years you will start seeing more Chinese brand name presence in North America too. A few ones to watch (some of which are already here) are

1. Lenovo - the make computer but also tablets and smartphones now
2. Huawei - smartphones
3. Haier - white goods like fridges and shit
4. ZTE - same as Huawei

and I expect after that Chinese car companies will eventually get there as well. But not for atleast another 5-10 years. The safety record of Chinese cars is not good enough for north american standards.

Most Sapir-Worf "the language you speak affects how you think" hypotheses have been thoroughly disproved and thrown out the window.

Oh, and Chinese does have a future tense. It's just usually contextual (and if it's not contextual, you can use 会). Syntax and pragmatics are both pretty important in the coding of meaning, and his argument totally ignores the latter.

This has been your daily linguistic PSA.

There are still people alive who lived through the atrocities committed by the Japanese. The people who lived through the fight with the British are dead. Also, the younger generation doesn't hate Japan anymore. It's mostly a meme at this point.

Brits: harass & get some easy money
Japan: rape & kill
So why hate brits when there's a bigger enemy out there

Ok. Go to Dave's ESL or use your connections in China then if you have 120 hours in TEFL.

Company will provide living accommodations along with free visa.

This is a take it or leave it deal.

Japs chimped out in China.

Even the Brits eventually realized that hooking a nation on drugs was morally fucked up. In 1906 they agreed to stop all opium exports to China.

Japs still are happy they killed 30 million Chinese civilians.

?????

That doesn't happen at the G-20. China and the USA currently have a 100 day plan that is breaking down trade barriers between them.

The Chinese already agreed to lower tariffs on a number of our goods, buy more LNG, buy our beef, and allow in our Credit Rating agencies.
We lowered barriers on chicken, certain consumer electronics, and our barrier on certain Chinese-made vehicles.

Slowly, but surely, LGBT people are gaining acceptance in China. Pretty cool to see.
Once the 1940's generation dies in the 2020's, you'll probably see it legalized completely.

Speaking of race, I wish we can just call ourself hanren instead of Chinese. The CCP is forcing the multicultural meme when it should just be Han supremacy. China was invented by the horseshitters to legitimize their rule over us. I wish we have a Han Adolf Hitler...

>multicultural
Much of the problem in Western China and elsewhere can be attibuted to the fact that China claims to be multicultural (or multinational if you prefer) while actually forcing down the classic 20th century, one country, one culture, monolingual ethnic supremacist mold. Think the English making Wales assimilate into great English culture. The difference is that Modern China doesn't have Britain's home political system to offer some respite and they are very suspicious even of even a whiff of this system.

Han comes from qin, and qin is basically 蛮子 (comparatively) back then, because they're absolutely not related to the damn river
Qin shi huang and liu bang made it possible for those bitches who whine about muh 炎黄子孙 to stfu and be han (or be under qin but equal generally).
ccp is trying to be that, with the human right restrictions. I'd say they're brave to do so but is unrealistic. Qin shi huang is a god level emperor that no one in china's history can compare and liu bang is like the anime like cheat character that is weak compared to opponent, but wins once and becomes some emperor and stuff. He also got some rich grill that want to be with him from the beginning. So in case everyone stops bitching about muh Han supremacy and be chinese, ccp will be doing more than qin shi huang or the main character of china under severe restrictions.
But hey, talking of han supremacy, sun yat sen is supportive of that, but kmt also didn't give up mongols (both), burning monks and asian roaches. Imagine if kmt actually ruled all china and established we're han, and you all are barbarians so we supreme government…
