Apparently it's not compatible with this game, because the main application is started from the game's launcher, so if I use the game's exe in the command line the game doesn't start and if I use the launcher's exe agth cannot capture the game's text.

After 1 month break from adding new cards after having learned all Joyo kanji, I finally started my Name Deck today, July 1st.

Took some thinking to establish the necessary Fields, but I am quite pleased with how it works now. Here's how it looks, appreciate!

(Pics are taken from MAL, way easier to make everything the same size this way).

Right off the bat I can see 黑澤 is the old form os 黒沢, two variant jinmeiyou in one stroke! Nice.

South Asians keep staring at you because they've never seen a 白人 before or something club

Though honestly it seems restricted to those taking N3, the N1 seem less stary, though more Eastern than South in this group

Let's suppose you have 100 reviews every day, and by the time you come back there are 500 stacked up.

You can come back home and do everything in one sit, but that will make reviews huge every 3 days.
The other option is doing it by bulks: 200 every day, or 150 every day, until you close the gap.

There is not much you can do apart from that, the algorithm is made so it tries to account for you being late too - if even after a week past the due date for review you can remember a kanji, that means you actually have the retention necessary to push it forward, after all.

Not entirely sure. I read somewhere at one point that it only counts time spent on a card prior to hitting the show answer button, as well as only up to 60 seconds per card as a max limit. These aren't things I can find in the user manual, though, so who knows.

Good thanks. Listening was a bitch but I'm hoping I got at least 30/60. If I managed that much ny vocab/grammar and reading should put me over the passing line. If there is one thing that I'd say to anyone taking JLPT, it's check out the Shin Kanzen Master books, or if nothing else the practice tests in the back of the books. The actual N1 is just about exactly as hard as the SKM books so there were no surprises.

Just fyi all of SKM for N1 and N2 is in the CoR. But anyway:

For JLPT:
N1 (and to a lesser extent N2) 文法: Very helpful. Teaches you a bunch of shit it would take much longer to pick up with passive acquisition alone. Guaranteed to get you more points on the grammar section.
N1 聴解: Quite useful, the methods they teach are totally identical to the actual test. Made the listening section less stressful.
N1 読解: I didn't go through this one since I was too lazy but this is probably worthwhile, if nothing else as a repository of academic articles that you will see similar sorts of on the exam.
N1 漢字, 語彙: Unnecessary if you are already decent at kanji and vocab, don't bother.

For learning alone I would definitely recommend the N1 文法, maybe N2 文法 as well, but none of the others. SKM grammar is an excellent resource for learning more in-depth about grammar you already know as well as learning abouy new points before seeing them in the wild, and additionally in the N1 book there is the best explanation of は vs. が I've read. Would recommend for intermediates even with no plans to take the JLPT. The other (non-grammar) books are basivally just gimmicks to teach you JLPT tricks though.

I thought the listening was surprisingly hard. I took it in December too and even though I'm much better now, it felt like the listening part had increased in difficulty. But both that time and when I took N2, listening was my highest score despite that it felt like the hardest part, so I think I will manage it. The best part of the test was reading a novel on the way there, continue reading on the way back, and then watching Japanese dvds until time to sleep. It shows how little energy the test consumed and how used I have become to the language.

Yeah, your main point is right. You can't normally use たい alone for a third party for the same reason you can't use と思う for a third party. It's not possible to know what another person is presently feeling. Adding と思ってる fixes this, because if the person's thoughts began in the past, they've had an opportunity to convey them to you. For the same reason it's acceptable to use たい in the past tense even with a third party.

Yes, because English is very flexible. But that's mainly due grammar points, if you think about vocabulary alone, compound words in Japanese are way more compact, being almost always two syllables (and a glottal stop or a weak つ/ん ending).

English walks towards that trend thanks to the use of schwas everywhere, having a really quick way to say even long words, but it's still written in a very spaced manner, with lots of hints of its origin.

Imagina if Japanese had とうばん written as とうんびゃっくに. That gives you a lot more to work with and remember a word, instead of reducing it to a monosyllable pair.

Sponge, Bob (kinda like learning Tarou, really), square, pants, pearl, squid, tentacles, star, cheeks, crusty, crab, plankton, bikini, bottom, mermaid... those are the ones I remember from the top of my head.

Lots of these are simple, but very thematic to the sea environment. It's not a given the word for sponge or star will be the same in the literal sense and in the sea creature in all languages, so there's a niche value to it. No different than learning monster names from a RPG.

Okay, got all of the hiragana down, read through the first chapter of Genki 1, downloaded Anki and the core 2k/6k. I have no idea what the fuck is going on. Why are there multiple ways to say numbers? I can understand adding ji to signify hours, but why does 2 go from being ni to fu?

Aside from that, the biggest thing I think Anki needs is a better way of dealing with cards that you can't learn because they're ordered badly. Like a word that you simply cannot learn yet because it's not "ready" in your personal natural order for learning the language.

Cards like this turn into leeches, and there needs to be a way to make those take up less time and basically be put on the back burner until you're ready to learn them, without suspending them. I had several ideas for this, but I don't know which is right. Here are the ideas I can remember right now:

- Being exposed to a card increases a hidden internal minimum interval to that card. If you've seen a card, say, on 20 different days, it will never have an interval shorter than, say, 7 days. Obviously, this would need to stop growing at a relatively low interval like 7 days.

- Automatically burying lapsed cards that you get wrong too many times in a row. So if you review 建設 with a 10 day interval, and get it wrong, then just can't fucking remember it no matter how many times you see it for that day, it just puts it off until tomorrow. After maybe five consecutive failures.

- When the "review ahead" state (the thing controlled by the 10 minute "review ahead" setting, not custom deck stuff) is ready, not prioritizing cards on the zeroth step over cards in other steps. Basically, if you have only cards on relearning steps in the queue, and their step timers have not been reached yet, and you see 建設 and 大雪 in a row and fail them, anki will repeatedly show you those cards immediately one after another until you mark them as at least "good" to get them off the zeroth step. This is dumb.

Pause and understand if you're still struggling with grammar and vocab.

Once you can understand most stuff easily given subtitles, start doing a mix and introducing stuff without subtitles. Watch some plot oriented stuff while trying to understand everything, and watch some variety shows just letting it play, listen to some podcasts, etc.

You have to put in the effort to try to understand things. Truly passive exposure doesn't help. It has to get into your head, it has to be "input". It has to be comprehensible, which means that you have to understand what people *mean*, or the possibilities of what different words mean. If you get close enough, your brain will automatically fill in the gaps. This is different for everyone. Someone skilled won't need to pause, but you personally will.

I really like this idea. I can't tell you how many times I had cards that I repeated >20 times in a single day. Not a good use of my time.

I updated it. In my tests, it's anywhere from 14 to 16 times faster. It also seems to produce identical results. Let me know if it's enough or you still find that it has a noticeable delay when analyzing your collection history. I'm not sure I can optimize it further, though. I don't really know SQL, i just cobbled together a group by query.

I also actually verified that the numbers it gives are correct (I didn't check when I uploaded it... oops): to my surprise, they match the True Retention addon perfectly, so it seems that I'm not fucking up in any major way.

Note that the average given is not the average retention: it's the average retention per day. So if you review 10 cards yesterday and 90 tomorrow, and you have 0% retention yesterday and 100% today, the average will be 50%, not 90%. The actual True Retention addon should give you that 90% though.

By the way I should really thank you. I have a lot of difficulty finishing projects which according to my shrink is the main reason i'm depressed. It felt really good!

reading is only the hardest part if you're a dumb normalfag who could only learn japanese by living in Japan and has nightmares about kanji.

If you learn by reading, of course listening will be harder. Especially cause getting stuck far away from the speakers and such can make it a lot harder.

N1 is a bit harder since the questions get less literal but it's still not hard to PASS just there will be some questions that aren't as easy.

I was the anon complaining about it taking 5 minutes.
I have an i7, plenty of RAM and a pretty decent GPU. Maybe it depends on specific architectures, I don't know much about this turbo nerd stuff.

But the new version took me only 5 seconds to load the All-Time stats, so the problem is definitely fixed by a rate of at least 60x, in my case.

And the chart now adapts to the lowest retention recorded, noice.

This is the only thing that should matter about your setup, in this case I'd say it's probably because my collection is way smaller than yours. I might have another trick to get a bit of speedup but I need to test it.

the problem is that I'm not sure I can fix it properly while still using the graphing code provided by anki. What you'd really want is to have the days where you don't have reviews be completely blank, with no connection to the previous or next days. The fix that I could do with the code already used by anki is to interpolate in the days that you have no reviews, so if your retention looks like 60, no data, 40, the graph will look like 60, 50, 40. The problem with that is that the 50 point in the graph has no real meaning.

I'm going to try to patch the graphing code for anki though. Not sure if it's reasonable but I'll try.

I was going to suggest something similar to this interpolation system: if no data is found, repeat the last scanned day's average.
Maybe it's a better solution because it will be flat and noticeable from a distance, whereas the interpolated interval might give the false impression of change.

The other solution is somewhat more complicated, let me try to explain. Pic related.

First, the simple mode:

- Fetch first recorded review date, calculate how long ago that was (i.e. 400 days);
- Label points A and B as 1 and 400;
- Fill the rest of the axis with subdivisions of that number.

That way, even if some days don't exactly match the datapoints because of skips, one can still orient himself through the big picture of his history.

Problem: if someone studies for one month, then stops for a year, then studies another month, these 2 months will be stretched WAY out of proportion, so the plugin would be useless for people who undergo hiatuses.

BUT, now that this simpler version is explained, we can evolve it to the complex one:

- Starting from point A (I'm assuming a backwards scan, but the direction is not relevant), scan days until you reach a Skipped day. In this case, it's C;
- Give C the appropriate label (i.e. 30);
- Label everything between A and C with subdivisions of 30;
- Now run from C up to the next skipped day (D);
- Give it the appropriate label, let's say 300 (big leap as mentioned in the previous problem);
- Interpolate axis' labels from C to D, from 30 to 300.

This works, but also fucks up horizontal proportion. and must be treated to avoid overlapping labels when skipped days are too close to each other - some label redistribution would probably be needed.

I'm no coder, I have no idea about its feasibility, but thought I'd share some lines of thought that might help coming up with actual solutions. 頑張ってね! Don't forget to do your reps.

It's the の that connects nouns. Similar to ては, when you put の after て form, it acts like a noun. The subject for はじめる is omitted, but it would unfold to something like: 私は初めてのガャル.

Probably the wrong thread for this. When my family moved to America from Japan (several generations ago), they changed their family name to a common American one.

I don't know the old family name, and I have no contact with any of that side of the family. I don't know any of their names either. I take it there is no way to find it out, right ?

Using a feel loose stories my father told me about heirloom disputes in the 1940s, I managed to trace my family back to the 1200s in Portugal. The question is: if you find out information about your family, would you still somehow be able to reclaim that surname under some circumstance (i.e. moving to Japan)?
